Hi all,
Hope you can help. I got myself the biggest capacity frigate I could get, equiped it with two miner I's and headed out looking for a system with decent ore to mine. I spent 30 mins or so without success and so just mined some dense veldspar. Then I had to warp through 4 systems to get somewhere that was buying and I made all of 20k with the sale.
So in about an hour I made 20k. Enough to make me never want to mine again. I don't get how anyone makes any decent money at it?

Lot of miners use a can and an industrial ship to carry the ore
so they do a long time mining, put the ore in the can, came after with the industrial, take the ore
They're 2 can you can use, In sec less than 0.8 you can use anchored can, or you can use jettison can
Anchored: need the skill anchoring, sec 0.8-, limited cargo
Jettison: Open to everyone beware of thief, limited lifespan, big cargo
After is all about your standing when you refine, your refining skills and more verify you use a 50% station when you refine not a 30%

Well, you DO have to start small and build up from there - there is no easy way to make your first millions, its a bit of a grind.
But try the following.
1) Look at the map for nearby systems which are less busy, maybe a 0.7 with only a few people in. The belts will hopefully be that little bit fatter.
2) Try to mine Omber or Kernite (only available in 0.7 and below), failing that Scordite in 0.8 or above.
3) Jetcan mine. Read the various noob mining guides on how to do this.
4) Use instant bookmarks to and from the station/belt/jetcan. Again read the guides on how to set these up.
5) Train mining to Level IV as soon as you can, and fit Miner II's.
It will be a few days before you can afford to move up to a mining cruiser, or mining destroyer (suprisingly effective) but then you can start to earn more like 3m ISK+ an hour if you jetcan mine. It goes up from there, really.
Also, try asking more experienced players if you can tag along to mining operations (just ask in your noob corp). People like to help new players. Its how I made my first million on day 1, thanks to the generosity of more experienced players.

Also be sure your not selling to someone buying for hardly anything. Another thing see if you can mine with anyone makes mining alot less boring.
Mining in those early frigs is a painful task hopefully with the release of the new patch they will get some bonuses that help that slightly.
Your work you way up the ladder soon enough and it will become more profitable.

1. Try being an ore-thief. Live on somebody's hard work. Just fly an industrial next to him/her and say thanks before and after taking some share of the ore. Dont take all though because it isnt polite.
2. Try being an extortionist. Fly to low secs, 0.1 to 0.4 space and learn some PvP setup in a Rifter. Do a yaaaaarrrrr on a mining barge, make them laugh, bring them to armour or hull and ask for 4M for the ship. Dont overcharge and you will get some ISKs.

I do stealing ore but only from people which are known to be macro miners or are mining to sell the money for real life cash. I got 1 mio ISK in a 2 hour run that way.

Even though your refining skills stink early on, it can be better to mine ore and then refine it down to minerals. You can carry a lot more minerals than ore, so you can afford to go more jumps to get the best deal. Having said that, I find mining to be incredibly boring and haven't done it in weeks. There is no need to mine in EVE. It can be lucrative but there are plenty of ways to make money, so don't limit yourself to something that is nothing more than work to you. Don't forget you're playing a game.
*EDIT* Upgrade to a cruiser as soon as you can. More room for mining lasers and often a bigger cargohold as well.

Meh macro miners r the scum of eve, steal from them as much as you want, I myself bump them away from there can or move the ore to a new can :)

When I am mining, I don't use secure container, too much hassle, can't anchor 5000M from each other and lack of space.
Butter Dog gives good advice but to add, train a Racial Industrial as well to fly a hauler to haul your ores back to station. So mine till jetcan is full then go back station and jump into hauler and warp back to your can.
Try to get to Cruiser asap (Scythe since you are Minmatar). They have better survivalbility in lower sec example 0.5. Equip a missile launcher in your free launcher slot, 1 medium drone(since there is only enough space for one) and armor repairer is a must to tank those rat since it might take some time for your launcher and drone to kill a bigger rat. Turret of course will be Miner II and with Scythe's mining bonus, you will be mining more than your cargohold can hold per cycle so fit 1 or 2 cargohold expender on your low slot.
When I had low refining skill previously, what I do is find a system using market to find where they buy ores at good price and go there mining. So I don't have to move too much since like Micklaine mentioned, ores take up more space than minerals. Ores sometimes pay more if your refining skill is low.
