Edited by: Lizaa on 09/12/2005 20:08:39 As some of you know I have been gradually upgrading my comp week after week, since about may. I now have my EvE machine working and sadly another 2 (and almost a 3rd) computers(minus hdd's and dvd drives) in spare parts.
I started out with a Compaq Pasario, with a 2.6 GHz Celeron processor...then a 3.2GHz Westwood....then prolly my favorite the 3.4 Prescott.(New Pin Config in New Board 775)and voila intel pentium 4 CPU 3.20GHz (2 CPUs).
Hdd's went kinda like this, 20Gb ide stock, when that one burned out i bought 250gig ide.(Motherboard change 1) then 2x 250gig SATA..... and finally the last 250gig ide.
MotherBoard : Stock(WTF it didnt even have an AGP port for a graphics card) ... then came the P4P800 Delux.. which supported the westwood and the prescott nicely. Finaly ending up with ASUS p5wd2 (intel 955x chipset)
Ram was interesting. i got 512mb stock then filled the last ram slot on the stock board, with another 512mb.. but needless to say, once the new board came in i quickly went from 1gb mem to 4gb mem dd2. and finally im at dual channel ddr2.
The case was different i kept the stock case for a good time unil the new asus board came in. then bought the super alien case..
Video was pretty simple. Intergrated Graphics on stock. went to the ati all in wonder 9800 pro until the current x1800xl pcie.
and this is what I have atm and i will not change a thing about it...
Machine name: EvE Processor: Intel« Pentium« 4 CPU 3.20GHz (2 CPUs) Memory: 4096MB Dual Channel DDR2 RAM BIOS: BIOS Date: 11/19/05 20:15:36 Card name: All-in-Wonder« X1800 XL Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc. Chip type: Radeon« X1800 XL Series Graphics processor unit (GPU) Display Memory: 256MB GDDR3 memory
all in all 7 Months and an arse load of canadian dollars, later i got the machine i want and shouldnt have to upgrade for a while now.
bottom line peak 124 fps in game(non combat) and 76-84fps combat(non fraps).

My god that is overkill...
BTW what do you mean by two CPUs? There are no multiproc P4s, IIRC.
And 4GB of RAM is a bit silly... plus an X1800?!!
My god you could easily buy 2 computers that would play EVE at the same FPS for that price - Proud member of the [23].

I think you got the terms wrong. Dual-core cpu is 1 cpu package with 2 identical cores inside. Dual-cpu is normally used to talk about a machine with 1 motherboard using 2 identical cpu packages on it. Dual-cpu, 1 machine, 2 cpus. Dual-core, 1 machine, 1 cpu, 2 cores.

Actually i am right as its a single unit with dual cores. besides that is how windows and dxdiag look at the processor.

You are not totally, it is just a convention that everyone has been using until Intel came out with this dual-core thingy. It is like Earth's "northern" magnetic pole is at the Antartica and not the Artic. Therefore, the convention is there but mistake has been made and everyone agrees that North is the Artic. ----------------

Oh thats just a paste of DXDiag? A bit confusing, as it certainly isn't a two-CPU system.

well the board and the programs are telling me its dual core my monitoring prog says dual core with 2 seprate polwer settings. so.. its not the conventional "dual core with seprate cpu's." ima still happpy. Lizaa Director of Grief TacticsÖ

Yup.
Runs damn fast
And I'm guessing you could run 5 EVE clients at once and it would still be fast... - Proud member of the [23].

I dunno, from experience and feeling (probably wrong here), the performance scale is something like
1 cpu < 1 dual-core < 1 motherboard with dual-cpus
I think dual-core outperforms about 20% to 50% than its single core equivalent. I havent been following much about this though because I do not need to replace my machine yet. Anybody can summarise for me pls? Thanks. ----------------

Not at all.
Dual core, I've heard, can actually outperform dual chip due to them being on the same CPU and being able to communicate at a faster speed. - Proud member of the [23].

Is there any benchmark or test? I think there isnt any dual-cpu dual-core yet right? If so, I guess it would be hard to measure. But still interesting. If I remembered correctly, that this dual-core thingy came about because Intel wanted to churn out more IPS and at the same time spread out their heat problems. Guess their marketing unit still owns the computing world. ----------------

No, it came about because AMD came out with it, and Intel realized that if they didn't have one, they'd be screwed. So they slapped together one as fast as they could and released it. - Proud member of the [23].

Hmmmm, interesting DS. I think I missed this one out. So,
1. Are all AMD64 dual-cores?
2. Any benchmark on single and dual-core of the equivalent class processor?
Thanks. ----------------

ok same res but how many fps? thats the biggest devourer of hdd space for fraps.
