A busy weekend, which left me wondering...
Do people really find success in EvE is driven by skill, or is it more just by the incompetence of others? Perhaps a bit of both...

If by "success" you mean avoiding kidney damage after guzzling energy drinks by the bucketful to go on CTA's for days at a time, then I'd say the skill therein is having enough sense to avoid such nonsense in the first place.

Depends on where you are.
You can tell that the lowsec campers, highsec aggro fu experts, highsec station gamers, and noob harvesters rely solely on lack of knowledge on the side of their targets. That's why something like a safety button or anything that forewarns players is frowned upon by that group.
They rely on someone doing something dumb.
Elsewhere more experienced players are found, and things change. |

"Skill" is just the ability not to derp, so... same thing? |

It actually takes a rather impressive amount of skill not to derp every now and then, and a much more impressive amount of skill to keep others from derping. There are lots of great alliances out there that derp all the time. The trick is to derp less than your enemy. Or in the case of some, to fill in your derpage with extra bodies and ISK so you can keep going long enough to make a non-derp at the end of your string of derps. Fit a warfare link to your tech 1 battlecruiser. Train Wing Commander. Get in the Squad Commander or Wing Commander position. Your fleets will be superior to everyone else's. |
