Edited by: Corvus Dove on 10/12/2005 13:33:59 So I'm flying through low sec last night and enter a system with the usual garbled macro names in local. 3 lasidfna types and one player character, who left the system almost immediately. Shortly after I came in, I started sweeping my sensors about the planets.
Surely, a macrominer, even an AFK one, wouldn't do so in Low-Sec? Even someone with multiple accounts mining together is a bit more rare in that region than one would think....curiosity got the better of me.
I risk it and come into the belt at 15km. There they are, a Mammoth and two Apocs.
I was hoping to come in range to scramble the two battleships and pop the hauler, but I came in too far from the hauler.
Tried to communicate, nothing. So I locked one...
...and it shot at me.
It had a single small beam weapon on it...nothing to get excited about, but still. It shot at me when I locked it.
Deciding that I could now be unsure if this was a macro or not, I blew the first apoc out of the sky. The apoc and hauler not yet under my guns woke up, and the remaining apoc shoved the about-to-explode apoc out of the way trying to get out of the belt. I tried to catch the second apoc, but my scram didn't cycle fast enough....grr....
Loot included Quantum Coprocessors, miner IIs, cargo expanders, and 4 mil named shield boosters.
So either this was a gent who has multiple accounts and no sense at all, or a macroer with even less sense. If the second is true, then it tried to macro PvP. Granted, it was probably designed to take out NPCs that acquired lock, but the thought that someone even tried...
..On the plus side, it's like the new can flagging system minus the can. All you have to do is lock the hapless macroer, and they shoot at you. So Macrohunters, when you're in systems where belt rats spawn, LOCK THOSE MACROMINERS. In 0.5 and up, you'll get a treat ;).

It's the shield tanking equipment on an apoc that screams afk to me.
We podkilled a war target once who was obviously afk mining in 0.5ish space with a passive shield tank.

I have also seen a macro group in Nausschie that I think is programmed to warp away from the belt if too many players come into the belt (by overview count). Ironically, the barges all warp with each other off to a planet and are easily followed. They could have a minder that keeps watch for such things, but the barges are so obviously macroed, it's not funny (they follow each other from the warp in point in perfect single file and then bump the hell out of each other upon reaching the targetted roid). I petitioned, but nothing was done so there they are, night after night. If anyone wants to suicide 3 Covetors, convo me in game. :)

I have spent some time observing macro's and came up with some theories on how they are evolving in EVE.
1) They know how to get a characer into a cruiser fast - not that this is hard, then they drop them in a belt and they mine while they skill up.
2) Retreiver is the next order of the day. Getting into a retreiver seems to be fairly straight shot from the cruiser
3) Covetor - this is the holy grail for Empire Macro's... Both worthy of destruction and a podkill. From a macro killer point of view - these are the primary targets - and if they are mining Ice - the harvesters pay for the attack in spades.
4) Apoc's are the next level of macroing. Kenite is becoming scarce in high sec space - so it's off to .4 or less. Here they will need the heavy protection of an armor tanked apoc.
But here lies the problem - Macro's have concentrated on Mining skills - not defense and attack skills. They can't take a reasonably organized attack from a gank squad, where Concord is no longer part of the equation. A flight of Kessies can have a good long go at one.. scrambling and tearing the belly out of one for as long as it takes..
This will change in the near future, as they max out the mining skills and go for drones, armor and shield skills. So as they evolve, So shall Reservoir Dogs. IT'S YOUR GAME - TAKE IT BACK

Edited by: Zegox on 10/12/2005 18:44:07 Edited by: Zegox on 10/12/2005 18:41:57 Corvus et al,
Over the last few weeks I have made an in-game career of stealing ore from macros/farmers. During this time I have made an important observation about my prey.
Most "macros" actually have someone at the helm - the term "isk farmer" would probably be more accurate for 90% of the suspected macro ops. I have yet to run into a mining op that was 100% automated, as they will usually respond to bumps, thefts, etc. eventually by convo'ing you and insulting you in some interesting language, targeting your ship, bumping you, etc.
Most of these mining ops are probably run by a single person manning 4 or 5 accounts simutaneously, using macros to aid the process (usually on the barges to automatically drop the ore in the jetcan as the hold fills up) while the human monitor runs the hauler. I came to this conclusion after noticing that attempts at theft usually go unnoticed unless the hauler is nearby.
This probably explains why so few macros are being banned, as most of the time there is someone there that can answer convo requests from CCP and it is too difficult to distinguish between a macro that auto drops ore into the jetcan, and someone that just sits there and moves it manually. This may also explain why you were targeted and fired upon - there may have actually been someone there that saw you and hoped to scare you away with a few shots. Obviously they didn't know who they were dealing with

well, the one I targetted that had already stopped moving didn't target back, probably due to max target count on the roids. The one that WAS moving auto-targetted back. Still, the small laser had to be triggered manually after the lock if he wasn't there to mouse it onto me. Unless, of course, there's an NPC rat resistance built into the equation. There's no harm for a macro miner to start shooting, because he won't be leaving the belt anytime soon.
Not the first reported macro miner resisting, either. Looks to me like what started as players trying to protect their game is turning into a real war against macroers.

I found a op with the exact same layout(2 apocs, mammoth hauler) operating in a .4 system recently. After about 5 minutes of me flying around the belt, one of the apocs targetted me and send his paltry 3 drones against me. After popping the drones, an alliance mate showed up and proceeded to pop all 3(I was just in a rifter myself). None of them even tried to escape, despite the fact at least one apoc and the hauler could have done so easially, confirming my suspicion that it was indeed a macro op. In any case, they fired on me without provocation in nominally Huzzah space, and therefore died.
Like someone earlier in the thread said, these ops are not entirely automated, which may account for why they manage to escape bannination. The slow response times however make them easy targets.

Oh well, their skill defecit means they don't fit WCS...gotta use CPU enhancements to get all those Miner IIs to fit, which also means they're shield tanking (a big oopsie with Amarr ships).
So no chance of using WCS on crappy shield tank setups. Easy money, m8ies, easy money.

today a corp mate encountered a macro mining op in lowsec. 5 barges, ferox, 2 mammoths. the marco warped them to station at 15km when someone entered belt and they sat there. ofcourse i had to see that myself, resulting in 4 barges being killed at station, sentrytanking in hac, 1 mammoth and pod killed in belt. meanwhile the last barge and the ferox that was used for npc protection woke up and ran. another pod was killed later aswell.

When you've got 40 people in a room, it's only a matter of time before they simply setup massive perma-blobs and start going after the zydrine.

Low-sec farming is the next, inevitable step. When high-sec no longer provides safety there's no reason to stay.
I'm a bit worried about t2 barges in that respect. If a top-level t2 barge costs a billion isk, that's not much to macroers and farmers. And you won't kill it with anything less than a suicide BS.

1B is a big hit for an isk farmer. First reason being that T2 insurance only covers mineral costs And doesnt cover fitted mods for that matter either.
We can only pray that they'll be dumb enough to use T2 ships.

Edited by: Lexandrius Megens on 11/12/2005 16:42:46 I found some remarkable behavour aswell. Yesterday i had 9 macros on my system. They were all mining one belt at groups of 3. (2 barges and 1 hauler) All unmanned fully auto.
I went up there with my indy and took about 20.000m3 of omber that was in the jetcans.. thear haulers simply could not haul fast enough.
When i took all the jetcans they stoped mining after a while (the barge hold must have been full) For the next minutes they didnt do ****... so a little bell starts to rinkle and i send my alts to them and position my alts at all 3 groeps about 1KM range.
NOT ONE of them started mining and NOT ONE of them made new jetcans. (usualy called aaaaaaaaaaaa or 1111111111111 etc) It seems that they where progammed when someone is near they should not jetcan anymore. I left my alts for 4 hours on a row and (after watching 2 movies) when i checked on my alts again the where still there.. not mining sitting there and doing absolutely nothing.
After those 4 hours a frigate shows up and is bumping my alts out of the way. He did good at it. He privated me and asked me why i was jamming his barges. So I let him know that I eat constatina wire and p i s s napalm when its about Macro miners. Ofcouse a petition whent out the door emediatly. I got a reply from CCP tat they take it up the high admins and i should not del. the petition or it will get lost in the process.
Not long after he and all his macros stoped his opps and left the system.
This indicates a REAL BIG ass macro miner, that prob. has like 20 PC's running and all 4x EVE thats like 80 macros. My simple ass notebook can run 3 alts at a time so there you go.
Anyway, its easy to "jam" macrominers in 0.5 space or higher. (atleast the kind i had in my belts) Just loot thair cans and put an alt near them. That will prevent them restarting. I dont know if that works with all of them!

If you totally empty a can then the 3min jettison rules kicks in after the second empyting and can wreck some of the macros I believe. Always leave one unit in them.

Intersting read... I am not a macro miner and I give a s*** if you are blowin them into pieces. I am just getting annoyed when I am ice harvesting in secure space and I am getting targeted every 5 mins or asked "Are u macro mining"!?!
I am not sitting in front of my pc while mining. I am mainly doin something else but my ship, after the cargohold is full, is not moving back. That does not make me a macro miner and the thought getting my ship blown up only because someone wanted to be the "revenger" really makes me not enjoying the game anymore.
I think it is a thin red line to walk on!
