Computer games don't get any better then this. All these Options and stuff, So i don't really get why it has only 17k accounts. All other MMORPGs are basicly just some Third-Person rubbish.
Or doesn't CCP advertise much as other game developers? or is it because they aren't really that populair as other game developers?

kieron said 80k subscribers the other day, they dont log on all at once ------------------------------- I have an idea.
How about you get banned 15 minutes from the server everytime you take a sec hit ? --Lady Beeblebrox |

I think a lot of people want third-person rubbish, EVE is way to complicated for a lot of people.

Well one thing, eve has ALOT more than 17k accounts, its just that they are spread over pretty much all the timezones so you don't see them all online at the same time. Also the online population has been steadily growing over the last year.
That said, there are a number of reasons why eve doesn't have the same size player base as say, wow.
Eve has a very different style of play than most mmo's that doesn't cater to everyones taste, it's a good deal harsher and for the most part doesn't "hold the players hand" as they play the game. This tends to put off players that want more grinding than any real thought put into their gameplay and are afraid of genuine loss to other players or npcs. It's also a sci-fi game and it seems alot of people have a preference for fairies, elves and all that ****, personally I don't get it but that's me. There are plenty of other reasons but I'm too tired to bother mentioning them.

Aye an thats 80k on one server.
As far as I am aware, WoW has several thousand subscribers, per server. Even though they have 100 servers, EVE still has the most subscribers per server, since there is only ONE! :D
Now, from what I have seen, WoW lags like crazy when just 20 people fight. Imagine what a WoW fleet battle with 200 to 300 people would be like! lol would be a thousand times worse than even EVE.

If EVE wasn't at the top of so many polls, it'd be underrated, but it is, so it's not... I think __________________________________________________

EVE is definetly not underrated, in the sense that it is one of the very very few games that recieve so much constant praise around the world, other games may get a good review, but are then forgotten quite easily. EVE tough, even though there arent millions of subscribers such as for WoW, we do have the most active and satisfied playerbase, at least i think so. Not to mention the fact that we all can completely change the gameworld, seriously, how many games write official news reports about corporations and alliances that are all created by the PLAYERS?? How many games take the TIME AND EFFORT to create a system in which those very same people get to decide themselves new empires (just wait, the alliances will become empires soon, with the factional warfare and all). Complete with the entire universe map changing details about soverignety etc. In WoW most players reach lvl 60 in a few weeks unless they are powerleveling, and then what? Just as every other mmorpg out there, thats the end of it. All that remains is chatting and showing off, but that doesnt make much sense since there are thousands of other people with the very same equipment. In EVE it never ends, its sick, whatever you do, theres always someone better (well in 79999 cases out of 80000 anyway), always something to fight for, always something left to create and change.

Exactly - most games seem to try to appeal to the lowest common denominator and so they, sadly, have wide appeal. While Eve, right from the beginning, was clear about aiming higher than that - effectively it's been marketed as a game for a niche market, which is what it's achieved. All for the better in my view as this niche seems to comprise more mature, more adventurous, more community oriented and generally all round smarter people.
But none of those things are highly valued in the current market :(
I'd agree with what was said further up though - I don't think Eve's under-rated. It's under-reported because the magazines and websites have to cater to the much larger numbers of people interested in WoW and EQ etc, but when Eve is reported it seems to get consistently good reviews in a way that few other games see.

Underrated by most MMO players, overrated in terms of "COOL, this game is just like elite, it is so big and you can get a bounty on your head if you're bad and..." which people who has never played the game like to state. Name one Eve review that does not say it is like Elite, and then babble on and on about features that are in practice not used the way they are described in the article. A fine example is the way fleet battles are portrayed in these reviews.

Edited by: Zolofine on 11/12/2005 11:25:59 Yah that's cause EVE actually presents a real challenge. Yes that lootninja can come right by and steal your loot and the only person doing something abotu it is going to be you. No the GM's aren't going to spank him for that. Yes those pk's can get away with killing you over and over even your not playing on the specifically stated 'pvp' server! And OMG there is a pretty good chance that something exciting like getting killed will actually happen unless you spend every waking houre trying to avoid it...
If you haven't taken a look out in the real world lately, you should. You will see that most people prefer instant gratification, as little challange as possible and more of the same instant gratifying crap for aslong as ti takes them to get totally bored.
EVE isn't for mainstreamers because it takes more than to the first that comes to mind to get anywhere in the game. WHADDAYAMEAN i can't just mine veldspar and put myself in a dread?!... OMG LAME . Tactics?! So you mean the uberwtfbigswordofslayingeveryoneandtheirfamily isn't the be all end all?! NO POWERLEVELING OMG EVE SUX!
Edit: WTF... omg Grimwalius your sig freaked the hell out of me... for a minute i thought my all nighter of EVE was playing tricks on me when your avatar suddenly turned to look at me O_O You call, we haul. Now also providing 'other' services! |

So true.
I tried 'life without EvE' and worked my way through a whole list of other MMOGs over 5 months or so. The games just feel empty and pointless after a while. I still play some of them with friends, but they just don't have the depth of EvE. -- ** bACk and coNFused ** |

Thank goodness it's not as popular as WoW. Last thing we need is this game to get the attention of Sony.

Don't sell yourself short, you are still far more intelligent then the game critics that rate EVE poorly
... you will see more and more marketing which in turn will bring you more players to torture. |

Eve requires more attention, effort, time and resilience then most other MMO's. It also requires you to itnereact more to get succesfull, and depends on a whole host of rl abilities and skills if you want to play the top end game as for example a leader.
You could say that Eve is just more difficult then the others on all fronts. And I dont mean how hard the npc's are, I mean how much the game asks of you. _______________________________________________

Wise words ... I'm sure many here remember when a big name (EA) put their eyes on a smaller one (Westwood, EnB and OSI, UO), and we could continue with more examples (MS/Turbine, Sony/Verant). You don't want that to happen to any of the games you love :)
