It brang alot of new people into the mmorpg world and these people get bored and once you play the genre, you never leave! All these people are looking for a new game as sites like www.mmorpg.com have it as number 1 :) Even if most of these players go onto other games WOW still has helped EVE quite alot in terms of subs and doesn't show any signs of stopping.

All your assumptions is conjucture at best and borderline absurd. The majority of the WOW playerbase would not like EVE:Online. They probably move to EQ:2. The recent "rush" of new players is probably due from an exodus from SWG.
Now, the question is. Will they stay?

some leave for WOW but keep eve active - seeing a lot of 3-12 month returning players who played got bored and now like what they see (another plus for eve's constant improvement)
Others are coming over as WOW lv 60 and want a more open eneded challange others are coming from SGW and EO2.

I think EVE would also draw people that play often, but don't powergame.
If I played WoW or any other grinder, I would never make it past mid-level. EVE doesn't constantly remind me that I'm probably losing. If it cost 1M isk to post on the boards, I might feel otherwise of course.
It's probably impossible for me to determine whether I am with the majority or an outlier on this.
I do agree with the sentiment that once you are willing to subscribe to any game, you tend to continue to be willing to do so from that point on since it is so easy to find entertainment that way.
Then again, I may just be miserly seeing as I got rid of tv altogether, and don't cruise the strip as often. Most of my old buddies are married now anyway, and have more important things to deal with, like offspring.

i first got into MMO's with WoW EU final beta and i did love the game and it still has a special place in my heart. i would so much like to get back to it but then i remember the poor economy where player made items are worth nothing really and the simply horrible and rude community. throw in the steady stream of content updates that only added yet another new dungeon for big raid groups. always hated raid groups cos they were ran by some **** who went berserk on you if you did something wrong or differently.
left from WoW, mate recommended EVE and i happened to find a trial for it so i decided to give it a shot and liked it immediately once i got past the tutorial. later in the evening i went to check if i was able to pay the game with my card and ended up paying for it accidentally even though i still had 13 days of trial time left ( lol ) and i have been playing since that.
imo, i think there are quite a lot of people in EVE who got into MMO's through WoW and found the concept of the genre to be interesting or lovely but didnt necessarily enjoy playing WoW so they decided to try the best MMO in the market instead of sticking with the simplest ( is that a word ? )

I play both at the moment, although I have my doubts whether that many people who come from WoW could handle EvE and the way it takes so long to learn skills etc. ----------- I would have a sig but it might break a arm, leg or even worse a rule. |

I'd say WoW was more of a gateway drug for me hehe. I've played it for a couple months and it's allright, but it's certainly nothing special. I've been searching about for an MMO that is a true RPG with no lame level grinding/classes, and from all that I have seen thus far, Eve is a winner in all respects for the sort of gameplay I want.
What got me tuned into Eve was actually the arcticle concerning the Guiding Hand Social Club assassination and raid of the Ubiqua Seraph corp in PC Gamer. Then hearing that CAD had a growing presence in Eve sealed the deal. I ran around on Dark Iron in WoW with The Rapscallions (the CAD guild) and it was a total blast just playing with em.

Edited by: Vishnej on 13/12/2005 02:49:58 Judging from the charts, WoW mostly brought in people that hadn't played an MMO before. While the lineage phenomenon has much of korea playing, the US had the MMO market spread over lots of medium-small games without tons of market share. The games with >5% market share we had were UO (dying down), everquest, SWG, FFXI, and CoH.
Since WoW has come out, general MMO playership has risen from 2.75m to 5m. Non-WoW MMO playership rose from 2.75m to 3m. A full 40% of MMO players are now in WoW. Though anecdotal evidence says that a lot of people left their games for WoW, I'd say it definitely added massively to the overall number of people playing MMO's by introducing Blizzard fanboys who'd never tried the genre.
Data taken from total active subscribers and total active subscribers - absolute contribution charts on http://www.mmogchart.com/
If you look at the relative contribution chart, you see how much of a dent WoW put in the market share of the other big names. ---------------------------- T2 Destroyers: a proposal Requested Changes: An alphabet's worth |

I think WoW is still... wow? Thinking about it, Blizzard's success today is due to the following factors:
1. Fan-based. 2. Cashing on a mature theme i.e. WarCraft. 3. Fan loyalty? I mean, who didnt grow up with Blizzard? Have to admit that they didnt produce much games since 1993 but all of their titles have been hits so far. 4. Heavy marketing. Well, Blizzard took the initiative to market to the Far East rather than some of the main MMOs, which are mainly Western based.
Furthermore, Blizzard is also cashing in on their success with WoW by developing their current fans, i.e. the "little" players of WoW and who knows they will probably be the next generations of fans from Blizzard. In a way, Blizzard has a vision on how to maintain their fan base though even if they somehow forget about their older fans. I am just saying they, must be doing something right that is giving them the success that they are seeing with WoW. ----------------

Yup, that might well be a factor as well. I know I was totally hyped when I saw Tim post on CAD that he was checking EVE out. ____________________

WoW has helped Eve out a LOT.
It's kept all the 12 year old brats playing on their parents account away from Eve.

Seems to have problems tough. At another forum where we talked about Eve regarding the trial. To put a quote:

Can anyone help me with a reply?

I do no play WoW, but let it put me bluntly:
The way some people behave, I cannot really say that playing EVE gives you the right to claim some sort of elitism.
WoW HAS helped EVE indirectly - and other MMORPGs too. Why?
It has opened the market to players who did never hear of MMORPGs before and who thought paying a monthly fee for a game is just absurd.
Also, players lamenting over WoW's lack of highend content and longevity might get enticed by EVE.

Amen. I come from WoW. WoW was just too much grinding. The graphics is very beautiful indeed, but that didn't keep my interest more than a month. Looking for a game with more freedom and more options, I arrived at Eve Online, and stuck there.
Also, even on my first day here I've had some discussions about theoretical physics and math in the corp channel There's cerainly some smart people here in the community, not only 13 year old brats. We can claim some elitism (or at least, sci-fi-nerdism) here

WoW has opened up MMORPGs to the average fps/whatever gamer who considered him/herself not nerdy enough for an MMO. It was simplistic in its design, and easy to level, hence its massive player base and massive reach. Everyone could kill the best bosses, and get the best loot, and it didnt even require you to be truly hardcore to do so.
However, for 'real' gamers who have been playing other MMOs at the high end for years, WoW presented no challenge. It presented no reason to play more than anyone else, no reason to have better skills than anyone else, since a top guild could clear top instances no better than a mediocre guild.
It's these players mostly, the older MMO players, who have left WoW, and are now seeking refuge. Along with some new MMO gamers who didnt like WoW for normal reasons, plus the newer influx from SWG players, EvE is getting a large boost.
I do think the influx will stop in a few months time, though Eve will continue to grow as people hear about the game. Personally, I've played most big MMOs in some of the top, famous guilds in the world, and I dont think any other MMO has ever come close to being as good as EvE is. I wish I'd discovered it a long time ago.

Hmm then I'm not 'most' players. If you hate long egocentric posts, move on with the next posts.
Anyway my MMORPG history:
1) Neocron (FPS-MMORPG, a long time with my old beloved pvp clan FAnG)
2) EVE ( looking for something new, because my clan was inactive due to planetside. I also tried Anarchy Online a bit but I didn't become addicted )
3) Neocron ( Although I liked EVE, I had to leave, because my clan started playing again and I enjoyed killing people with them ... and having a lot of fun on Teamspeak )
4) played Planetside with my old mates and EVE alone ( Neocron was changed too much since the beginning, we noticed that it will never be the same like in the old days, so we left )
5) WoW ( reunited with my old clan again, spending most of our spare time working on our strategies e.g to kill 40 people raid bosses and finally Ragnaros. This part of WoW is really great. But it's hard work. We met at 19:30 and worked our way through the instance until 3 o'clock in the night to get better an better every Friday and did shorter runs on other days 2-3 times a week. And after many weeks of practising you master the instance. Top PvE content !)
6) Return to EVE ( I had enough of doing WoW PvE 'WORK' . I wasn't willing to invest the same time into that again, when my guild started with the next new high-level instance Blackwing Lair. I felt that I had reached my goals and the next challenge wouldn't be different. I either play something like that with high aims or not at all and everyone in my guild feels like that. )
Now I'm in EVE again. I have fun. It doesn't feel like work. I don't see that I'm restricted in my gameplay in any way. I can change the world a 'bit'. I can do something totally different tomorrow. Although it's an intelligent game it's relaxing. So I stick with it for some time.
