I recently found an article detailing what fonts are good for web design. Though the article specifically deals with fonts on web pages, it also addresses fonts for computer screens in general.
The article is here: http://www.sitepoint.com/article/anatomy-web-fonts
The specific things the article mentions are: - wide letter spacing - wide punch width - tall x-height
The new EVE font has: - narrow letter spacing - narrow punch width - moderate x-height
I would encourage CCP to please consider usability more carefully when choosing their next font for EVE.

the new font is like a new shape nissan micra, BMW mini or subaru impreza -
everyone hates it when it first comes out, but after a few months it begins to be seen as "cute".

Cute != Usable.
Hatchbacks like the Nissan Micra or my own (beloved) Toyota Echo are cute and usable. The new font may be cute, but it's not usable, and it never will be.

Looking at your screenshot, the main problem is the letter spacing. Bump up the letter spacing a touch or two and you might have a good starting point.

Just as an example of how the font impedes readability, I bought something in a system with a lower case 'g' in its name. Upon examining my wallet, it looked like a 'q' and I spent the better part of a minute trying to figure out why my map search turned up no results when I was typing in the exact system name. ---------- |

As has been pinted out to you repeatedly, you are using twice the screen real estate, for half the usable text, when compaired to the old font.
That isn't "crystal clear" or anything like it; it's amplifying the signal through the moon to get readable data from it.

Edited by: rig0r on 16/12/2005 08:58:17 At 1600x1200, the new font kind of hurts the eyes. It's ok at lower resolutions.

Please stop quoting or commenting on TrolldenRatio's ZOMGCRYSTALCLEAR screenshots. Anyone is entitled to their opinion, but derailing thread after thread by yelling everything is fine when it clearly isn't is pusing it a bit.

I run in 1600 x 900 and 1920 x 1200. Guess what? My eyes hurt. -

the problem is, that on a joke of a setting like 1024x768 with all text on large size (what's he using, the Fisher-price Baby's First Monitor?), it is perfectly readable. the problem is the troll's unable to comprehend that outside his neolithic monitor, it's unreadable, and so continues to bash his club against the wall, convinced that he, and only he is right....

The front is to small and close together, i dont why ccp keep doing this every patch, "quick quick lets change font", Playesr "NO No lets change it back again we can not read it!"
You think they would have learnt by now, to leave it alone, i know they want a cool new look and all, but when you are playing eve for 8 hours a day there is no way in hell u can put up with that font.

All I want is for '1iIl' and '0oO' to be distinguishable. Current one still makes it impossible to tell 'zero' from 'oh'. ---- "Well in this case, he's being flamed, and rightly so, for whinning about a game mechanic that doesn't actually exist." -Lorth |

Well, it's clear that the motivation for the font change is Unicode support.
I logged this font as a 'bug' last week. I'm in my forties, and play Eve on a 22" Iiyama @ 1600 x 1200 and a Dell D800 laptop @ 19200x1200. I can cut down the resolution on the CRT, but not on the laptop.
The font is blurry and indistinct (though better on the Dell), and makes my eyes water. I'm trying to adjust font size, width and whatnot to make it bearable, but I would appeal to CCP to at least give us some options here.

Well apparently they HAD to change the font. So that's ok. But I'm sure there are plenty of good unicode fonts out there that are readable at higher resolutions as well.

Got to admit I love it :)
1600 x 1200 on a 19" decent screen, looks lovely.

The font is very nasty at high resolutions - I have no idea what I am typing. Will have to switch to my low res monitor until this gets changed. :( |

Few people ply eve in 1024x768 mode.

Well I play on my 17" 1280*1024 res LCD. I would LOVE to play this game in 1600*1200 but have no option. I can get used to the font but prefered the last one. Like another poster said there must be other fonts available in unicode. My only real gripe about EVE is not being able to set the font's attributes and whatnot. Other than that a great game!
ps, I was so tired last night that I fell alseep at the keyboard in the middle of a asteroid belt and woke up to my Thorax not there and replaced with this little "pod shaped" ship....needless to say I was very peeved Must......Have......Sleep "No matter where you go, there you are." |
