So after a decade of hype, I decide to take the plunge into Hyperspace. Woohoo, I am gonna Pirate , Bounty hunt , mine and whatever my heart desires. But, most of all I am gonna fly my spaceship across the cosmos.
Fly?
No flying?
wtf?
.....Disappointed, uninstalling now.
How do you play a space game like this where you do not actually fly the ships. All these cool awesome ships and no flying? I have a radial to navigate my ship? No physics?
What is the hook? I am truly curious.
Please do not tell me to go back to WoW, I have never played it nor desire to.

Thanks for the reply. I did not mean to turn this into an SC thread.
I truly tried EVE, I had no idea you do not manually fly the crafts.

I will be honest. I recently saw SC. I have been wanting to play a sci fi mmo for a while now. So, SC is not gonna be out for at least a year or more. So, my friend and I said, "Let's try EVE!!!"
So we did. My main reason for wanting to play a game like EVE or SC is for the PvP. I thought we would be flying the space craft manually. That is what I was looking forward to. I was thinking a cool space simulator with pvp and an economy plus all the juicy drama an mmo world brings. EVE has everything I described except for the Space Simulator part. So, I have to wait until another sci fi game to come out.
I was just curious to know what the hook is with EVE? Obviously it is a very healthy mmo when it comes to longevity and population. I am sure it has many good aspects to keep people interested. Unfortunately for me, I wanted a space simulator with pvp.

I do not want to fly ship manually (real astronauts do not fly manually as well, inlest in emergency situations)
I took this game as a perfect (almost) space simulator. Very detailed and nicely designed world, ready to explore. With the opportunity of PvP in factional wars or in corporation vs corporation wars.
But some players made a stupid copy of Dark orbit out of it. PvP is all what they see here and I was expecting something more out of this game. If I want PvP I go pplay games like World of tanks, where I have PvP when I want and ready. Not when some 7 years old char with over bilion ISK in implantants and faction cruiser decide to cure his/her/it cripled selfesteem by shooting newbee ship that is not able to fight back. I was in the middle of security mission with over 20 drone tragets around me. So I could not see him comming in overview before it was too late. And he shoot me down in three shots, despite I still have had over 5 k effective hit points to that moment. No point to keep play game like this. Sore loosers like the one, who shot me in the back, made this game PvP just everywhere, high / low null sec... And to be PvP game Eve is not that fair |

You got killed in low-sec. In High I was never visited at a mission. You should try missioning in High-sec.
However, if you want to quit after your very first loss, I guess you will not be happy with Eve. |

In EVE, you are the captain of your ship, not it's helm person. You command your ship. There is more to controlling your ship than it appears you have discovered judging from your OP. The hook in EVE is that the hook is made of hundreds if not thousands of hooks. The EVE experience is delightfully complex. You're missing out but that's cool. EVE isn't for everyone, as they say. I wish you enjoyment in whatever other game(s) you find. bye! o/

No eve is not fair , wich makes had a excellent "simulator" its its strenght , ist unforgiving , space is a hard cold place liek it should be.
And no , i have killed dozens of players that are way older with better ships & inplants , you have to think your stratagie , even if it does seems like only press f1 and w8 who is the winner , lots of things during a fight you can do to make it win.

For me the hook was the hunt. Finding creative ways to track down, trap & counter my opponent(s) is what keeps me coming back.
Edit for actual advice:
Also, try battleatar galactica. Its a manual flight, top down shooter in space. Its not very complex but it is free and when the devs don't suck...which they always do...its pretty fun. Good for log in, blow stuff up now, go to bed. |

You were not killed because that player was 7 years older, but because he used the game mechanics better.
Looks like you were in lowsec. There is no concord protection there, so anyone can attack you without repercussion. You know you are taking that risk when you jump into a lowsec system. If you're not ready to deal with that, don't go there. The eve-client even gives a warning about it if you are jumping into lowsec for the first time.
erg cz wrote:So I could not see him comming in overview before it was too late When he shows up in overview, it's to late. But you can see him coming waaaay before that. Since you are in a mission area, he will need to scan you down. This means you could have seen his combat-scanner probes on direction scanner, after that he needs to warp to your mission area wich would also have been visible on you're directional scanner way before he shows up on grid (and thus overview) giving you more then enough time to get out, especially if you are aligned at all times. |

When I first installed EVE I found it pretty boring tbh and did not bother to play beyond a free trial.
Then after I got sick and tired of all the other theme park MMOs out there I thought I would give EVE another go. I got playing with EVE-UNI then moved to a corp and started learning the game, the industry, the PVP the risk, the player run economy, the single shard, CCP there is nothing else in the gaming world that compares.
I have now been playing for a few years, I still don't know how to do everything, still have a lot in game that I want to try and still enjoy logging in.
When you can see everything that EVE has, not having twitch controls isn't something so terrible. I would say give it another go try to find a corp to play with who can help show you the ropes and maybe you will get to see the appeal |

Not being a twitch game is the hook for me, I'm not that competitive in twitch games, my reactions these days are nowhere near as quick as they were 25 years ago, neither is my eyesight.
In Eve there's a sizeable contingent of players who are semi retired and retired, there's also those of us that are not quite that old, but in our 40's and 50's. The more RTS nature of Eves control systems allow them to compete on a level playing field with all the youngsters, while reaction time is still a factor, being able to keep your cool and plan ahead are just as important.

Manually having to fly a spaceship all the time bores quickly. It is no more fun then driving a truck. By some simulation game if you want to pilot anything. Luckily Eve is not like that. Reopen the EVE gate so we can invade Serenity. Goons can go first. |

If you thought manually flying your ship was supposed to be the main attraction to EVE you, my friend, came to the wrong game.
If you want a online game that tests your manual dexterity there's a whole host of first person shooters out there and if you want vehicles instead of people then there's also world of tanks.
The main "hype" of eve is that the player interaction always has consequences |

Here here to all the above. EVE is largely about information and how you use it to form a good strategy against your opponent. Now, when combat happens, it happens fast and furious -- but if you are not prepared with the appropriate information, you might as well be toast. EVE is not a game for the kind of gamer who only likes CoD-style shootemup-and-win games.
With that said, I am still very puzzled that the OP didn't even stick around long enough to realize that manual piloting is not only possible, it is an extremely important skill to learn in both the PvP and PvE sides of the game. That's some serious level of gaming ADD right there. |

You can pilot your ship manually, double click where you want to go in space and your ship heads there. There is some skill to it in pvp as it affects your trajectory, velocity etc and can help you be harder to hit/track (rather than just orbiting where their guns actually catch upto you).
Also as a side note. You are not the pilot of the ship you are flying. You are it's Captain and have a full crew compliment, including a pilot. You just give the orders. Hopefully you can stick around for a bit longer and find out EvE is an incrediable game. |

Just to clear the air, I do now see the plethora of "hooks" in EVE. I was looking for a good space sim that included manually piloting a ship. For the old school gamers think of the old Falcon series of Flight simulators but in a sci fi setting. When it comes to manually piloting a ship, I am talking a bit more then just point and click. I was hoping to need to use a good old flight sim joystick.
Hey, no big deal, in due time I will get what I was hoping for down the road.

Completely agree with your assessment. The full EVE experience is above all a thinking man's game. No slight on you ladies - I know that there's dedicated contingent of female players.
The EVE environment rewards patience, imagination and enterprise - qualities in short supply amongst many of the younger attention span-challenged players. I'm been in only since the beginning of June of this year, and I'm having a blast. The impression i get from the OP is that he doesn't quite get the value of cooperation in this game. Joining a new player friendly corp would be a very good way to get deeper into what makes the EVE universe so much fun.
