I just installed ZoneAlarm to protect my computer against the recent hacker attacks, and lo and behold, Eve tried to act as a server? The hell?

It's not a server in the sense that it does not 'serve' anything, but zonealarm classifies it as one because it sends data. _____________________________________ Perpetually driven, your end is our beginning. "Can I be a consultant for EVE II?" - WhiteDwarf |

I disabled the server part, and allowed it to access the internet. Eve runs fine simply accessing the net, so what info is it sending? And why? Spyware?

[sarcasm]It is broadcasting your credit card information, surfing history, and personal profile to every Internet backbone server in the world. 1 Billion people now know you like brunettes and you wet your bed.[/sarcasm]

Dunno why eve opens ports. I'm behind a router, with no ports to my PC, and don't seem to have any more than the usual set of problems.

You cant play game without sending data to the server. It will send info ie. <I want to warp, I want to dock, check my mail, etc.>. If you configure zonealarm to not let eve send any data the game will be unplayable.

A server isn't about sending data, it's about letting people connect to your box.

Funny, I'm playing it even now with the server part disabled.
Apparently there's more to it than simply being a part of the game.

If you don't know the answer, then maybe you shouldn't reply. I am hoping a DEV or Employee of teh game could explain this to me.

EQ was packetsniffing users computers at one time and denied it at first when confronted about it. Then of course they stopped after admitting to it when many people insisted it was true.

I believe that the game has a mini http server installed in it which you can enable in the prefs.ini file.
I'm not sure exactly what they're going to use it for, but I remember someone (papasmurf?) talking about something like that.

Edited by: agrizla on 16/08/2003 01:55:50 Alternatively it could just be that Zonealarm (being free) really isn't that good.
But of course we wouldn't actually want to think that would we as that might bring up the spectre of actually paying for decent software
I realise this is a hard concept for some of you to get your heads around but people actually do pay for s/w and in some cases it really does go to pay to improve the s/w. Hell in some cases it actually makes it work*
* Obviously not in the cases where 70%+ of the cash goes to pay for advertising space in the press. Which probably isn't the case with ZoneAlarm I must add but is with other "security" apps.

if I know CCP this game probibally does.
They might have put it in the game, at some point in beta, and scrapped the concept, or their just putting it on hold and working on other stuff... But if EVE has a SERVER running on it, that would be really cool, becuase it would allow you to host your own EVE sites... like. the in-game brouser do something like..
http://reis-place.eve
would need to be worked on so you could run it 24/7 and stuff, but, it's a really cool concept because that could give you a EVE domain name, and other nifty abilities.

Here's a clue: You don't need to act as a server to play an online game.

I'm setting up a Zezwall on my computer. It's a new kind of firewall that only lets data in, never out.

Zone alarm is a perfectly decent sofware firewall for home use, no need to pay for one. Though there are some less resouce hungry (also free) FWs for people with older PCs.

For your information... when you act as a server, you are allowing outsiders to use your computer to send and retrieve their data. You can send and retrieve your own data without being a server yourself.
Ya learn something new about the internet every day.
