The time left for me to train for either is about the same, so the question is: Which should I train for first? (ie- which ship would be "better" for me to get?)
Im looking to be able to do some tackling with a group, but most importantly want to be able to take care of my self solo if i have too.

depends on what you want to do. the male can be a good long range tackler (15-20k) and the veng can tank pretty well.
if you are just getting into t2 frigs, i'd say go with the male.. it's a bit cheaper to die in.

Malediction is faster, tackles as well as a vengeance and does more damage. It doesn't tank as well. You will lose inties in the beginning though.

vengence is rubbish.
get a malediction and a retribution.
the retribution is teh king of af tanking/dmg imo. but u have 1 med slot...use it wisely.

The vengeance is really not that bad as some people say. Sure, it might be the low end of AFs, but its highly exaggerated.
I haven't flown the malediction yet, but it does "look" like a sturdy ship.

i been flying amarr af's since january..unfortunately the vengence doesnt fill any role very good, hence why its rubbish.

Its a nice ship and all, but Id like to have the 3 mid slots. And the Male/Veng color scheme look sweet, heh.
From the looks of the posts, it seems pretty decisive that the Male is the winner for me.

I fought a Vengeance once...the Daredevil flying with him did more dmg.
