I only use it for pvp because if I'm not pvping I'd rather be listening to music than nasal nerd voices whining about something I don't care about.

For the corps I have looked into none of them required all the time TS. Only for ops. Which makes sense.
One essential part of successful combat is good communication. And you just don't get that with typed text.
As for people that think it ruins the illusion of eve, I would think voice comms would make it more realistic, with all the ships technology surely these pilots don't sit and read a teleprompter.
Or you can just not join a corp, you can progress in EVE just fine as a solo player. I haven't joined a corp yet, and I have been playing for almost 2 years. And I solo 99% of the time.

Teamspeak is a must for PvP, IMNSHO. Outside of PvP I don't see any real need for teamspeak but it still helps. I would not join a corp that did not have a secure teamspeak server available to them.
Of course, teamspeak is only as useful as you make it.

If you need out-of-game help to play the game, then you're doing it wrong.
If you can PvP without TS and beat a corp that uses TS, they're either a) total, absolute noobs, or b) you're a PvP god.
Simply put, TS is a neccessity.
You pretty much just proved my point. Using out-of-game mechanics to net an in-game advantage is not good. Even though in this particular case, CCP allow it.

A couple of hours on TS gives me a headache 95% of the time.

I never speak on TS. I only listen during ops. Hell, I don't even have a functional mic.

TS is a nice addition to EVE tbh. Make corpies come a little bit closer

Yblarbo don't mind his voice, but others do. Talking like a foolish redneck that just got done putting a chicken bone in his nose doesn't do much for the socializing.

I am currently running ventrilo+TS with 2 Eve clients running at the same time on this spec of system right now as I post this.
I experiance no lag.
CPU: Athlon XP 1600+ Clocked to 1.41 Ghz Ram: 512 DDR PCI2100 Video: Geforce 5200 FX 128mb Driver Version: 71.84 Direct X: 9.0c Sound: Onboard Mobo sound: Realtek (Mobo is Gigabyte GA-7VT600-L F15 Bios) O/S: Windows XP HOME Service Pack 2 Internet 234.3 KB/sec down 31.0 KB/sec Up ADSL 2.2 Meg line system directly connects to the internet
of course when I'm in combat I'll kill of the 2nd client and vent since those are just my "Extra" fun things.

You're funny. Okay, tell me what to do in a fleet fight. Quick.... too slow.
Darn.
The alternative to TS is that CCP code their own voice client, which is a waste of everyone's time.

The beauty of online gaming is that young punks and old fogeys can play together and get along rather well. It's easier to be equals in a text world. Voice communications adds more real life baggage to the mix. Voice communication is also more personal...it's not a toon someone is mad at, they're mad at YOU.
As for voice being more realistic...well, maybe some of us sound like fighter pilots but I bet most of us don't. With text, you use your imagination to make it realistic.
The medium is the message. There's nothing wrong with TS, I just find it changes the feel of the games I play and often makes for a more intense experience when instead I'm just in the mood to relax.

it's impossible to have effective combat without voice comms. Simply impossible. The amount of info going through cannot be accomodated by windows and typing. Add ontop of that all the whispers and command channels and you have an irreplacable part for warfare.
The other aspects of the game such as ratting/mining/trading or whatever can be pretty accomodated by regular chats. But in combat reactions and speed of information is the difference between life and pod.

If two groups fight in Eve, and both groups are equal in every way, except one has TS (or something just like it) and the other has to rely on the game chats, the group with TS will win nearly all the time (maybe all time).
Furthermore, TS is not just a minor advantage, its huge.
Not having TS would be like taking a modern military force and taking away all their electronic comm equipment. Its that important.
As for non-combat situations, I HATE typing at length, as typing prevents play. If someone needs more than one or two paragraphs of info from me, I often demand they talk to me on TS. TS is an outstanding tool for allowing detailed and lengthy information transfer WITHOUT stopping game play.

TS is quite important, plus too its a lot more convenient. I have found that it makes those long drawn out mining ops much more bareable. I know that for myself, I keep my local window open in 0.0 and the military channel open and that is all. I dont pay attention to the other flashing windows. I dont have to becuase if somebody is in trouble, they just say something on TS. I may not always be talking on TS, but I do listen. Thats one thing that is nto too bad. I can watch TV while mining and still know when there are hostiles or soemthing because I keep the speakers on.

Hate to say it but Teamspeak/Ventrilo type of voip systems aren't nesceassrily a requirement but, you will notice an improvement of about 150% or better in your success.

Even in an Empire corp, TeamSpeak adds a great deal to the gameplay. The social side of the game really comes alive, you get to know people quicker, build trust quicker, pwn NPCs more efficiently, and just have so much more fun.
Text-based interaction sucks, pure and simple.
