when doing missions for my gallente agent i get lowered faction standings. amarr, caldari and all pirate factions lower their standings towards me. this was not the case a few weeks (or so) ago. the standings DO right themselves over time, but it's still annoying.
i was under the impression that only certain 'pirate'-missions would cause a faction (and/or sec. status) hit, and that those missions would have a really high reward to compensate for this. as it is now ANY mission does it and i don't really see why the guristas would think less of me only because i deliver some minerals to some station at the other end of the galaxy ;).
so, is this a bug or is it intended to be this way? if it is intended to be this way, why? ;)

It's always been this way. It does depend on the agent. But due to the history between the Gallente and Caldari empires, it's natural that if you run Gallente missions, the Caldari might be unhappy, and vice versa.
Some agents don't give hits. Some do.
You should never get a security status hit from an empire agent though. Pirate agents WILL drop your security status. ---------------- Blue Screen of Death CEO Exodus Enterprises |

actually, no it hasn't always been like this. a few weeks (months?) ago ALL factions standings grew higher when doing agent missions, only some did it really slowly.
back then (when i noticed it had changed) i petitioned about something else and threw in a question about this aswell, the reply was that it WAS indeed a bug (that was when papa was on vacation, so it might not have been a qualified answer tho').
and i still find it weird that the pirate factions should think less of me, i mean, i'm still a good pilot - hey, if i wanna work for them i should be benefited by the fact that i've done really good while working for someone else...
i wouldn't mind if faction standings were dropping when doing a mission that has a negative effect for the faction in question (NPC-kill missions etc), but "hey, this pilot has done a really good job transporting minerals for <some gallente corp>, all us pirates should hate him/her" doesn't make sense imo ;)
oh well... would be nice to hear something official about this :P

It's been like this for quite some time, and is intended to be like this. The bug that is being referred to is undoubtedly the "capping" bug. Different issue.
If you help the Amarr, the Minmatar sure aren't going to be happy with you. In the end, it should be nearly impossible for people to be everybody's friend.

But one thing I've been wondering, does it go the other way around?
If you do something that lowers your standing for instance with the amarr's, would the minmatar standing go upp????

It seems like that, yes; e.g. failing a mission for Caldari lowers your Caldari faction while raising the Gallente faction. Apparently the Gallenteans hope your failing a mission for Caldari was intended act of sabotage... :s

Yes the faction gains and losses are definately interesting from an NPC interaction point of view.
It could affect which territories you prefer to fly in, NPC Corps you might want to join, and in general which NPCs and stations you interact with (or even attack). Of course, it's a more long term impact once you've done many missions.

Now I think that sounds far fetched. I think your rating should be particularly abysmal with one faction for another faction to take notice and think better of you.

The change is very minor, so it's not like they're really taking much notice...

If you do level 3 agent missions and get above the level 2 agent max agent standing, then do a level 2 agent mission, your faction actually _lowers_ to the max of the level 2 agent.
I am currently KOS to caldari and amarr police forces due to doing too many gallente agent missions.
I believe (and I am going to test it tonight) that I can easily make myself not KOS to caldari and amarr police forces by simply doing 1 level 1 agent mission for the gallente which will likely set me to the max/min faction standing for the level 1 agent.
That said, using this tactic it is conceivable to murder countless NPC trade caravans, thereby severely lowering my faction with the amarr/caldari, then doing one agent mission for the gallente to instantly become non-KOS.
This, IMHO, should be considered a bug.

... Too late; 'tis was a bug yes, but as far as i can tell it's been fixed already with the last patch. :s
