I am running:
ASUS P4PE P4-2.4Ghz (non HT) 1GB Crucial DDR333 RAM ATI Radeon 9600 PRO Soundblaster Live! Value
I am having no luck with this damned game. I have tried:
Audio: SBLive w/ XP drivers SBLive w/ creative drivers Onboard SoundMAX w/ XP drivers Onboard SoundMAX w/ ASUS drivers No sound card at all ALl 4 levels of acceleration
Video: XP drivers Omega 2474a drivers Catalyst 3.6 Catalyst 3.5
Mode: Windowed mode Full Screen mode
... and every combination of the above.
Cat 2.5 won't install (presumably because the drivers predate the card - the 9600 is to the 9800 as 9500 is to 9700)
Cat 3.6 and Omega won't get past the character selection screen. Cat 3.5 gets into the game, but then resests at some random interval in the tutorial - the first time was when I tried to scoop a drone, the second was when the first attack drone started firing.
I have no problems running virtually any other games I own. I'm about 1 or 2 more days from basically throwing the box in the trash and cancelling my account, because while Eve is very pretty and holds a lot of curiousity for me, I am not going to rip my hair out trying to get this POS to run.

I had the same issues. EVE is the only game out of the hundreds I use that causes this issue. It's also the only DX9 game as well.
Many many ATI users have reported this. My resolution was to use the Catalys 3.0 base drivers. Any other version would eventually freeze my system.
Hope it helps.

I just tried to install Catalyst 3.0 - no good. Apparently 3.0 doesn't support the 9600.

I have gained stability, for the time being...
I installed the latest 845PE inf update from intel:
http://www.intel.com/design/software/drivers/platform/inf.htm
and it seemed to stabilize. Feeling like playing with fire, I reinstalled the omega 2474a drivers and reenabled hardware acceleration on the sound card, and it's still running smoothly.
Now I'm running at 1280x1024 with 4xAA and 4xAF on and the game looks hella-sweet. Mugshots are even loading without crashes.
Hope this helps anyone else who may be reading this. As for me, I'm off to try and learn how to play.
