total n00b here.
I like the idea of fast ships, but are interceptors worth the time and money?
Right now I am flying a Merlin... should I gear my skills now towards cruisers or interceptors as soon as I get my frigate V done?
I realize this has a lot to do with preference, but I'm just curious if anyone out there prefers interceptors and why.

Intys are fast and they are great for pod killing and getting in quick to scramble a ship. They do take quite a bit of skill points if you want to fly them effectively. I fly them but am not that great with them. I would move to a cruiser to get your feet wet or you will be losing ships left and right if you are going to pvp.
Here is what happened to me, lost a dom because I didn't know what tanking was. Lost a dom because I didn't know you had to activate hardeners. Lost a brutix because I sucked at that point. Got back into frigs and went up against larger targets to see what they could do. Then got back into Cruisers. Take your time and fly the ships up through the ranks because you can appreciate the next class that you buy and have less likely chance of losing it. Good luck and keep playing, glad to have ya in game.

Thanks for the replies :)
I too do not know what tanking is.
I remember in my MUD days tanking was when one player took all the hits from the baddies. How do you do that?

tanking in EvE is generally reducing and repairing damage. You either shield tank or armor tank. Shield does it with extenders, boosters, and invulnerability fields. Armor does it with plates, hardeners, and armor repairers. Off topic, but you needed to know that its not tanking like most other mmos.

...Great Advice. I second it, and glad to have in the game as well.
