Hey kids. My corp mates and I have been mostly mission-focused until now, but we have decided to start doing some rat hunting in 0.0 space, mainly in the hopes of making decent money and hopefully finding some rare or faction loot. Before we commit ourselves to doing this, though, I was hoping some of the rat hunters our there could give me some insight into their experiences.
1. Is the loot/bounty worth it for the time spent, compared to mission running? What is the frequency of finding rare/valuable loot (like faction modules, implants, etc.)?
2. How dangerous is operating in 0.0 space? I'm not worried about NPCs, more other players. We don't have much interest in pvp, so if somebody comes gunning for us we will probably run for it. Are player pirates a constant threat?
3. Are supplies hard to come across in 0.0? Do NPC stations exist out on the rim? Should we bring some large secure containers and keep our ammo and loot in there, and only make resupply trips once in a while with an industrial?
4. Any other advice or wisdom you could share would be appreciated!
thanks in advance

1. Yes, it is worth it to rat in 0.0. Loot drops are good for getting the best named tech1 modules like Heavy Diminishing Nos or Large Modulated guns. Also, the bounties add up fast. I can usually make 15-30m an hour in bounties. As for officer loot, you can usually get one officer every week or two if you rat in a good area. Officer loot drop values can range from a Hundred Million to Several Billions.
2. Best thing to do is to group up with an established corp in 0.0 that way you will have some help if needed. If you are ratting alone always remember to keep your local chat screen up so you can see when someone enters into local. If someone enters the system that you do not know immediately dock. Never trust no one in local especially in 0.0. One thing to do when you find a good system to farm is to make an instas to a safe spot and a insta to station.
3. Stations in 0.0 have nothing listed by NPCs. Not even shuttles. Best thing to do is to get BPCs for every ship/module/weapon/ammo that you need and Dont need. Last thing you want happening is going all the way to 0.0 and then finding out that you have to fly back to empire to get more bpcs.
4. If someone in local says they found Chelms/Selynne or any other officer in a belt and need help killing it just ignore them. They are just waiting to pirate you. I personally never use any modules on my ship that I cant afford to lose, that way if I die it wont hurt as much.

Thanks for the reply. When you say we should hook up with a corp that is already established in 0.0 space, do you mean we should form a corporate alliance, or quit our current corp and join one that's already set up? We really don't want to disband the corp we have. Maybe we can find an alliance that would let us join in...

Just some more thoughts on the matter. I love 0.0 ratting (and I used to solo L4 missions). There is something about 0.0 space that keeps you on your toes and rewards you very well. Now down to the nitty gritty.
First I agree with the previous post on just about everything.
Second the region you choose will have a huge influnce on how you setup shop. For simplicity I'll just divide this into two scenarios based on distance from empire.
*If your planning on stopping at the first station you find in 0.0 (sometimes as few as 3 jumps in) there will be plenty of people passing through. Some will be hostile, most will just be neutrals passing through. But it makes watching local a pain with so many names and corps you dont know always popping in and out. On the bright side your close to resources (ammo and fresh ships) and close to a market to sell your named goodies.
*If you want to kick back and get liquered while you rat (which I do) head for the far reaches. Down side here is that stations are probably all player controlled which means if you arent on the list your not gonna get past the rope (no docking rights). Additionaly the same players that control the station usually dont like neutrals wandering around. The markets in these deeper places are thin, I suggest bringing BPCs or BPOs for ammo, maybe even a BPC or two for your ships. For t2, just bring what you want, you likely wont find a thriving t2 market in 0.0. Now for the good stuff, alot of the alliances that control deep 0.0 will sell (or grant) hunting or mining passes. This means the alliance puts your crew on the do not kill list and gives you docking rights. After this point watching local is more of a good policy than a critical issue as you will learn tha familiar faces and traffic is alot lower.
To summarize. Closer in=more people=watch your neck and better market. Deep 0.0 is safer but a potential pain for market issues. My choice was easy; get a pass and go deep the money is there to make it very worthwhile. Just be prepared to make your own ammo.
Oh and the money really is there-- busting an officer open for a cool bill in loot is pretty good. But you will lose ships along the way so leave the faction BSs safely at home.

It's worth noting that a lot of systems in deep 0.0 will hardly ever see anyone pass through them despite being claimed by big alliances.

How much cash would you suggest to have in reserve before you venture out to 0.0 to rat?
I didn't do it....I was mining. |

Can you 0.0 rat solo in a HAC or is the risk of losing it not worth it?
Also how much do these licences usually cost (ballpark)?
Thanks

as long as you got a solid fitting and are using the correct hac for the area your fine, and actually better off.
Sanshas Vaga,Munnin, and Ishtar work good here Bloods: Same as Sanshas Gursitas and Serps: Eagle, Cerberous, Ishtar, Deimos Angels: kinda hard to do in a HAC since the only thing that has good natural resists to what your going against can't deal the proper damamge. Prolly an Ishtar would be able to do it though with 2 exp hards and a kinetic

I do angels in a zealot just orbit the bses @ 5k using an ab(or not as I do), and they can't hit you. Start at biggest ship and work to lowest. Do not use a mwd.
Skidmark Smellybum > you shot him? Silas McQueen > yeah, mr Budz over there wasted us. Silas McQueen > we were feeling headstrong. |
