Two week old player here. Like many I was attracted to EVE by tales of huge fleet battles with thousands of pilots, where lasers and missiles fill the screen. So I joined up, then quickly realised there was not much to do without a gazillion SP. Am I right in saying that though? Do you need tons of SP to have fun? Because I have a retriever and mine with it, but that is getting dull. In about 2 hours I should be able to fit scourge missiles to my Drake and will be ready to do security missions with that, but I assume that will get dull as well. So what exciting things are there for a new player?
What I really want to is solo PvP (before eventually getting into fleet battles), sit silently in a system and wait for a weak target to fly by and then attack. So I am also wondering, can I do this in my Merlin? Do I need a cloaking device? They cost a crap ton for me. Also, I don't want to lower my security status so if I go into low sec will there be enough targets for me to shoot at without losing security status? Can anyone link me to a guide on how to prey on frigates in low sec? |

You can get in those giant battles right now. Those massive fleets need tackle pilots. It is a noob's job and a suicide mission but you can go today. Get on reddit and apply to TEST or get on something awful and apply to Goons.
They aren't the only large alliances in need of suicide tackle but they are in need of more than the others right now.
Our just go to low sec and get killed over and over until you start to kill people. Both options are fun and can be done on day 1.
Good luck & welcome to EVE! |

Alright, awesome. I shall make another character and apply for TEST. Want to stay in my mining corp for this money making character. Thanks :) |

This should be interesting....
TEST has retreated to lick their wounds after loosing some big fights. If this guy is not scammed for joining on day one. I will arc an eyebrow. "I saw him fight by the monument in Jita. -áHe flowed in his Machariel like a Shinto spirit, 800MM shells sprouting in his passing. -áHis hair flowed in the corona of his target's warp core breach. -áIt was truly majestic. -áAnd while everyone stared in awe I stole the loot and ran off.-áBecause I am like that." --áNEONOVUS |

There are many options out there, so I'd look into all of them before deciding, if I were you.
If you want to head to null, there are training corps for many of the large alliances that you should be able to get into, without too much trouble. However, be careful, because there are many scams out there as well.
You can look into corps like RvB (two corporations constantly at war, who organize many PvP events for their members and are newbie friendly) or Brave Newbies, who are an enthusiastic, if somewhat chaotic bunch.
There's also Faction Warfare (and many corps who do FW). It is also a decent way to make some ISK needed to replace all those lost ships, regardless of whether you choose to join a corp or not. |

Ehh.... Before you go and apply to TEST or GSF.... Note that there are many PVP oriented nullsec entities with low SP requirements, who want more frigate-buddies and EWar cruiser newbies.
Shop around a bit for a corp who does what you're interested in, and has the right social temperament for you. Utilize a bit of due diligence and patience here. Ask them what alliance they're in, and what coalition the alliance is in. Ask if they're involved in any hostilities at the moment, or on the horizon.
And as one of the aggressors against TEST, watching them fall flat with dysfunction, I would find it rather tragic to watch a new player skip merrily into their arms without a bit of consideration. Especially when there's so many effective, organized, drama-free, aggressive corps with a bright future around.
And a note of news: TEST is leaving null-sec, anyways. |

Those are all great points. Just because I the out a couple off big names didn't mean that they are your best options. Do some homework. Find a corp that fits what you want to do and has people that you want to fly with. The people that will be in your fleets are what really makes this game great, not missiles and lasers...although the missiles and lasers are pretty ******* cool. |

They train anyone in eve the basics of PVP and I believe corps do recruit from there.

I'm not sure TEST is a good idea to apply to right now. They were defeated in Fountain by Goonswarm recently. Even more recently they announced a surprise decision to abandon their null sec holdings in Delve as well, booting half their alliance members, and moving to low security space in the Aridia region.
I should know - I was trying to do exploration based in Aridia when the decision was announced yesterday morning. I had to pack up in a hurry and flee the region before I got trapped there. The place was crawling with TEST members.
Somehow, I don't think they're going to be doing as many large fleet battles in the future. |

Your best bet is to always look for a group of guys to grow with. Whether you are brand new or a crusty vet...it always comes down to the group you are playing with. You're Caldari right? The easiest role to get into in a fleet is to equip a Condor with a stasis web and warp scrambler and go out and try to lock down ships so they can't escape while your teammates kill them. Here's Eve University's article on the Condor - it includes several variations for fitting a Condor for tackling:
http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Condor
The article also links to an article on tackling here:
http://www.evealtruist.com/2012/08/newbie-tackling-guide.html
The Slasher, Atron, Condor, and Executioner are supposedly the dedicated tackling frigates. But you can probably use a Merlin, Rifter, Incursus, Punisher, or Tormentor.
So, if you're talking large fleet battles - that's probably your role to start with until you can train into something else. Caracals are really popular in large fleet battles right now - so you may want to set one of those as a long-term goal.
However... are you sure large fleet battles are the main thing you want to do? You asked how a newbie can have fun in this game. But large fleets aren't the only way to do that. I've been flying solo for the last month and having a blast. |

As for solo PvP, I've heard the best plan is to buy a stack of 20 cheap combat ships like the Condor or Merlin and blast off into low sec and try and lose them all in the most creative way possible. Make sure they're equipped with tackling equipment (see my post above), propulsion mods like afterburners or microwarp drives, protection mods and guns and go look for trouble.
You'll figure it out eventually that way. |

I want to make one more comment...While sober this time.
When I started I wanted to be in giant fleet battles too. As it turns out, flying alliance doctrine, following orders to the letter & 10% TiDi are not fun. I wholeheartedly suggest small gang pvp. Small corps need tackle too & there are a lot who are willing to teach you.
If you are worried about your sec status then join RvB or faction war otherwise just head on out to low sec and shoot stuff.
Edit: the post above me is good advice |

All my advice comes with the core premise of making friends and fleeting up. This is an MMO, playing it as one improves Eve massively. I pretty much only log in to fleet up and hang out with friends anymore.
Start off with piracy.
Pirates prefer small hulls which new players can train up very quickly, so you are on fairly even footing at least SP-wise with your peers. From there you'll learn that SP is about the least important thing when it comes to PvP. Pirate corps are newbie friendly, and you will be a real factor in their fleets, not just some throwaway tackler.
Another good option is sov null. Many corps have ship replacement programs if you lose a 'doctrine' ship (one that their fitting guys have cooked up). Train up Interdictors and any null sec alliance will be happy to have you, even if you never fly anything else in fleet. Other than Blops, virtually no fleet in null undocks without them- yet a new player can get into them pretty quickly. No other ship is so critical to so many fleets and yet so obtainable for new players.
The main keys to having fun in Eve is making friends, fleeting up, and not caring about internet spaceships. Regardless of what you actually do in the game- those three things will make Eve a fun game

Its way easier to do fleet PvP than it is to solo. I would suggest trying solo, and a Merlin is a great ship to try it in, but expect to lose a LOT of Merlins learning the ropes.
No you don't need a cloaking device. Go to lowsec (Black Rise is a good region to try, as is Heimatar.), make sure beacons are on your overview, and warp to the faction warfare complexes. You'll land on an acceleration gate. Open your dscan window, make the width 30 degrees on the slider, aim your camera down the gate, and scan. You'll get a list of ships in the complex, and you can then make an educated guess on if you'll win. If you want the fight, take the gate and fight. If not, warp off and try another system.
You could also try nullsec, but make sure to have a cheap clone with no implants because you will get podded frequently. Also UPDATE YOUR CLONE.
I'd suggest joining a newbie friendly corp like Eve-Uni or Brave Newbies Inc or Red vs Blue or Fweddit. I would hold off on joining a large scale sov alliance like TEST or Goons or Nulli until you have a better idea of what you want to do. Those organizations hate eachother, so becoming attached to one is more of a commitment than joining an apolitical newbie group. |

Why would you wish to join a game to blow stuff up then put all your training into mining and industry?? Something is amiss here. |
