Recently I made a thread asking what the fun things to do in EVE where, many people replied with factional warfare. I have looked into it and am very interested, I plan on making a new character and getting into a FW corp. I like the idea of flying stealthy ships which wait for weak targets and then pounce, although I am not sure if this is something needed in FW. So I ask, and I know it's a broad question, are covert ops and stealth bombers used widely in FW? If so, what ship should I train for? If not, what ships would be better? Also, any other general FW tips would be great  |

Wow, good question.
I tried FW once. I was interested in the 'orbital bombardment' so I studied that aspect.
I noted only 'small' weapons could be used in orbital bombardment, so I found a ship that could mount eight small weapons.
I found the Coercer and armed it with lasers and the 'tactical' crystals. I vistted the militia office and enlisted. I hurried to a nearby FW site and contacted the 'locals'. I told them I was fitted for orbital bombardment.
I was immediately told to follow two other destroyers to a planet needed such attention. I followed.
When we jumped into the target system, my escort vanished, but the enemy was waiting. Thus ended my only attempt at FW.

To your first question. Covert Ops ships are not widely used in FW. Many people have cloaked ships and use stabs ect. But a Covert Ops ship generally is used as a scout for roaming fleets and then generally in a neutral corps so as to not tip off the locals. Scouting for fleets takes a bit of practice and skill in the use of probes. Generally you find that only valued and trusted corps members do scouting. See the example below.
Fits are a dime a dozen, and frankly I would rather not turn this into a fit bashing thread.
Tips: Build your tank. Which translated mean build up as many Hip Points as possible. Take advantage of your races bonuses. Gallente ships have armor bonuses, Caldari Shield bonuses. Plan your skills accordingly.
Use programs like EFT and EveMon. If you want to know a good build, use the internet as resources. When you join a corps find a successful Pvper and use that build. Most if not all will be happy to explain it to you.
Look up. Dual Repped Incurus; Brawling Tristan; Kiting Tristan; PvP Atron -- Can be a brawler or kiter. You are on your own for Caldari. |

For mission running, Stealth Bombers are used fairly regularly in FW. Many FW missions involve killing a couple BS's inside a plex, and SB's provide fairly safe and easy travel to & from the mission site, as well as solid dps to kill the target.
For PvP, not so much. SB's have a hard time applying dps to frigates, and are generally low-tank ships themselves. Their damage bonus is only to torpedo's.
Covert Ops are used for scouting, and occasionally as a very unconventional attack vessel (see battle helios, buzzard, etc). They sport lots of mids for ewar, used to disable your target, but lack dps and tank making them more of a gimmick combat vessel than your standard frigate.

I've been experimenting in my corp and with my other mil mates with the concept of using SB's more frequently than we do or have seen them used. We're going to be attempting fleets of SB's with AC's fit that can sit, wait, and uncloak on unsuspecting squids. Hopefully we'll have a successful go at it.
What you want to keep in mind with Factional Warfare is that it isn't the place for mainstream nullsec mentality. Don't take fleet doctrine and standard combat practices with you into a complex.
Instead, have fun. Experiment. LOOSE SOME SHIPS JUST TO TRY SOMETHING NEW. I have had the most fun I've ever had in EVE just dorking around in lowsec running complexes in odd, strangely fitted ships doing things that would get me kicked out of any other fleet. And what do I have to loose? A 5m frigate? In FW you can make a good 250m an hour... what do I care?

It's very simple, really. If you see Tengus on scan, they are ratting. If you see a shitload of Tengus, the Russians are blobbing. If you see Proteuses on scan, they will be on top of you in about a second. If you see a shitload of Proteuses, the big boys are having a goodfight. |

As stated in previous posts, YES stealth bombers are extremely useful in Faction Warfare and FCs often request them in their fleets. They are also excellent lightweight assets for IHub attack fleets (the Infrastructure Hub is attacked in order to transfer control of a system to your faction when the system is vulnerable).
Try and get into a player corporation that has joined Faction Warfare - they are usually new-pilot friendly, can teach you the ropes, and offer more involved fleets than players in the NPC corporations.
T1 frigates are your best option most of the time. They are cheap, good PVP ships following the ship attribute overhauls. They can also access the "novice" complexes which are most frequently populated.
You'll figure it all out once you sign up for your faction. There are no secrets to it or specific ways - it's just a great way to learn PVP and make ISK. Have fun! |
