I just bought a millitary connections skillbook off of escrow for the nice price of 79 million isk. Or thats what i thought. Some smart-alleck made misuse of my inattentiveness and sold me a criminal connections skillbook for 79 million isk. Those are worth aout 180 thousand isk, not eighty million. Is this sort of scam an exploit? Griefing? Or is it just part of the game, akin to being ganked at the gate?
I can bear the loss, but DAMN what a way to start christmas day <<insert sig here>> |

Use the inspect merchandise & read carefully b4 you claim...
It's not an exploit, it's buyer beware...

They misrepresented the item with incorrect info, something you get banned (from eBay etc) or sued for in RL...

1. You can inspect escrows before buying them. 2. When you hit "Claim Escrow" you get a window to conform the transaction where the *true* item is listed.
It's like clicking yes at the warning message to enter Low Sec, its your choice.

part of the game inspect item/merch before you pick claim

I'm not saying it's not part of the game, but don't act like it's not a scam, because misrepresenting an item is a sacm... ------------------------------------------------ Current Hobby other than EVE |

Not saying the OP does, but a lot of ppl buy ISK with RL money and do stupid **** like this all the time because they did not play the game properly to earn it...
Others just make mistakes & want a rare item so badly and are afraid it won't stay up on escrow for very long so they read quickly & claim it... ------------------------------------------------ Current Hobby other than EVE |

Are allowed. You can do it in real life...you can do it in game.
Only difference, is that in-game, you ARE allowed to go kill them afterwards.

It's easy to work around it. The buyer could easily see what he bought...
If I offer you a cheap car and turn up with a shoebox, would you buy it and then complain?

I'd give you sympathy if I knew what to give you sympathy for? Yes, it sucks *******s and more that you lost that amount of money, but I can't pity someone who bought previous mentioned shoebox

The only exploit here is that the low life bottom feeders that do it hide behind alts.
Wouldnt be a problem if people did it with their main playing characters.

Nice caper. usually it's some idiot selling a piece of trit for 10 mill or something else that would never fly. It works both ways. I've bought stuff that obviously was underpriced because of a typo. Not really a scam but I wasn't about to go give it back.

To put it coarsely: Eve doesnt protect people from their own stupidity, if you fail to notice its not a Charon, but Carbon, it's you're fault. Ebay? You can put in a description that says gold watch, and put pictures of a gold watch, and send a lump of coal. Thats impossible in EVE. You can look at the item, know what it is, and decide on buying it or not from there.

There is nolonger such a thing as ESCROW scamming, now it's just the buyer being really stupid and not paying attention to what they're getting. You can see what's for sale before you buy it, and when you confirm it there's a list.
You ripped yourself off and made someone else's day. It sucks but it happens.

Sure, it's a scam. Many scams work within the boundries of the game's rules. ---- "Well in this case, he's being flamed, and rightly so, for whinning about a game mechanic that doesn't actually exist." -Lorth |
