In order to not cause this sort of situation again, I would humbly suggest the following:
Use the right tool for the job. If you are going to help someone or investigating exploits or whatever situation that involves going out in space to check it out, use an invincible ship, not the pretty vulnerable concord battleship.
Seriously, going out in a vulnerable ship is asking for people to shoot you just because they can. Telling people not to shoot you or face being banned, in a place not everyone reads it anyway, is like dropping a note in a birdhouse asking birds all over the world to stop chirping, or else!
I would not fire at a GM just as I would not fire at any innocent person, but I can certainly see where those that DO come from.
Feel free to lock this thread. If a GM read it, it served its purpose.

They shouldn't have to use the right tool.
As GM's they deserve our respect.

Well, if you look at it from moo's perspective, what have they done to earn said respect?

GM> Please, don't shoot. Moo shoots GM> Please, don't shoot. Moo shoots GM> Please, don't shoot. Moo shoots ... ... ...
This happens around 100 times. The GM says, finally please don't shoot or you will be banned.
Now you never will hear the end of it. give me a break.

While the word moderation is a hot topic around here right now, it seems some players could learn to use a little of it, restraint, and some common sense.
Who knows the delay caused by podding a GM? Perhaps it meant a couple of bugs didn't get looked at.

As was stated GMs have to do things in game. In general, to help.
Ok so the GM asks for him to cease fire.
He doesn't.
Here is the problem as I see it:
The GM is trying to make a better playing environment for it's customers. Said player is hindering this attempt even after he was asked to stop.
Using a sprinkle of logic here we can conclude:
Said player is NOT interested in a better playing environment and is what is commonly reffered to as a griefer.
Yes the GM could have had invuln on etc... to prevent this. However none of you out there KNOW for fact if the setup the GM was using was required for the situation.
A perfect analogy:
While playing paintball a ref often times has to go over to a player and check their gear, check for paint, check for injuries etc... Now in these cases the ref will usually stand between the two fighting players.
Now some would continue to shoot. The ref says cease fire and may blow a whistle to "pause" the game.
Now if a player were to continue firing after the ref said stop then that player would be removed and his team would have to suffer the consequences of losing 1 of their 5 man team. Yes the player may even be removed from the tourney etc...
So before the GM bashing goes on too far. Think of them as the ref of a game. Argue and you're ejected from the game.
NOW tell me you haven't seen players/coaches ejected from games for simply arguing with the ref.
The GM should have given him a 24 hour ban for this offense nothing less.

why is this the only MMO where you can actually kill a GM? This lesson was learned a long time ago. If you don't want something killed in the game you make it invunerable.

Edited by: Klydor on 18/08/2003 21:24:52 I've no problem with never shooting at a gm again, so long as:
The gm's never get involved in rp engagments when having the gm tag
If a GM is to partake in an RP encounter do so with an alt with a name that makes sense rp wise.
finally where possible, fly in an invulnerable ship. Do not carry items unless you need to.
Thats all I ask.
Make a rule about NOBODY to shoot or interfer with GM's if they are in the game and post it via the IN GAME NEWS so that everybody reads it, not just the forum adicts.

Lol, well by the same token, why should I arbitrarily hand out respect to some geek because he has a "GM" in his name? Look, we pay to play. We are the customer. Period. This isnt kindergarten, this is business to them (or at least should be).

Wasn't RP'ing - he was investigating an exploit.
Ywev was warned more than once.
It says something that a GM may be forced to rely on being invulnerable rather than relying on the intelligence of the players.

You don't HAVE to respect him. But you had better damn well do what he tells you to or you get thrown out of the game.
GM in the name is the online equivalent of black and white striped shirt. You may hate his guts but when he says foul, just stfu and do as he asks. That's all nothing more complicated than that.
No he shouldn't HAVE to fly in an invuln ship no more than a ref needs to wear body armor.
If you want to play the game obey the GMs ruling on the field. If not then get the hell out.

Its simple enough, a GM has a different colour text, a GM has GM before the name.
If such a GM ask you to stop shooting you do, if you dont face the music.
If I was said GM I would simply dest the offenders ship, Im sure they have commands to dest target ship, it would be silly not to.
Offender looses ship and modules, punishment enough in my opinion plus the offender would not come back for more.

Just because you pay for this service doesn't mean you can run around doing whatever you want. If you are being told not to shoot them GM's or be banned then don't shoot the GM's stupid. I don't support the theory that the customer is always right, even the paying ones.
I do think they should make the GM's invulnerable and avoid themselves all this grief from people who have nothing better to do than start trouble. I do think if a GM is trying to help a player and the GM is being griefed by another player, he/she should get a warning, temporary ban, or perm ban depending on the severity of the actions. Players who interfere with GM's duties should be punished and sent to EVE jail just like they used to do back in UO. They should lock you up in a black hole for a few to see how you feel about getting your gameplay interfeared with.
Have you people never learned to never mess with GM's? The worst thing to have is a ****ed off geek with the power to mess you up.

GMs do not have to, and probably won't, be using God mode simply because, either way, they'd get *****ed at.
"OMFG that GM was in god mode1 LAME21"
"I CANT grief that GM WTF?!"
etc....
We should feel honoured that the GMs don't use God mode, shows that they have a certain level of trust towards as (Although there will always be prats that abuse this trust).
Likewise, I have yet to see a single decent reason, justification or excuse for killing a GM other than "THEY DIDNT NOT HAVE GOD MODE ON11".

No they are naive. I'm not so sure we should be honored. Perhaps curious as to why they would choose to be in the game in a mode where they can be killed.

Your right, but also hit the nail on the head. It is done simply because it can be done. Make gm's invunerable and the problem stops.

To me it seems pretty simple. The GMs need to inform the players how to identify when a GM is on official business and should not be interfered with. This means that they should use their GM acounts only for official out-of-game stuff and not for role playing. My suggestion would be to evemail it to all the players.
On the other hand the players need to use their common sense. Personally it would never cross my mind to fire at a GM. If a player accidently shoots a GM, he/she should get a warning. If the player ignores the warning then the GM can punish the offender accordingly.
As long as the rules are reasonable and clearly communicated to the playes, the players should be required to follow them.
As far as the GM ships not being invulnerable, it would sure make things simpler but there might be avalid reason why it can't be used all the time. Also any player complaining about GMs having invulnerable ships when on oficial business is an idiot.

Hehe I'm pretty sure that GM after his screen load did see only cloning facility.
As usual he get toasted by game engine before he can react. So he as GM shouldn't be able warn MOO member not to shoot. GM got no chance to defend, may be CCP finaly decide to increase ship hitpoints?
I'm looking in at bright side. This little incident show how ships are fragile and guns doing overhelming damage on ships even BS.
Heads up!

i find it in pure stupidity that GMs have vulnerable ships... If they need to do GM duties then they arn't going to be playing the game because they will be fixing the problem in real life.
if the GMs are having trouble then need to talk to CCP to code them a invulenrable ship to test bugs, and when they wish to return to normal gameplay they use a diff ship...

Nevermind that usually reflex takes over - for example with cans: "heavy modulated, extruded 2,..crap again..activating weapons...er..ARGH"
Should be pretty much the same with a pirate camping a gate; targeting, shooting first, thinking later. When he sees it's a GM he's just shooting it's usually too late exept the GM's ship has a LOT of hits.

Hmmmm, yup. Seems like moo is playing the game the way it was meant to be played. You can't honestly sit there and tell me you DIDN'T KNOW what kind of a corp moo was. And I can't believe you let your corp newb enter a moo blockade alone to get blasted.
I don't know about your corp but all our newbs are taught how to avoid moo and it's pathetically easy to do. Hell, we even provide the bookmarks. It's a VERY rare occasion that someone from moo gets a Space Wolf and as far as I know it's only happened twice. We learned and adapted.
Evasion in this game is the simplest aspect to grasp. Frankly I'm surprised moo does so well but I guess there are a lot of stoopid people still out there. But anyway, don't change the subject, the GM went to a moo blockade in a non-invulnerable ship. What the hell did he expect?

Well, I don't know about what the GM was going to test or what petition he was responding to but I can surely imagine that there are tasks where it is NECESSARY not to have an invulnerable ship or any code-wise modifications on it because it simply could change the effects of the game environment on said ship, hence making it impossible to reproduce the problem the petition was about.
So I would simply say that GMs, when they are 'on-duty', meaning the are responding to and investigating petitions and the like, use the 'GM' in front of their character name and not if theyare taking part in the game (don't even know if theywould have time for really playing regarding the huge amount of petitions they must have lying on their desks). And for all the players... for christs sake... there sure is enough to shoot up in EVE so leave the GMs to do their work. Petitions already take long enough, just check all the threads with ppl moaning about that they are waiting 2 hours alreadyto get 'unstuck' (just naming one of the topics here). When you see 'GM' in front of a name and colored chat text, then do what they ask you to do and STOP SHOOTING. Just because they are not in an invulnerable ship and most likely not handling your petition (if you ever file one) at the moment, doesn't mean they are free game.
So much to my thoughts on it

The answer's simple.
Don't go in a ship. I'm sure the Devs can code up an invisible state for the GMs. After all if there sent to investigate an exploit what's the point of being visible? ----------------------------------------- Don't jump off the roof dad. You'll make a hole in the yard. ----------------------------------------- |

If he don't stop shooting after getting multiple warnings i would suggest that the GM simply destroy this players ship. ( Hope they have the /kill command. )
In real life a psycho that don't react to words needs to be shoot too.
I agree that CCP need to tell their GMs that they don't interact with the players in any way if they use their GM-Egos and if they want to run a RP-Session they need to use Alter-Egos without a GM in the name because it wouldn't be nice if you ignore a GM-Ship and it suddenly shoot your back for RP-reasons.
That you can do something doesn't mean you have the right to do so and if you think i pay 13 bucks a month so i can kill anything that move.. go get to a doctor...
