well you could say that the gravity of the planet jumps you past it when you're at extreme (warp) speeds

This echoes a tad on the light speed discussion... Well if you travel at warp, the space is folded so you technically dont travel through the planet. You travel over it... Or under it... Or something. I need sleep.

CCP actually answered this during alpha.
If I remember correctly, they described the reason why while warping you go through planets or any other celestial object being that how the intrasystem warp system works is that you go into a sort of 'hyperspace' because when all the energy around the ship is depleted(which creates the warp state), you are no longer in normal space, thus, you can pass through objects that are in normal space.
Well, it was something like that, but I don't think they ever answered why camera drones and go through stations. _______________________________________________ E&B producer Eric Wang being owned by Reynir Hararson: Reynir: "See? oo i know
camera drones are in a perminate quazi phazed state ie this is why they are not picked up by sensors and are alowed to pass through objects?

Edited by: Gaijin Lanis on 30/09/2003 06:49:05 camera drones exsist in hyper-space. this has several advantages... stray shots can't take them out, targeted shots can't take them out, splash damage can't take them out... nothing can take them out, the disadvantage to this is the fact that they cannot have any direct effect upon matter that is not in their hyperspace bubble, with this, not even other cam-drones can touch them. this method is not considered for use as a defensive system because of the ammount of energy required to create a hyperspace bubble, if not dissipated, would destroy all matter within the hyperspace bubble upon it's collapse unless the energy is probally disipated, also the reason the minimum warp distance is 150km... weeee

You go through planets because your warp drive creates a wormhole thats what the tube thing is when your in warp its like going through a stargate.

Edited by: Kini'na on 17/10/2003 01:28:09 Must have something to do with sub-space and matter displacement. What's there when you're warping is more like a residual image of the ship, when it's in "reality" locked in a sub-space field generated by the warpdrive. Hence the refracting cone around your ship during warp.
Ahh.. it's just a theory!

I know everyone's going on about the scientific explanations of warping, but lets be honest now! You warp through planets because the collision detection in eve is particularly poor atm, probably because the auto-pathfinding doesn't concern itself with objects, which I imagine is done that way to reduce network traffic, but I could be wrong...
Hopefully in the near future they'll implement an inteligent course plotter that avoids going through things, so if a stargate is on the otherside side of a planet it will take 2 warps to get there, once to avoid the planet and once to get to the stargate.

Somewhere in the EVE help files it says the engines are powered by negative energy.
Well, a theory put out by some physicist says that if you put a whole lot of negative energy (an energy vacuum, if you will) in front of you, and a whole lot of positive energy behind you, the space will be deformed in such a way in front and behind you as to propel you to (as far as you can tell from inside the ship) faster than light speeds.
The physicist I read this about says that the actual effects of going through an object are unknown and not easy to predict, but that it was safe to say it would be pretty screwed up, and the ship as well.
Gaijin Lanus: You say that nothing can affect camera drones because they exist in hyperspace. If that's true, then how does light from their surroundings interact with the camera to produce an image? Should lasers be able to damage them, then? And not just lasers, matter would be able to interact with it, as well. Duh, common sense here. :P
And, finally, here's why I think ships can go through planets: It's a game. :)

Actually, i read in the DB that the cameradrones are so cheap and small and really easy to eject, that even if it would be hit by a stray shot, a new one would be out so fast that you would not notice the difference. And because they are so small and cheap, a standard frigate carries several thousand of them, mainly because they are cheaper to replace than fix... No Wormholes, your ship is moving FTL, so obviously your ship does what is known as "Quantum Tunneling" when you collide with a massive object. The perfect vacuum held around your ship to create the warp field keeps anything small from hitting your ship.
As for camera drones... They are out of phase... or something...

None of you have answered how it can be that:
1. I can sometimes (almost always) go through my corpmates ships
2. I can mine THROUGH an asteroid, mining another one behind it
3. Asteroids can hide within other asteroids, and so can ships
4. The star far away in the background is always in front of the ship (foreground) if you try to "hide" the star by changing view so that your ship is in front of the star
In my opinion, these are all non-fatal but still a bit annoying bugs...

You know I was playing D&D and my friend had a dryder do a sumersault with me on it's back and squash me.. now the physics on that are a little sketchy.. but this is the reason I got out of him.. "It's a game and I'm the storyteller".. and effictivly when ships hit 2au/sec (~879+ * the speed of light) the fact that the camera drone still can pick up images since light isn't traveling fast enough from a star to register.. almost your entire view should go black anyway.. However since it does appear that some kind of space/time tunneling is used techincally your ship does not exist on the same plane as any other celestial object.. in all essence it doesn't exist.. as for mining lasers going through asteroids and mining other asteriods, can someone please tell me how a laser manages to carve off a chunk of rock and put it in my cargo hold? if it uses some kinda tractor beam why don't we have bigger ones?

Here's a little theory for you.
You can breathe air, move through air. This is due to the fact that the atmosphere is made of very light atoms, compared to our body makeup.
When something feels solid, its because its atoms are packed dense enough to physically hit the atoms you consist of.
However, each atom is made from a core, with electrons buzzing all around it at incredible speeds. So the actual space taken up by a single atom is much less than the space it feels solid in.
As you approach the speed of light, the electrons slows down relative to you. When you pass the speed of light they might aswell be teeny tiny specs of dust hanging still in space.
Now, the atoms of the planet are frozen still, relative to us, so now thay take up only like 1/1.000.000.000 or less of the space they would usually occupy.
This allows the ship and our body to pass through the solid object unharmed. As the atoms of the item is standing perfectly still, our own moving atoms will have a very very slim chance of actually colliding with the atoms of the solid object. - Thus giving the effect of being able to warp through planets at greater than lightspeed.
Sheesh - Haven't you heard of phasing? - Switching out of phase with the world, allowing you to pass through objects as your atoms no longer occupy the same space, but bypasses existing matter by moving individual molecules at incredible speeds.
Fictional characters doing this are among others Kitty Pryde (X-Men) and the Flash. Also some more serious stuff on the subject is to be found around the internet. - In theory its possible, if you could map the movement of all the molecules involved, and then direct them to not collide. There's plenty of space to do it, but since both molecules move about, they hit eachother with certaincy, if one portion of the molecules stood still, the other part could move through them more easily.
And as you move faster, compared to the surroundings, the surroundings might aswell be standing still, thus creating the room between molecules you need to slip through the object.

Sorry to break it to you but you are all wrong...
Its actually because the planets are not there, they are infact for navigational purposes. When our ancestors came through into eve they noticed this and felt homesick. So they made navigational bouys which projected the image of a planet around itself. The bouy is about 1 metre cubed so hard to hit. Thats why you can never land on a planet in eve, it was just put there as a point to anchor the stations to. Also the stories you hear about the people on the planets are all lies too. Thats why the planets create no demand and you can not see any civilisation on them.
There was an instance 200 years ago when the bouy projecting new caldari ran out of batteries and the planet dissapeared till they got an engineer out to it. Luckily no one noticed. Ok i have to hide now because the men in black will be after me if they find out i have let the secret out!!!!!

Thats not true. your screen should go blue(or red cant remember which) due to the doppler effect. As you are traveling along there is light that is already comming towards you and as you approach it the wavelength is squashed giving a altered color. This is how scientists tell if a star is moving towards or away from us and at what speed.

Next time your warping take a look at the colour of the 'tunnel' your in. You'll notice it has a blue tint in front of you and a red tint behind you. The Doppler Effect is there. Everytime I close the door on reality it comes in through the window. |

I love discussions like this :)
I always assumed that it was just because when your ship warps, to go faster than the speed of light it sort of creates a bubble of energy around itself and phases out of normal space, so normal physics dont apply etc, therefore it cant hit anything in normal space
(I know its just a bug or a way to keep the gmae engine running fast but a little tech debate is interesting)
Keep this up

True that you'll get blueshift in front, redshift behind. I can't be bothered to dig up the formulae, but I'm sure that going 3 au/s would give so much shift that the light in front would be shifted beyong ultraviolet, behind beyong infrared, thus making all but a ring around your middle invisible.
Simple answer; your camera drone 'sees' this light, and decodes it back to normal for you.

The whole concept of going warp speed is silly, and reckless. You cannot control yourself when you are travelling that fast, if you could do it.
Imagine you're driving 20 miles an hour down a deserted road, and a deer darts out in front of your automobile. Not the end of the world, probably.
Now imagine you are travelling at 200 miles an hour down that same stretch of road, and the deer darts out in front of you. Splat. Deer dies, your car dies.
In space, planets are not the most worrisome objects. More problematic are little bits of debris, tiny little meteors and the such that you cannot begin to pick up on a scanner or plot around. Imagine the processing power and scanner power needed to scan ahead of yourself some several hundred au, then analyze the trajectory of any objects in a large radius, then compute all that, and give you a safe route.
It ain't gonna happen. So accept that this is a game, and the graphics are about as realistic as they can come.
Because my guess is that if this was real, you wouldn't be allowed to run at warp speeds anyway, or you'd lose your Apoc to a stray meteor that your scanners didn't pick up. And wouldn't that suck?
So better to warp through planets, IMHO, then to have to impulse everywhere. You think travel in EVE is slow now... haha.

dont forget hyperspace travel is via wormholes so you fly down one to reach the station in reality you are not moving that fast the wormhole is the speed indicator is there to show youare moving you can still see stuf like passing planets suns dustclouds because intersystem warp travel is weaker that intersteller travel so you are still partially in the eve universe but when you travel to another system you dont see anything because you are fully out of the universe and therre foreyour camera drones are brought in as full warp travel is more turbulant

Edited by: Burga Galti on 15/01/2004 20:56:41 In response to Ilia, Travelling 3.0au/s is the same as 4.5E11 m/s. That would give you a shift to X-rays rather as blue infront of you and an extremly low frequency radio wave instead of red light behind. Decoding would solve that but warping between planets should give you major cancer problems! Oh, and Ishkur, it's already established that we are going through matter so the deer would be fine and so would the car.
