I have recently returned to Eve after a 6 month break, before I left I specalized in mining.
I worked my way up to mining 4/Astrogeology 4 and used a Brutix.
Now that I am back (and realized that after RMR I would need alot more skills and a BS to do lvl 3 missions) I am mining agian.
I realized that I am pretty darn close to using a Med Barge and began training my Industry skill up to lvl 5.
Today, once I found a suitible system to mine in (a little harder now that there are 12k ppl online when I play where as before there was around 5k) I found that I get 86.4 units per cycle, or with all 7 Miner 2's running, 1008 units of Omber per cycle.
When I looked at the stats on the 2 strip miners I could fit it does not seem like I will be getting much more ore per cycle with a Med Barge, plus I will alot less safe in the barge when compared to my Brutix (I mine in .5 space)
So, my question is, is it worth it to go for a Med barge?

Statistically No it would not be worth it to go for a med Bardge.....I would make the third bardge or exhumer my main focus if you were to b a miner........But you are right the brutix will pull more ore in, in a short period of time as compared to the med bardge.

Middle barge with Modulated Strip Miners II mine more than 7 Mining laser II (on Brutix or Megathron)
Middle drones in bay will enough for defence in 0.5

Unless you invest in t2 modulated strip miners Brutix mines faster than med barge and you are also much safer. On the other hand mining with barge is more comfortable due to bigger cargobay, longer range and cycle time.
With Brutix you have to move the minerals every minute from cargobay to can.

You can do lvl 3 missions with your Brutix. I do.

Unfortunitly my combat skills have been neglected since I started playing (focused mainly on learning/mining).
I was able to do a few lvl 3 missions (qual 0) but when I warped into a deadspace mission and was down to 50% armor before I was even aligned to warp out I got a little scared.
At that point I decdied to mine while training all the relevant combat/BS/tanking skills.
Oh, and I doubt I will be putting 2 18 mil isk Strip miner 2's on a barge, so I think I will stick with the Brutix.
