I have a question about this skill. Since I have maxed out all of my mining/refining skills (second level processing to lvl 3 for all ores), I figured I would work on the scrap metal processing skill too.
Well I have the skill and have trained it to lvl 3.
Yet when I right click on the stack of scrap metal I have in my hanger I do not get the option of refining. It also does not show up in the reprocessing window either?
Is there some thing I am missing, is the skill broken, what?
I am currently trying to refine/reprocess 100 units of the stuff. I would think if it was not enough I would get a dialog that told me I needed xxx units to refine/reprocess.

Scrap Metal processing works on the reprocessing of looted mod's not on the item 'Scrap Metal'. Its like the specialty ore processing skills, excepts its for reprocessing mods.

Well silly me for thinking that the skill labled 'Scrapmetal Processing' would be used for that.

Not sure but I've only encountered "Scrap Metal" as a hauling quest item. Kinda like Giant Sealed Cargo Containers. Might be why you can't refine them?

You can also get it as loot from destroyed structures. But it appears its only use is as a trade good.

if you are refining a lot of crap loot for you or your corp i permit myself to suggest you invest your training time in learning it up to 5 (its like the ref. eff. 5, you get a 0 wasted mins)

With Refinery and Refinery Efficiency at 5 u only need any processing skill at 1 for 0 unrecoverable mins
So lvl 5 Scrap metal processing would be a waste of learning time.

Whilst this is true it only holds if you are using a station with a 50% base refine, if for whatever reason you have to use a station with a lower refine then higher levels would be worthwile, however iirc even at lvl5 you won't get to 0 waste at a 30% station.

Actually, in the case of Scrap Metal Processing, this is not true.
For minerals, this is the case, so the processing skills are mostly for using Outpost or POS refining arrays.
But I am 99.9% sure that I get more minerals with scrap 5 from reprocessing junk mods than I did when I had it at 1. I'll test it tonight if I'm not beaten to it.

I had been told that the regular skills don't work on scrapmetal-class items. so you might be Refining 5 Refining Efficiency 5 and still be bad at melting down modules without the scrapmetal skill. Otherwise why grind through 10 levels of refining just to be able to open the book?

I believe even at a 50% refine station you do need the specialist skill (including for scrap metal processing) to get a perfect refine, you do however only need 1 level in it. It just so happens that I refined a little loot last night at a 50% station which I have >7 standing with, I have both refining skills at 5 and scrapmetal only at lvl1 at the time and got a perfect refine on the loot.
So if you are using 50% stations there is no point having it above lvl1, obviously for lower level stations the extra levels will be worthwile.

I get 99.5% efficiency when I refine modules and drone loot with Refining 5 and RE 5 but no scrapmetal skill. So the regular skills do work, but to get a perfect refine you'll need the scrap skill. That's the same as happens with ore - you need the specialist skill to hit 100%, even in a refinery with 50% base.

than xfor this post mna .. you ve made me save time .. i was currently trainning to fly a freighter around and pick up those blown up pos scrap metal pieces to refine and get uber mins ..
