I have only been playing a few days, but I see a lot of references to 'cans'. What are cans?
Also, I see there are tons of different minerals to be mined. Is there advantages/trade-offs to choosing one over the other?
Many thanks for the help. :)

Scordite is the one you want to mine in high security. Can are just a storage ..well..can.
You can buy a can and jettison it in space, so you wont have to run to your station every time your cargo is full, instead you put it in your can.
To anchor can in space you need a skill though.
Hope it helped

Canisters.
There's two main kinds, which come in a Small, Medium, and Large, and those are Standard, which anyone can open (but get the thief flag for stealing), and Secure, which require a password, or some fancy-shmancy Electronic Warfare-style hacking, to open.
Miners use these so that they can dump huge quantities of minerals into them, then either retrieve them themselves with their own freight, or their corp members can show up with the freighter and ship the minerals back and forth to their target area.
They occasionally refer to Cargo Containers, which are the "po' man's cans", if you will. ;)
Me.

Thanks for the quick replies.
Questions: how common is it to use a can? Why would someone store ore in a can rather than haul it away, unless you are just leaving it for someone else to pick up.. Is that the only reason?
Also, what if a can is not tethered.. Will it just drift through space randomly? Will it stay in the same system?
Thanks again.

If you haul ore every time ure ship is full - ya waste too much time hauling.
If you are mining in secure space, mine some and then jettison ure cargo into space. Set name of the cargo container to the GMT u see at the bottom left hand side of the screen. (Cargo containers will spontaneously blow up after around an hour.)
So mine and then transfer ure ore into the container... rinse and repeat for like 45 minutes then go get ure hauler and haul it home all at once. If you don't have one, have a friend help. If you don't have a friend or a hauler, you are wasting ure time!

With my setup I use 2 cans (Giant Cargo Container) and I fill them up with my frigate (Bantam) because i can equip two mining turrets on it and it is faster. Once i fill the cans up i change out my ship to my industrial ship (Badger Mark II) and come back and pick up the loot in the cans. You'll find you save a lot of time doing it this way.
