Strip Miner II
Fixin' to get my Retriever in a few days. Looking at the Strip Miner and the Strip Miner II versions, what does it mean by "speciality crystal mining amount"? Does that mean if I'm mining something as "ordinary" as Plagioclase I'll get something "extra" either in ore form or in refined form?
Still getting my feet wet, and am not yet in a finacial position to afford the risk v. reward factor of 0.0 space for the more "exotic" ores, nor do I have a pass yet so trying to figure out if I'd be better off getting the Tech I versions since the seem to have a higher base yield.
Thanks in advance.

Modulated 'miners' use 'MINING CRYSTALS' which get damaged as u use them. Think of them as ammo for the Mining lasers. Each type of crystal enhances the amount of ore you take in.
STRIP MINER Is by themselves take at basic level 580 ore pieces a cycl,e MOD-Strip miner IIs take in 360 ore pieces in, but with mining crystals this is enhanced.

Ahh, so the modulated would get 360 of ANY ore and an additional 360 of whatever type of mining crystal one fits if mining that type of ore. Thanks for the clarification.
Follow up question, how long do the mining crystals typically last, and are there T2 versions of the crystals out yet?

No
The description is somewhat vague.
WITHOUT a crystal you get x amount.
WITH a crystal you get the same x amount, but with a modifier of 1.625 or 1.75 depending on T1 or T2 crystal, but ONLY for the ore you have the crystal for.
you do NOT get that x amount twice.
it fooled me too, but i checked and this is how it works

So a strip miner I gives 580 ore units, and
a modulated strip miner II gives 360, with a crystal of 1.625 would it give 360 + 360*1.625 = 945 ore units?
or would it just be 360*1.625 = 585 ore units?
I cant justify giving 11 mil for 5 more ore units...
if my calculations are completly off(which they normally are) plz help me understand

Where is the 1.65 or 1.75 number?

The above is from the Mod Stripper II.
How about I ask this another way, can a retriever at "base" skills with a Modulated Stripper II out mine an Osprey with 3 Miner II's with the same skill set?
Only two ways to go; living fast or dying slow. |

I dunno about the exact numbers but mine are as follows:
stripminer I: aprox 950m3 per cycle StripminerII with T1 crystals: aprox 1050m3 per cycle StripminerII with T2 crystals: aprox 1100m3 per cycle
this is without counting the new mining module!!!
Anways if u look at the above u might think, whoot, lets go for T2 crystals, and yes i used to as well, but now ccp nerfed em so they break within a few hours of use i've switched back to T1 crystals, they last a lot longer (actually i have yet to have one break )

It is with the crystals. Link |

Edited by: Kery Nysell on 02/01/2006 16:35:44 Well, there's a type of laser than you can fit on the Osprey, with a bit more skills (Modulated Deep Core Miner IIs), and in those you can use the same crystals as in the Modulated Strip Miners ...
You need Mining 5 and Astrogeology 5 to learn the Deep Core Mining skill, and 2 in that skill to fit the MDCM IIs, and then the same set of Processing skills for the crystals.
With those lasers, the bare reqs and T2 crystals, I get 328.125m¦/3 mins per laser without a mining mod (and 344.53125m¦/3 mins with just one), but I mine in an Apoc(boo-hiss-shame-blabla) ...
On an Osprey with Cruiser 4 and 3 MDCM IIs + T2 crystals, that would make [(328.125mx1.8)x3] = 1771.875m¦ every 3 minutes. And with Cruiser 5 that would do [(328.125x2)x3] = 1968.75 m¦/3 mins ...
The Osprey still won't outmine the barge, but it's close ... by the way, on my apoc with 8 MDCM IIs, T2 crystals and a mining mod, I can get 2756.25m¦/3 mins, and I spent less time raising the Amarr BS skills (Frig 4, Cruiser 4, BS 2) than I still need for Cal Cruiser 4 => 5 ...

if you want to get all technical you cant beat a barge at all for mining...
the new T2 mining barge a Skiff would be...
250 (MDCSM II laser) * 1,25 (Mining V) * 1,15 (Mining Barge V) * 1,25 (Astrogeology V) * 1,75 (Tech II Crystal) = 786.13
1.7 (w/ Exhumer I) = 1336.421m¦/3 mins w/o mining mod 2.4 (w/ Exhumer II) = 1886.712m¦/3 mins w/o a mining mod 3.1 (w/ Exhumer III) = 2437.003m¦/3 mins w/o a mining mod 3.8 (w/ Exhumer IV) = 3144.52m¦/3 mins w/o a mining mod 4.5 (w/ Exhumer V) = 3930.65m¦/3 mins w/o a mining mod
and you can put 2 mining laser upgrade I for +10% giving you a total of 4323.715m¦/3 mins with exhumer V
then for base minerals use a hulk and you got
360 (MDCSM II laser) * 1,25 (Mining V) * 1,15 (Mining Barge V) * 1,25 (Astrogeology V) * 1,75 (Tech II Crystal) * 3 = 3396.09
1.03 (w/ Exhumer I) = 3497.9727m¦/3 mins per laser w/o mining mod 1.06 (w/ Exhumer II) = 3599.8554m¦/3 mins per laser w/o a mining mod 1.09 (w/ Exhumer III) = 3701.7381m¦/3 mins per laser w/o a mining mod 1.12 (w/ Exhumer IV) = 3803.6208m¦/3 mins per laser w/o a mining mod 1.15 (w/ Exhumer V) = 3905.5035m¦/3 mins per laser w/o a mining mod
and you can put 2 mining laser upgrade I for +10% giving you a total of 4296.053m¦/3 mins with exhumer V
