There are five general sub-capital classes: frigates, destroyers, cruisers, battlecruisers, battleships. For each race, you need to start with its frigate class and train to Level III, which will unlock the next-larger class of ships.
But going to a larger class isn't quite the same as "leveling up" would be in other games. There are things a frigate can do that a battleship can't; specialized roles within ship classes; and support skills that are needed to get the most out of any ship. Given the right circumstances, three frigates can slaughter a battleship. Aside from studying Marc Callan's answer, you need to slow down and spend some time in frigates and destroyers while you train support skills before moving on to cruisers.
The way that skill training works was explained thoroughly in the tutorial. I know that it's a lot to take in for someone brand-new. If you need to refresh your memory, you can go to any other starting area (even for another race) and do them over again in whole or in part, and get free ships and skillbooks.

Always check the information and skill requirements on anything you come across. It will provide you with a wealth of information. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

Not being trying to be an arse and I in no way think of myself as a pro, just calling it as I see it.
The forum is not for hand holding (find a good corp for that), even though some were nice enough not to troll you.
Come here after you have exhausted in game and external (read google) resources looking for information and still do not understand. Show some initiative and people will be much more willing to help. Explain what you have figured out and what you still don't understand.
You should heed the advice about sticking with frigs while you train vital support and gunnery skills, I rushed into larger ships I shouldn't have been flying and wish I didn't as I learned the hard way a few times. |

OP, just so you know that this forum is an equal oppertunity place to come....
.... you will see quotes like the above. That while trying to make sense cannot due to a lack of understanding of any language, regardless english.
I think what he meant to say is "cant even be ASKED to learn how to play it", I think. However at being stumped on how to drop an F-bomb (eve forum style) he chose to drop it awakardly into the sentence in this way.
Which rendered the sentence completely useless.
Anyhow, as noted, you just need to look over the ship classes and train accordingly. Download "EveMon" as it will help you structure your training plans. Stick with Frigs and dessies for a while. |

its called slang, Captain Dictionary. The syntax of my sentence is totally correct... and its not really my fault if you have no experience with British English :)
"i cant be bothered to get up today" = "i cant be f@cked to get up today"
its a ridiculously simple concept, but please take your time with it hahaha |

OP, then you get to have your post blown all to hell with people like us who can't leave anything alone, especially when its to call someone out for their "cool" use of "current" Urban Dictionary slang which, you will find, oddly enough ends up being derived from someone mistyping something, but to cover that they put it into Urban Dictionary then every body else wants to be cool and use the original idiocracy.

um first of all: grow up
once youve done that just google the expression, you might learn something about British culture. its slang thats been in use for well over 50 years.
im guessing you are just butt hurt over being a little slow. its ok man, did you also wonder how to "make yer ship bigga?" before this thread? now you know!
as a side note: just because people have been mean to you on the forum before doesnt mean youve gotta walk around with a chip on your shoulder. let it go man, so youve asked some dumb questions and took some abuse for it. big deal. learn your lesson and move on cause your starting to sound about done. |

As for the OP, an important question to ask is: What do you want to do?
That answer will help determine how/when/why you skill up for a bigger ship (and help others to provide better advice with context.) As others have stated, bigger ships aren't necessarily better in EVE.
