Hi,
I consider myself a fairly adept scanning and things have obviously imrpoved with the changes too.
But I have gotten a little lazy and tend to use the games' chosen formation. I didnt realise but I have just read that I can actualy save my own formation and use that.
I can use 8 probes, but have historically ran with 7 and tended to set up in the following manner. (using compass and up/down).
North
East
South
West
Central
Up
Down
HOwever the games' formation tends to not use this, thus I was wondering what the best formation is or if there is very little in it?!?

You cannot save formation till Odissey 1.1 comes out.
That said, I don't think the in game formations are bad. The spread formation maybe needs to be changed a bit, but the pinpointing one - maybe just bring the top and bottom probes a little bit closer to center.
In regards to your formation - that's what I was running before Odissey, but with a little modification - I was using 8-th probe also in the center, but made it a smaller sphere by 1 step (for example, your 7 probes are at 2AU, then the 8th probe is at 1AU). |

You probably read that in this devblog which indeed is about Odyssey 1.1. So you'll have to wait a bit before you can save your own formation.
I used to have the same formation but, like Archa4 Badasaz, with an 8th probe in the center at 1 iteration smaller than the other ones. I don't think the formation offered by CCP is bad but there were some things about my formation which I got used to so much, that I've been missing that quite a lot since Odyssey (like having the green lines in a cross for a faster and more accurate displacement of the probes after each scan).
About the spread formation, I rarely use that actually since the pinpointing formation is usually big enough to show everything in a system.

i will also try 8 probes in the same position (probably combat probes for greater range) to emulate a deep space probe, so i can identify the signatures by signal strength again |

Seems to me that this is pretty much the same as the ones posted above, not sure about the center probe though. The way we have it is in the shape of a diamond from top-view as well as front-view, which is the same as a cube when we're talking about spatial figures... But as said, it's still a bit unclear to me wether he used any center probes at all (although you really don't want to scan without at least 1 center probe).

I found default formations in game so good, i didn't try to find better. 
Maybe there are some, I don't know...
