First of all this is not a whine. I have been playing mmo's since UO. I have also played about all of the popular ones and not so popular ones. I enjoy PVP and I decided to try EVE because of the freedom you have in the game.
However last night I was in a .4 system mining when all of a sudden I was attacked and destroyed by someone in a Thorax. When I asked the "person" why he ganked me he said I was an Alt.
Later that same night my son was mining in a .5 system when someone in a battleship ganked him. That person also called him an Alt.
So what am I missing here ??? First of all my son and I have both been playing about a month and we have no Alts. So could someone explain to me why we were accused of having Alts and why are Alts hated so much.

Because you were new and in low sec, and there aren't many real newbies in low sec these days.

You can't be ganked in a 0.5. CONCORD will kill the aggressor.

They're not hated, really. The reason is that a newbie might not have good loot, but an alt would. For example, I tried piracy once in my EVE career, and my first of three kills was an Ibis, a newbship, on a two day old character. It had two arbalest cruise launchers in it, worth 15m each at the time I looted them. Obviously it wasn't a real newbie.

It's griefers. They like to blow up people with no apparent reason. This really surprised me, that they start to gank people in high-sec space using Battleships.
The excuse of accusing someone of an alt in low sec I can understand. And if you still in starter corp that give a strong reason for them to think you an alt. I don't believe people stating "They though you as a scout for a big fleet waiting in other side". Alt scout tend to use shuttle, frigates, and covert op ship.
Personally I don't hate alts or hunting them down. Having them in local low sec do rises suspicion of being watched.
Your son probably got griefed by players who wanted easy kill in 0.5 system. Any chance that your son got can flagged?

No, they blow up people for their loot. Newbies are no exception to the rule. Do you think that being new should give you a "get out of gank free" pass?

In low sec there are no scouts for fleets anyways. Someone might just be using an alt to haul stuff.

Its not griefing. Its just killing.
Griefing means killing with the sole intent of causing grief to someone. They killed him because they wanted his loot. And as I was thinking also, it sounds like another cheap, lame exploit of the stupid flagging system.

HALF right. You CAN be ganked in 0.5 - nothing prevents someone from attacking you and if they are powerful enough, destroying you before Concord arrives to take care of them.

True, true. Especially in 0.5, where the delay is like 3 seconds instead of the normal zero.

I know from experience that you can take out another frig in 0.5 before Concord does it's usual overkill procedure. I see potential for a battleship to take down a cruiser if it has crazy high ROF and damage mod, but who would sacrifice such a fitting if not to make a political statement (again, the Miz suicide bombings comes to mind)? These few people that mentions that they are getting "ganked" in high sec better start explaining their situations better, because Im in doubt.

As I said my son was mining in Bille .5 security. He was not using any cans. As I said before he was accused of being an Alt.
Anyway thats what happened. Frankly I dont care if you believe me or not.

Somehow I doubt that someone magically killed anyone in 0.5 without repercussions.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.
