NOTICE: Now before you jump in and start yelling flames, don't. This is purely a depate about what means being a carebear and who really is a carebear.
Can one be pie-rat and still be carebear? Accoring to my research, yes. Hows that possible you might ask? Well, usually term "carebear" is used on players who f. ex. play only in empire and do agent running so he plays on the "safe side". If we look how majority of EVE piwates works, we find very similar pattern here. They hunt weak prey, newbies and overall SAFE targets for them. Could one say that acting like this is actually being a carebear? Yes, indeed you can because they work and act with very little or no risk at all (gatesnipers/campers) or hunt soft targets for easy cash (empire corp wardeccer griefers).
Are only true PvP players in 0.0 space? Or is it actually that everyone is after all carebears who seeks easy way to get quick profits with low risk? If you mine, do missions (actually they are hardest way post-RMR), hunt NPC's, hunt weak prey, gatecamp .. you are always being in position to be labeled as a carebear for your actions.
So how about we stop calling newbies and people who don't want to be your soft prey as a carebears?
Your comments and ideas? Is actually behaving like ?

You already said some of it.
There are some characteristics in carebears: - They do not engage other players in combat - They do not accept the fact that other players play the game to kill fellow players - They run missions, mine or produce, mostly sticking to empire
Now, my opinion of true pvp'ers would be: - They spend the majority of their gametime fighting other players - They do not expliot game mechanics to save their ship/pod (log-off etc.) - They don't whine when loosing a ship to another pvp'er - They can operate alone, not needing a blob of 25+ people to leave station.

I agree with most of it, i follow under the carebear part, but i realize a lot of the game is based on killing each other for fun, as do many other agent runners and miners.

No amount of word-twisting and clueless "reasoning" is going to change the fact that you are a carebear of the highest grade. Eventhough I have participated in commonly percieved carebear activities, such as mission whoring, I still try to engage in pvp every now and then. You on the other hand, are afraid to.
Kind of sad really to pay for a game and be too afraid to play it.

Well, preying on weaker targets is what piracy is about. Everything else is to seek a fight, thrill seeking if you wish.
Carebearing in my opinion is the wish for danger to not exist at all. Carebears are trying to change CCP into making Eve a risk free game. Of course, this means there are PVPers and pirates that are carebears, because some of them wants CCP to make changes that insures that they always win and never suffer from losses. You don't find many pirates and PVPers living in high sec though, which I assume is what you mean with that carebears lives "in empire". Your ideas about 0.0 are seriously deluded.

Plato says that only he who is acting as a carebear according to the true nature of a carebear is really a carebear.
Therefore, it must also be true that one is only a pvper while they are pvping, and only in the unchanging form of pvp.
The rest of the time they are just monkeys. As for whether they are good monkeys or not, we can turn to a more recent expert on monkey dualism, Augustine. He says that it is impossible for mortal monkeys to determine which monkeys dwell in the city of chimp, and which dwell in the tree of god. Therefore, none of us know who at any given moment is swinging more closely towards the Good, and who is just out to flinging poo with the pretense of being divinely inspired.
An assortment of modernist and post-modernist typists agree to disagree on the presumption that these dualisms are primarilly a product of the architecture of language. They go so far as to suppose that any discernable coherence in the orders and similarities of bananas is actually quite slippery.

OOOHH!!! Been into 0.0 TWICE!!! ... TWICE!!! Your my hero
Without the sarcasm, going somewhere in the game doesn't make you a pvpr as far as i can see its your reputation that makes you! Sometimes that means a pirate who does alot of pvp'in can still get a carebear reputation for fleeing from the first sign of trouble. Just my thoughts.

Since the Mara/Passari blockade, a thread concerning or containing the (re)definition of carebear seems to have sprung up every week. Its almost like clockwork, followed by a hail of cursing from a thousand readers.
The very definition of a carebear is someone who is unwilling to adapt. Why you guys continue to spell it out for people who continue to demand things (as well as definitions) catered to them, I'll never know. Its not like they have souls, and their opinions matter.. ;p
Anybody who matters in this game will already know what a carebear is, and doesn't need to check a forum thread once a week for reminder.

A carebear stays in high sec 99% of his time. A carebear will never go into 0.0
Note: going into low sec or 0.0 in a shuttle with no implants and a cheap clone 'just to see' is certified carebear behaviour.
ps. I'm a carebear, I spend 99% of my time in high sec and have never been into 0.0, I will operate in low sec but it's a great relief to make that last jump back into 0.5 :)

All common misconceptions. This game mirrors reality in many regards, with a futuristic twist. Most PVP'ers think the only reason to play this game is to PVP. Most other players enjoy the market aspects of the game and such.
This game encompasses many professions, if you wish to be a PVPer then be one, if you wish to be a pirate (lowest form of pvper) then be one, if you prefer the industrial side of the game, go for it. All should be able to enjoy the game as they like without being called names.
I'm a pvper that npc hunts on the side, also a CEO. The most enjoyable part of the game is the CEO part....running a successful corp and getting to know my members is the only thing that keeps me playing. Is that "carebear"? If it is, so be it, it's the part of the game I enjoy. Being a PVPer, I detest the disregard most PVPers have for the industrial types. If it were not for the industrial types, my corp would be broke and our goals un-met. The industrialists in my corp support our PVP wing to a great extent.
Respect.

Anyway, my point was to prove that those who yells that carebears should be killed and banned from game and only good EVE is to be in 0.0 (or gatecamp in lowsec) having "fun time with PvP" are actually missing whole point of game.
Why can't I be in empire and do missions? Is it really against game to do it? Surely, I have 23mil SP but I haven't done any real PvP (Only in SiSi FFA .. but can that be called PvP?) because I have some fsking mental block there preventing me having fun in EVE and I'm kind of grumpy about it

tbah (to be adult honest), in regards to carebears, if you have to ask, you're probably one.
ps. I've lost sets of +3 implants two times to podding. I'm never even been an isk-rich player.

To me a carebear is someone who never intends to pvp or who doesn't want to pvp. There are people hanging in Empire and building or mining or running missions. They aren't really afraid of pvp they are just doing what they want to do in the game.
Anyone who won't pvp because they have implants are carbears true and true. They are a scared bear.

From reading the forum it seems to me that carebear is a name given to someone by a person who thinks that someone does not play the game as he likes it. Seems more to be used as a whine or mild insult then to define anything.
Personally, I compare different playstyles to different RL professions: researchers (Research Agent runners), producers (those lucky or rich enough to get a Tech BPO), services (mission runners), miners. Those would be called carebears by most. Then you have the counterparts of policemen, soldiers and bandits, which are the PVP'ers.
