Were I dreaming or was the a screenshot of a ship flying over a planet surface ? I think we were told that in Kali you will be able to fly over planets surface .. Plz tell me we will :)
And how about starbases on Planets and oceans and stuff .. I am getting tired of the blackness and emptiness of the space

Think you were dreaming. theres a screenie of a ship flying in a nebula type thing which could have been mistaken for a planet. But no I doubt we'll have the ability to land and fly on planets for a long time let alone in this incarnation of eve, would require a large change in the game engine most probably so doubt we'll be having it in kali

it wasnt a screenshot but a short clip of Eve at E3. it showed ships flying around and battling on the planets surface. also i say building and things below so there may be bases.
but sry to tell ya it wont be coming with Kali. Kali is just phase 2 of RMR. the planet travel expansion will be in the future im hoping a year or so. - - -

Planetary flight is indeed on the drawing board. What you may have seen was a screenie of a demo of planetary flight given at the FanFest.
It may have been intended for launch in Kali but it has been put on the back burner for now. Maybe later in the year or maybe '07. Certainly Soon(TM).
There is a 'stuff on the drawing board' page around here somewhere but it would appear I am far to drunk to find it.

There are several screenshots of ships flying over the surface of an ice planet. They date back to 2003 and where mentioned to be something CCP where aiming for in Kali - but that was 2.5 years ago and things change. I wouldn't expect to see planetary flight until 3 or 4 expansions after Kali now.
Hopefully someone will provide a link to the screenshots. They where cool

I'm sure someone with a better memory will correct me, but one of the devs stated something along the lines of: "We can introduce planetary flight, but we don't want to do it until we have some good, solid gameplay reasons to do it."

Yep definately something CCP wants to do eventually. It's funny, most MMOGs try to focus mostly on planetside, then slowly work out how space is going to work. EVE already has the space side made, now just need to figure out cool ways to get the game planetside. ------------------

Yeah which would be planetary bases (which would rule). I also think they hadn't optimised it enough.
I don't think you trust, in, my, self-righteous suicide. |

It will not be in-game with Kali, unfortunately. However, the up-side to this is in the reason it was delayed - They delayed it because when they want to do planetary flight, they want to do it right. It's getting an ENTIRE expansion to itself. I epect it to absolutely rock :D. The expansion will likely begin development after Kali.

yeah I think first they plan to introduce some planetery interaction and then ramp it up and then intorduce planetery flight.

Well since we can never do anything with our actual characters it will be kinda strange, most we can do is dock with planetside ship yards and what not. ------------------

I'm guessing that'll be basically it. Stations on planets surface, mining rigs on the surface, buildings to bomb for missions etc. I'm hoping they introduce some kind of ground-combat system, make use for all these marines we have lying about.

I have a vid of that planetary flight demo, it should be in the video section here too. It seems like it could be cool, but the problem is this:
Tritanium + atmosphere = bad
Perhaps a mod, or certain type of ship(s) will be required for planetary flight. The video looked sweet, and I'm curious to see if peopel can crash into the ground, or if we bump the entire planet.

Would be awesome if planets were super hostile places to visit. I really like the paradox it would bring. For those of you who has played Grim Fandango, the words of the coroner should do the trick: "Imagine being a botanist in the land of the dead. Back when he was alive, flowers stood for beauty and life. Here they stand for suffering and death within death." (for those of you who hasn't played the game, it takes place in the land of the dead. There is a sort of "death within death", in which people are killed by bullets filled with seeds that makes your bones grow flowers).
This paradox would work great in Eve. Space is, to normal people, vast and scary. It is dark and very dangerous. There are numerous ways for a human to be ripped apart by the rough environments of space. For pod pilots however, space is where your home is. Their ships makes space very hospitable, the dangers of space becomes nothing worse than crossing the street, and it becomes a place of relative tranquility for the pilot. On the other hand, their ships are terrible for planetary flight. This poor performance makes it downright dangerous for a pod pilot to visit a planet. The ship will take structure damage continously throughout the atmospheric flight (tritanium not being stabile outside of space) and it will be a constant struggle not to crash to the ground and die. Hell, even getting into the atmosphere will give you a rough welcome by denting your shields and armor! On top of that, the ship's arnaments will have decreased performance as well as ship handling.
To the common man, the horizon and the sunset stands for beauty and life. To the pod pilot, it stands for immediate danger and unwelcoming.
How can this make a difference to gameplay? Hiding places. Going to a planet will shield you from scanners, acting sorta like a cloak. However, you cannot hide here for very long unless you're in a robust ship with a hull repairer. Also, unlike safespots (which by the time planetary flight is implemented has been nerfed, because they are lame), hiding at a planet still runs the risk of being found. Planetary combat will be very different from space combat given how gravity and atmosphere is messing everything up.
