Since two or three weeks, I have problems having a stable connection with EVE. I have two connexions, both by the same ISP, "Free" (2nd biggest ISP in France) (BTW, one is a freebox connection 1/20Mbps, the other is a "Freebox Non dTgroupT" at 128k/1Mbps).
Both connection, when using traceroute, where going throught the same routers. The biggest connexion didn't have any problem of stability, but playing EVE with the other connection will fail miserably.
I tested all the routers between the two connections (suspecting a failing router) but i had no problem pinging them (less than 1% packet loss).
I tried others connections, with others games. Same problem. But for HTTP, FTP, I didn't have any problem at all.
I tried to use a tunnel, from the bad connection to the good one, and it solved everything. After a bit research:
Free, for each port over 1024, applies a QoS on the packets. They are considered less important, so it is why so much packets are dropped for EVE and others games.
The solution: Use a program like HTTHost and HTTPort to reroute the traffic from EVE to a lower port, under 1024, to a known proxy.
Note: I can't supply such a proxy for you, because it's against the EULA I think.
CCP staff/GM/BugHunters: I hopes this helps to diagnose some disconnection bugs you get from users in France.

I hate it when ISPs fiddle with things like that....
...but all those people monoplising bandwidth with p2p though probably necessary.

yar and pray ur proxy is not using also the isp "Free" or it would just switch the problem to another node Hard Qos is the suck anyway when it is based on ports and not exclusively on packet size. If ur isp not using a Weight Fair Queing like QoS, best is to change isp :) /hug

This happens only with "Free Non DTgroupT" mode. I have no problems hosting my proxy on my other connection (which is "Free DegroupT"), everything runs fine. And no, i'll not change my ISP

I'm french too, but not on Free. I'm on Chello, and some time to time, we have the same problem, extremly slow connexion to england on port > 1024, but i beleive that there's nothing that CCP can do, only our isp ;)

It may be worth a mod moving this to "Known Issues" and giving it a sticky. ______________________________________________

I've forwarded the link to this thread to my m8s...
Personnaly I'm on a cable connection (numericable) and therefore I have no problem like Free users.
For your solution Sirilonwe, you redirect the whole application traffic (port 26000 and 80) to something under 1024 on another proxy? Or just the connection to port 26000?
For people not used to this, you have to understand the whole process...
Outgoing traffic: In the application of your choice (HTTPort...), you specify that anything coming from the application Eve on port 26000 is forwarded to another port (1000 for instance). Incoming traffic: Same process, in the other way: anything coming from port 1000 is forwarded to port 26000.
This is "transparent" for the application, but allows to get rid of connections issues.
Can a dev/mod please confirm setting up a proxy for Eve is against the EULA? Site ICE is coming to EveÖ since 445168 AD Image oversized, please take a look at the forum rules - Laqum |

Or once again, we push CCP to simply open another port(s), or why not the entire portspan?!
Sure routing ports takes some resources, but I highly doubt that CCP would see any performance change by opening a few more ports.
And no I am not talking about adding additional ports to the daemon, this can be acheived by simply changing a bit of cfg in your routers.
Many players have the issue of filtered ports, and opening(routing) ports like 25, 80, 110, 443 etc would solve issues by filtering and QoS.
Just referrer to the performance issues back in November when people used the EVE-Files proxy, you saw the change. Players FELT the change.
So please take 10 min to modify your routers and I am sure you will see a lot more happy users.

Thanks.
Here is the step by step HTTHost setup I've used (note you need a friend which don't have a "Free non dTgroupT" connection which can reroute your trafic and has a 24/7 connected computer):
A. Download this file: http://www.htthost.com/httport3snfm.exe and install it to your computer.
B. Configuration: Proxy: Use personal remote host: (put here the address and the port of your friend's HTTHost server). The server port should be configured with a number less than 1024. Misc options: bypass mode: remote host
Port mapping: Delete everything, and then add a new redirection with those parameters: local port: 26000 remote host: 157.157.139.10 remote port: 26000
C. Go to the proxy tab and click start. When you start the game, click on "Tranquility" and type "localhost". You should be able to play with no packet loss/ disconnections.
Enjoy

Technically, I only transfer the 26000 port. There's no problem with the HTTP one, the QoS is only made for ports over 1024.
Unfortunately, this solution works only for TCP (not UDP) and I'm seeking a more viable way to do this for all IP trafic and all servers (nah I also play sometimes other games ).

What ports does EvE use? I'm only forwarding a few ports through my routers firewall so this may explain the slight lag I get when loading into a gate etc
Thanks!

Well...Eve uses #26000 for gaming, and 80 for web pages. So if you are able to connect to the game, it's all ok. The small lag at gates is something everybody, AFAIK, experiences... Site ICEÖ since 934274 AD

Ahh ok thanks. I'll try setting up a vitual server for that port and see what happens. My firewall has increased latency before in some online games so it may help. If it's a problem for all that's a bit annoying? Surely not going to help in PvP?
Many thanks for the help.
