I mainly trample Sansha's minions, so this is all I have to offer. Hopefully others can add to the list with other NPC pirate types.
Sansha's minions:
These are the cruisers used by Sansha's Nation.
Manslayer -- Flameburst
Ravisher --- Havoc (160 explosive damage)
Ravager ---- Thunderbolt (160 EM damage)
Beast ------ Widowmaker (160 thermal damage)
Juggernaut - Widowmaker (160 thermal damage)
They all can lock 70km - 80km out. They seem to fire missiles (harmlessly I might add) at a range of about 50km.
They begin to scramble at about 24km. They begin to fire their single turret (of whatever type) at about 14km, though I THINK the Juggernaut begins blasting with its heavy beam laser at about 16km.
They will webify within about 9km.
Based on my experience with this flavor of NPC pirate, I would say that Ravagers are the most potentially damaging because of the thunderbolt missile it fires. The thunderbolt does 160 EM damage, of which all shields have no protection, unless a medslot tactical shield hardener is used.
Something like the 'anointed' EM ward will make each thunderbolt hit do 48 damage, unstead of the ugly 160.
Since Juggernauts are 50k bounty and Beasts are 40k, and they both drop the best loot with the best chance of finding rare items, and they both fire the same missile (meaning only 1 hardener will protect good against juggernauts and beasts), then squads of pure juggernauts, or juggernauts and beasts are the best to farm.
If anyone has similar info on other pirate cruiser types, please post it here! :)

Sometimes I notice that the Sansha do not restrict themselves to one missile. I know because I have seen my own Heavy Missiles got intercepted by Defender missiles from the Sansha I'm shooting at.
Slavehunters --- Mostly Piranha but sometimes uses rockets or heavy missiles.
Enslaver --- Mostly Bloodclaw. Cannot rule out use of Heavy Missiles in occasion.
Butcher --- Sometimes Sabretooth but sometimes Heavy Missiles.
Plague --- Does not use a missiles, but shoots you with a hybrid blaster, believed to be a Light Neutron weapon.
Anything lower than a Slavehunter do not fire missiles. Savages seem to hit you with a small medium laser. Raveners hit you with a dual beam laser with an MF crystal, Scavengers with a light electron blaster and Servants with a 125mm autocannon.
Slavehunters, Enslavers and Butchers do not appear in special spawn sites but only in belts. However I do find them more annoying than the Plagues, Manslayers, and Ravishers that haunt the special spawn sites.
The Slavehunters seem to be able to fire missiles in quick succession. They probably have multiple launchers of the A-3 type along with a small laser. Seeing a small group of them means a fun ride because you will soon be covered by a lot of missiles. You will run out of defenders if you try to intercept, or run out of energy if you wish to smartbomb the missile swarm. These ships remind me of Kestrels or Inquisitors.
Despite the higher bounty on the Enslaver, I breathe easier on this small type. It seems to be the rough equivalent of the Minmatar Slasher or the Caldari Heron. It probably is equipped with 2 turrets and one launcher. It does not fire as many missiles as a Slavehunter but it appears to do more damage on the guns.
The Butcher is one little mean beastie. It seems more comparable to a Merlin, Rifter or Tristan.

Edited by: Ana Khouri on 21/08/2003 04:41:57 You might add which their prefered range is, which can be quite important for people with shortrange weaponery.
The 20k sahsa usually trys to stay at 8-14km, while the 40 and 50k sashas come within 3-6km. Haven't met the 30k yet.
In addition to that I might add that you'll need 2 thermal and 2 em if you want to chain 40 and 50k sashas from close range, otherwise you will get too much damage.
Best spawns I found so far were 4*40k and 3*50k, sometimes 1*50k + 3-4*40k.
Serpentis pirates
Generally: Most likely the easiest pirates ingame. Only the 40 and 50k use missles. All use shortrange weapons and usually try to get as near as possible to you. Shots of them begin do do visible damage from 7km or less. Loot are Hybrid blaster, cargo extenders (up to 27%) and rare hybrid damage mods. The 30k have the best loot value, extremly poor loot from the 40 and 50k.
Chief Sentinel (exequror; 20k) No missles
Drug Lord (celestis; 30k) no missles
Chief Defender (vexor; 40k) 160 kinetic missles
Chief Protector (thorax; 50k) 160 em missles
A 4 * drug lord spawn is a exellent money maker for single cruisers if chained. 1 thermal and 1 kinetic shield suffices to keep your shield up without using SB. For BS a 5 * chief protector spawn is good to make bounty money, 1-2 thermal and 2 kinetic hardeners are recommended.
Best spawns I found were 5* 30k, 5*40k and even once a 5*50k.
Gurista pirates:
Only encountered the 20k and 50k there. The drop rails and rare shiedl hardeners. Occassionally rare sensors. Damage mods of guristas are usualy low grade compared to serpentis. Have not hunted guristas before the renaming of the damage mods, but before that guristas dropped the (worthless) I versions while serpentis dropped the II's.
Gurista Terrorist (Osprey, 20k) shortrange, no missles; drops dual 150's up to gauss
Gurista Nullifier (Moa, 50k) tries to keep at 10-12km; 160 kinetic missles; drops 250's; drops 250's up to gauss.
Since it is using kinetic missles the gurista 50k is far less dangerous than the serpentis 50k.
I only hunted them in the few system in fountain where they are present, best spawn there is a 1*50k + 3*20k.

Heavy missiles do 150 damage, cruise 300, torps 450. With a ward they do 45. Confirmed both with a calculator and killing sansha's.

"Sometimes I notice that the Sansha do not restrict themselves to one missile. I know because I have seen my own Heavy Missiles got intercepted by Defender missiles from the Sansha I'm shooting at."
... Could it be they weren't actually intercepted, but simply exploded due to proximity of the missiles fired by the Sansha ship at you? It's a known missile bug, one which i abused once or twice... as long as you keep firing your own missiles at the other ship (be it the cheapest rockets even) the chance their missiles reach you is very small as the missiles blast one another midflight..
edit: detailed info on NPC ships and the weapons they use can be found in TTi Nexus database (Entity/Pirate Drone folder)

The screen came up with a sentence saying in effect though not in these exact words that the the Heavy Missile was destroyed by Defender missile, and I didn't have defender missiles as I was the only one in the system. But boy there was a swarm of these Sansha shooting missiles at me.

Have a look in the TTi Nexus database. It contains ALL information about EVERYTHING.

Just curious i have not fought 40 or 50k sanshas yet. How much harder are they than the 20k and 30k sanshas. I have no problme taking down multiple chains of those. |

I think the 40k and 50k are easier.. the 30k (ravagers) fire thunderbolts that do EM damage.
The 40k (beasts) and 50k (juggernauts) fire widowmakers that do thermal damage.
Otherwise, I think they're about the same.. they seem to die just as fast as the Ravagers.
The juggernauts use a punishing beam laser, though..
As for tti nexus database.. I didn't see anywhere on there where it lists pirates and the types of missiles they fire.

Sansha Ravagers definitely use defender missiles.
Curiously, when I managed to mouseover on one it showed as "Defender V".
Tech 5 missile perhaps?
I'm a little perturbed by the lack of missile/missile launchers dropped by Sansha - they use missiles a lot and only rare mods they seem to drop are C4s Coiled Circuits, Partial Hull Conversions, and all of the good tac shield types.
They also drop bloody hundreds of Focused Afocal Medium/Small Lasers/Masers and Quad Light Beams/Focused Light Beams.
I need projectiles, god damn it.

Angels drop projectiles AFAIK. You won't find a single proj from Sansha's.

Sansha used to drop projectiles. They also used to drop hybrids and even missile launchers. Even their ammo. But that was several patches ago before every drop seems to be a warp stabilizer, 50mm armor, a warp disruptor or a laser beam.

Only played with Liquidators. They were tossing Tbolts.
I know I could have sworn I saw a pirate launch a torp before.

Since I've killed some 1000's of Sansha's I know very well that the TTI nexus database is correct... And they also drop what they are supposed to drop... ie, Juggernauts drop Heavy beams and multi/gamma M crystals, Beasts drop Heavy pulse and X-ray/Ultra M, Ravagers drop Focused beams and Radio M, Ravishers drop focused pulse and Micro/infra M. Though they may sometime drop something else(and of course they sometimes drop quad light beams).
