Ok, I'm using a Ferox right now, 4x 250mm Prototype I Gauss Guns and 3x Limos Heavy Launchers. I'm about to upgrade to Arbalests but I started thinking...what is the different in damage over time with heavy missiles versus light missiles in an assault launcher. So here are the following scenarios:
My ferox against an NPC battleship. Which does more damage (and by approximately how much)
3x Arbalest Heavy Launchers with a generic heavy missile 3x Arbalest Assault launchers with a generic light missile
My Ferox against quick moving frigates and cruisers. Which does more damage (and by approximately how much)
3x Arbalest Heavy Launchers with a generic heavy missile 3x Arbalest Assault Launchers with a generic light missile.
What exactly is the advantage and disadvantage of going heavy over an assault? I used to think it was DPS but now I'm starting to think that the only advantage heavies have is longer range, and the only advantage lights have is doing more damage to smaller targets.
If thats the case then I may as well use Assault launchers as my optimal range right now in my ferox is 22km which I'm sure light missiles can easily do with the average skills I have in missiles right now. Can anyone clarify this for me before I go out and spend a buttload of money on heavy arbalests? Thanks so much in advance!

This math is easy.
y damage / x second rof = dps
Do that for assaults 75 hp / x rof = ?
Heavies 150 hp / x rof = ?
Let me tell ya that at least assaults are half the rof, they are gonna come up shy on the dps :P -------------------------------------------- "A plan is just a list of things that don't happen." -- Parker, _The Way of the Gun_

Edited by: MWEI on 06/01/2006 22:33:58 DPS for biger weapons against bigger ships is better than smaller weapons against bigger ships
DPS for bigger weapons against smaller ships is about the same as a smaller weapon against a small ship

So basically heavy launchers will do more damage under pretty much all circumstances?
I just can't understand then why everyone in the ferox setup thread uses assault launchers instead of heavy launchers

guns are for cruisers and up, maybe frigs too from a distance. problem is REALLY fast frigs (interceptors) getting inside ur tracking range. thats where missiles come in. light missiles do more damge to small, fast targets, (intys) so assualt launchers get used.

Because of Signature Radius
Check the Sig Radius of your Target and the Explosion Radius of your Missiles and compare them.
Frigates have around 40 Sig Radius, Light Missiles Explosion Radius 50. So they do near
40/50 = 80% x 75 (max damage of lights) = 60 Damage
Now lets shoot with a heavy launcher at a frigate sized target:
40/150 (exp radius heavies) = 26,6% x 150 (max damage heavies) = 39,9 Damage.
Woot! The 150 damage missile did less than the 75 damage missile!
Assault Launcher I: 12 Secs RoF Heavy Missile Bay I: 15 Secs RoF
Now things get even worse...
Thing is: A large sized target like Cruiser (150) or Battleship (400) would take the full damage of the Heavies.
There are methods of making Heavies work rather well against small size Targets, for example using a Target Painter.
But if you are in a Mission fighting 1000 Frigates and 3 Cruisers, then you know what you should equip.
