Hi verrryyy nooby question but i just got started trying to probe stuff down, so.. yeah my skills are sucktastic to say the least BUT..
I get my probes out, scan, find the signature.. start lowering the radius of the probes.. jiggle them around.. scan.. so far so good.
but when i reach the really small radius i find that the probe spheres no longer meet in the middle, so.. i can't find the spot I am trying to probe down.. is there a way to get the probes to move in closer to eachother? I am probably missing something VERY elementary but.. my poor brain is drawing a blank.
please?
help?

Since I'm not sure just how much you know about the mechanics of scanning, I may end up saying something you already know. With that, you should be able to move the probes individually until the spheres overlap with whatever you are scanning. Since I'm not in game at the moment, I don't recall which key it is, but I think it is either shift or control that will allow you to move a single probe by itself. It should be fairly simple to find which key it is as all the probes' "grabbers" will change color when you do.
I tend to press F10 to open the map, go into solar system view and then position my probes around whichever site I wish to try. I think normally this is at around 8AU per probe. At this point, I'll have the probes' overlap of the site surround (360 degrees) the site. Think of a Venn diagram and you want your site in the point where they cross. I scan. The site will probably shift location slightly.
Adjust the probes so they line up on the horizontal, keeping the site in the center. Use your mouse to flip the map such that you are looking at the vertical axis and adjust the probes again so that the site is in the center. Switch back to horizontal and lower the distance on the probes.. say 4AU. You will now notice gaps and the probes will likely not have the site in the middle. Position each probe so that your site is in the middle again. Scan and repeat until you either discover the site or find that your skills aren't enough to fully scan it down.
I would suggest getting a sisters launcher and sisters probes as well as a dedicated scanning ship. All of these items will give you bonus to scanning. I would certainly work on training scan skills, to at least 3-4, though. |

Also, use the mouse wheel to scroll in and out when adjusitng your probes. What looks like the center can be quite off when you zoom in.
You also want to make sure that your ship is bonused for probing. Each race has a ship that will fill this role. You can also get a Scan Pinpointing Array and a Scan Rangefinding Array for your mid-slot.
With Astrometrics at IV and Astrometric Pinpointing, Astrometric acquisition and Astrometric rangefinding at III, and practice, you will be able to pin down things in 3 or 4 cycles of adjusting probes and scanning. |

I neglected to mention this. Yes, this is important. I try to keep my camera switching to only a "top down" and a "side" view when adjusting. You'll want to zoom in each time you scan down (lower the scan size of your probes) so that you can see the true distance and position of the probes.

ONe more thing You can adjust the positions of all 8 probes at the same time by holding down ALT. |

Just making sure... no intent to offend...but... you do know that there are two preset configurations? One in a "flower" shape and one in a "double-cross" shape. |

I seen em but not sure what to use when, i take it one is better for just trying to find it initially? |

The flower one is for doing a system wide sweep which is no longer necessary since the latest changes to the scanning interface in 1.1. Ask the sigs stay visible between scans now. The cluster is for pinpointing the sigs. They also added a way to save your own presets. The only way to really understand the scanning system is by video. Search youtube for videos that are more recent then January 2013 |
