Has anyone taken this lot on yet ? Do they always spawn at a set point or can you get to range ? Will they auto aggro everything or is it possible to have a tank draw fire ?
My corp has recently cleaned the final level in Human Cattle a couple of times and are wondering if Portal to War is possible also.

What level of mission? It's definitely possible to have a tank draw fire but the AI is significantly improved so you'll need your remote repairer to have a tank too and have the tank concentrate on drawing aggro by firing once at every ship you can. If they go yellow (stop firing), fire at them again. Sometimes you can also draw aggro by firing at one that's damaging a gangmate, too. Like I said, the AI is clever. However, the initial aggro is by range. Imagine a sphere around every ship. Go into this sphere and they aggro you and everyone in their group aggros you.
I did human cattle with two corpmates, close range mostly. It was my Deimos (The Hardmobile) tanking with Naliana (my corpmate) in a dominix remote repairing and Iehara (another corpmate) was there for some fun in a caracel/moa (forget which) and trying to take out frigates. Those warp scrambling frigs will seriously ruin your day if something goes wrong. Was disappointed that the acceleration gate on level 3 was fake. To be honest, if you're tanking properly, you should have no need to worry about being able to get to range.

Portal to War seems to be the lvl3 continuation to the lvl2 Human Cattle series of missions. Its 5 part and from what I have read on these forums part 2 is extremely tough. You are given a time limit for the mission completion and if that limit expires (1 hour) then an Amarr fleet spawns. This fleet looks (from the screenshots I have seen) to be of a similar size to that at the end of Human Cattle but with more Jakar type apoc's. Tanking the spawn I hope will not be an issue (we also use a domi as a support ship) but we had some problems with rats swapping targets in Human Cattle that we cannot seem to nail down (lost a couple of our frigates). I was just looking to see if anyone else had taken up the challenge. Ah well its only ships and isk ..

This mission is a complete joke dont attempt it, just lost a raven too it, there is no timer to show when your hour is up and im sure mine wasnt i jumped into the last level got instant aggroed by the whole level before i had even targeted anything, 11 apoc and jakar battleships, 15 cruisers, and about 12-15 frigs. I was webbed and scrambled before i could warp out. Im sorry but this has to be the most stupid lvl 3 mission how do ccp expect people to be able to complete this.

This mission can be done in the time and you just need to be careful with your time.
The first gate you'll find you'll be attacked by Blackbirds and other frigs which should be easy enough to clear.
The second gate consists of more cruisers and frigs, but NOT the Backup Fleet that you're warned about coming within the hour.
If your hour elapses and you have yet to enter the 2nd stage then a simple click on your scanner will show you what awaits you. Remember, read the mission breifing as it does say "..you probably won't survive"
Well now you know what that means.....
Oh, yes i have done this mission and all the subsequent stages. Just be quick, or be with friends. Solo after the hour is a no go.

Mission isn't worth the faction loss not to mention the crappy rewards. Decline it and get a better one. |

I have read the various threads about this mission and I understand that for a solo lvl3 mission runner that it is very difficult. However I do not intend to do the mission solo, in fact its not even my mission, its one of my corp mates. We regularly gang up for mission runs as its quicker, safer and more fun, yes the lack of group rewards kind of sucks but we alternate who does the missions so everyone is happy. We only want to do this mission for the fun of blowing the heck out of a load of amarrian slavers !
We will have a number of lvl4 capable (solo) battleship pilots and a well practiced logistics setup. I don't expect any problems actually getting through the mission objectives with our team I'm more interested in details of the fleet that comes in so I can plan our survival.

Done the level 3 one twice in a Cyclone, and the fleet warped in at 75 mins both times. First time it happened I was right in the middle, but aligned and warped out with shields/armour gone. Second time I was just hanging around for a better look :)

Edited by: d''hofren on 10/01/2006 10:17:23 I've done it twice so far this week. However that first section of the 2nd part of the chain is tough, really tough. You will need good skills in your chosen ship type and by good skills I mean lvl 5 in the basic support skills, lvl 4 in your chosen weapon class and and decent drone skills. The action in the second mission started with the gate dumping me right on top of 3 webbing frigs, (they might scramble as well), and three navy black birds. Break with normal convention and get rid of the Black Birds first. They aren't too tough but they pile on a world of damage. Use drones to get rid of the inties but keep them on an unholy tight leash. If you don't keep them under control they will dash off and agro the rest of the spawn. If that happens you will probably die rather fast. I solo the mission in a muninn HAC. I suspect I could do it in a cyclone but I would want to have a cap booster and a very heavy tank. My brutor agents gave me caldari in the first "action" lvl of part two and amarr in the bit after it, (which is just a couple of sentries, 5 or so omens and soem frigs.
Oh and bm each level as you clear it. That way you can chat to the agent to complete the mission and nip back for loot once the npc's have gone. I pulled a +3 perception implant from the first time I ran this.
Other posters have a very valid point in that this mission really hammers your amarr and caldari standings.

yeah thats the big sekrit of this mission. rewards are crap, faction loss is huge, no bounties
but you get a +3 pretty often. I had it happen twice to me already and ive done it maybe six times ?

Edited by: Fergus Runkle on 30/01/2006 11:06:11 Edited by: Fergus Runkle on 30/01/2006 11:03:02 We have now successfully destroyed the 3 waves of reinforcements that show up on 2 separate occasions now. It took us a few shuttle deaths to work them out but its actually easier to do than taking on the fleet at the end of the "Human Cattle part 5 of 5".
This info applies to the lvl3 mission "Portal to War part 2 of 5"
The 1st wave of reinforcements appears 75mins after you enter the first gate into the deadspace. There are 3 waves and in total you should get 4 Navy Jakar type apoc's, 6 mixed type battleships (apocs and/or arma's), 10 mallers, 10 assorted interceptors.
These all spawn around one of the cathedrals and will instantly and randomly target any ship within 250km of that cathedral.
Our (tested) plan is to blitz through the mission proper and get the data disk out to safety then head off to over 255km away from the cathedral. We used 1 cruise Raven, 1 torp Raven, 1 shield transfer Domi and a remote sensor boosting ship (scimitar in our case).
Once you are at that range you can wait for all the waves to spawn. Then inch your dedicated tank towards then, they should aggro at about 245-249km. Then you have a duck shoot as they all stream towards you.

As a Gallente mission runner the first gate fleet is Caldari and the second gate fleet is Amari. So I just go back to base adjust my hardeners for the racial differences.
I fly a Domi on this mission and it's not too difficult with the proper hardeners. I once went into the Caldari area with Amari hardeners and had to warp out twice to finally take them out. Dohhhh! Couldn't figure out why I was taking so much damage. LOL
Last time I ran it I got a Social Adaption chip.

Well I just lost my Wolf in the final stage. I had to log in the second stage last night - came back tonight, obviously the timer does not reset. I jumped into the Amar gank fleet and was dead in 4 seconds. I never have to warp out of lvl 3 missions in the Wolf - so it did not really occur to me, plus there was pretty bad lag. This mission has no sense of humor.

I soloed it in my Brutix. I noted the time on my Eve clock when I started the mission and kept my eye on it all the time. I didn't mess around picking up cans and finished it about 10 mins before the hour was up.

hehe, telling the time must be very hard for some people
If u have problems with it, set an alarmclock and set it to 45 min to be sure.
I think i did this mission in like 30.
