I also agree. The game has a huge amount of potential which is not being realised. I have a few ideas which I don't think would be over complicated to introduce and which would greatly improve game-play:
1. Rather than just putting npc pirates everywhere and asteroids to mine, introduce the occasional abandoned alien ship wreck to explore. These should be fairly valuable and rare occurrences which player characters can...with some effort and team work, haul back to a space station for recycling. Such wrecks should generate alot of player interest and should result in players travelling to the systems where the wrecks are and competing for the prize. The wrecks could have automated defence systems that were still active, and thus players would need to render the ship inoperable before towing it back to a station.
2. You could introduce the occasional natural disaster....solar flares, or nova explosions, which meant that whole solar systems would require evacuation by a given time. Players could then pick up missions to transport civilians and their valuables away from pending doom. Other disasters such as asteroid or comets threatening planets and space stations. Space stations that lose they positional thrusters and begin to spiaral toward planets etc.
3. You could introduce corp missions to escort VIPs in luxury npc space yaghts, from one system to another through hostile territory. Or resue missions, where players have to go and pick up npc survival pods stranded in space.
4. Introduce Science missions where players have to go and explore uncharted regions or gather scientific data on planets for prospective settlers, and stars. You could link missions like this with systems where the sun has become unstable, so there could be missions to gather data on the stability of the stars, and later, missions to evacuate the systems.
5. Introduce space anomalies such as worm holes, that appear for a short time and which can lead to systems rich in valuable minerals. But if the wormhole closes when you're on the wrong side then you're in big trouble. Match the risk to the reward.
6. Introduce an ellusive alien species which is rumoured to take over whole systems, unhilating all life forms within it unless they work together to defend the system ferociously. The alien strategy could be to scout a system for up to a week before launching the attack. Sightings of the aliens around the sytem and near space stations would warn players on the assault to follow.
Anyway, I am sure I couild think of alot more.
