Edited by: ParMizaN on 08/01/2006 18:48:55 hmm, afaik (since i dont fly minmatar at all) a close range, autocannon plated rifter *should* make short work of a kestrel. It would be a tough battle if the kestrel is also plated with rockets though.
You could also try long range with 280s but im not sure how to set that one up at all
edit: and beat to it :/

I've been spending a while working on this with a Caldari friend that has spent a while getting very good with the Kestrel.
A Kestrel pilot with good missile skills just seems to rip the rifter apart the moment you get within range. You could try jumping in with a MWD and then jam using a close orbit with AC's. However they can still use FoF missiles.
The way I have found to beat a kestrel in my rifter is to sit beyond the missile range around about 38km using 280mm How's, 60% bonus ammo, sensor booster and an AB to keep distance. To get the distance you need though you will need to have maxed skill in Sharpeshooter and Trajectory Analysis as well as fitting gyro's.
2 problems I have found with this is that the kestrel can just warp away, and even worse is you have to fit the rifter just for taking out a kestrel leaving it weak in other situations and the kestrel will have standard fittings.

I can get to 38km (well 37xxxm)with lights and have the relevant skills to 4 only, so a good player will get you at that range even.
I guess you have to jam him and shoot him down before he reloads fof missiles. also dampening is a solution (fof missiles sould only target up to ship lock range). ------------------------------ Removed due to offensive content - Laqum

The kestrel in my opinion is a superior frigate to the rifter.
Also I meant tracking enchancers not gyros earlier.
My skills aren't maxed in Sharp S or Trajectory A and i've only been using Tracking Enchancer I and I can hit 36km. So with decent tracking enhancers, maxed skills, including fall off you could hit over 40km, if you were just in a 1 vs 1 fight i'd probably drop the shield booster and fit a target painter, assuming CPU and PG allows it just so you hit more frequently, no point going to all the effort if you hit so rarely you cannot break the kestrels tank.
If you had really good skills the Vigil could be a better choice as you have 45km targeting range which you can stick in a targeting computer to get even more range, but you'd need the skills to be able to fit more than just one 280 How.

An autocannon rifter would be absolutely shredded by a rocket kestrel.
Your only real possibility is to stay out of its web range and use howies. - Proud member of the [23].

I have mediocre (level 3) missile skills across the board, was using 4xMalkuth Standard launchers on my Kestrel. Started firing on and running away from an autocannon Rifter, got him down to half structure before he killed me. I'd have won if my missile skills had been better or if i'd fit arbalest launchers, it was that close. But, if I hadn't engaged at long range i'd have died much quicker and he'd have been in good shape still.

if you get webbed by a rocket kes, you're dead. bye.
kite it - its the only way.
but you will never kill it, because you have to be outside its range really to be effective, and at that range you can't really scramble (at least for any length of time)

In normal conditions with relatively skilled pilots Rifter has no chance to win Kestrel. The draw is best possible result for Rifter.

Arty Rifter --> Rocket Kessy. Rifter orbits at 15k scrams and kills. Rifter will take 0 damage.
AC Rifter ---> Missle Kessy. If the fight starts close the Rifter should outdammage the Kessy and win ( have not accually tried this )
