A friend and I were thinking of buying one of these two titles and thought this, the beloved Eve community may know something of these two titles?

X3 is a great game. Graphically amazing and with a lot of non-linear gameplay. If his computer can support it and he enjoys openendedness, go for X3. Capital ships, fighters, and similar can all be joystick controlled.
Freespace (hopefully you mean fs2) is much more linear and storyline-based but with more overwhealming actions (nothing like engaging 40-60 enemies at once) but only semi-decent graphics due to the age. Fully joystick compatible. If he enjoys some nerve-wrecking and intensive battles, go for freespace 2.
Both are incredible but serve different gaming purposes. ----------------------

Before a mod swings by and lockies or moves it, though, my 2 ISK.
X series is pretty tedious. It's basically what EVE would be if every pirate quit, plus some flashy graphics and an irritating control interface. For more irritating control interfaces, please see the many revisions of "Battlecruiser 3000ad" that Derek Smart has released and still can't sell.
In other words, beyond the controls, X is carebear paradise.
Freelancer has great multiplayer content and, IMHO, smoother graphics. It also has a lot of mods for it. The solo game is fun, and still leaves over 80% of the game for you to explore after the plot completes. Carebearing is a bit borked in it....you need lots of guns and a quick mouse finger at all times, and there is no manufacturing portion. Mining is done by blasting bits of asteroids with regular weapons for hours on end with little payout.
So for the PvPer that is annoyed with people and wants to PvE alone for awhile, Freelancer is better.
If you're looking for the closest game to Wing Commander Privateer and Privateer 2: The Darkening, go with Freelancer. X is more like Starflight but prettier and clunkier.
If you really meant "Freespace", the old game, you should own that. A great game, even by today's standards. Straight flight/combat sim. ------------------------------------ Join Channel MacroIntel! |

X3? Beauty beyond imagination. If you got the insane hardware it requires. Just insane. Some people say it's very buggy.

You can't compare the two. X series is about open-ended combat/exploration/trading, Freespace series is about single fighter and bomber sorties. The only similarity is that they are first-person space games.

I'd choose the freespace games of the X series. While the X series is fun it feels too empty after playing EvE.
The freepsace games are alot of fun (especially freespace 2) with a very experienced (although probably ageing) modding community behind it. The mission editor is well documented and easy to learn giving you the chance to make your own missions and have some fun.
Freespace all the way.

"Dive Dive Dive - Hit your burners pilot!"
Freespace2 is excelent fun and a must play! My only grievance with the game is the great story often breaks imersion with the illogical ship/squadren jumping - This is to ensure you get to fly each ship class throughout the single player campaign, but it didnt quite work right for me.
Haven't played the X series yet, looks real pretty but its a single player eve right? Why go out for hamburger when you can stay in and eat steak? ... or something? Maybe I need to try a bite, shame I can't seem to find a demo for x3 :(

If I had to pick between the too I'd def go with FS2 although as already stated they are pretty much different types of game.
X 3 looks truly awesome & I was able to cope with the hardware side of it but at least for meself it was pretty buggy. Nothing more irritating than try to find a way around doing something due to a bug.

Edited by: Galk on 10/01/2006 00:15:28 Never realy got into the original, or the first sequel of X.. for a space flighty i allways preferd Iwar2.
Freespace is a work of briliance though, though i preferd the original (best intro ever) for it's total immersion over number 2 (never was a fan of the colored nebular), there's holding neither back realy aside my personal taste.
Shame there will never be a number 3... Good ol derek was blasting over at ign a few weeks ago proclaiming there will never be a fs3 unless he codes it....
Ofcourse thats probaly not a bad thing then

If your a FS2 fan though id check out this trailer ______
862 buses later, galks back on the road again:)

Moved from EVE General -Capsicum
They're both very different games.
Freespace comes from the x-wing/wing commander kind of games, which are basically a semi-tactical shooter. Freespace is very linear and limited in that way, but it is one of the ebst games i have ever played, no question.
X3 is more of a business simulator than anything else. Before you can get into wing commander like action, you have to build up your resources to be able to buy or build the stuff you need. The management section of the game cannot be avoided, so that's a price you'll have to pay. Also, the actual action is not of freespace quality imho, but then again, it's not what X3 is all about.
They're very different games. X3 is like Morrowind, where Freespace is like Mechwarrior - those are the most fitting comparisons i can think of.
