Hi
Well been playing the game now for 2 weeks and loving it. But i am puzzled on how to start getting some real money in with trading and i know it can be done cos seen people do it. And yes i know u buy low sell high. But when i go to the market and clik on a trade goods green button to show what supply and demand there is it shows that the supply price (ie the buy price) is higher than the Demand (ie the sell price) so how do u make a profit???

What you are seeing when you do that is the supply and demand for the current region you are in. What you need to do is look at all of the supply and demand for items in one region and then jump over to another region and the check the supply and demand there. Depending on the time of day you play (how far after the server reboot) you may have to look further out.
I normally play 12 hours after server reboot and usually check 6 regions for various trade goods before starting my trade runs for the night. This can take around 30 minutes to do.
Hope this helps. Feel free to message me in game if you have any further questions.

Like alot of things in this game - to do it right takes time and effort and patience and luck. (and to be honest - friends and business aquantances).
But here are a few tips.
One you want as much cargo as you can get. An Indy or a Cruiser or a big frigate with Cargo Expanders on. (need Mechanic Skill, and Hull Upgrades) You also want speed (as trading takes alot of traveling) so get Naviagtion Skill + After Burner Skill + Warp Drive Operations. (the rest of the Navigation Skill Group skills are great too). You also need starting isk to invest.
Ok now that you are good to go.. sorta .. you need to start studying the market tables and maps. You can trade any item in game practicaly, not just trade items. Some of the best isk is made selling rare items from pirate drops , but if you have only been playing a few weeks your gona have some issues with investing 2-3 million on a Mining laser, so lets stick to Trade Goods for the moment. (as a side note you can buy and sell Ore and Minerals for profit as well).
Open your market menu, and open items, and keep opening the drop down menus till you have a list of all the trade goods. Make sure you have Region selected in the Market Menu. (It is good to position yourlself in a System like New Caldari or Amarr or Yulai etc.. where you can access 6-10 other regions with just 1 jump, saves times). Now you will have a list of items. If you click on each item you will see either a table or a map show up - depending on what its set to look at , you can toggle bewteen them with a button. I use the table to get a good list of prices and locations (which can be ordered by clicking the title of the column).
My rule of thumb for low end trading ( when you dont have 20 mil to buy robotics or the like) is to take your total isk and divide by your total cargo. The number you get will be the price range you will look for. Find an item you want that fits your price range (remember to look at the items capacity and find out the isk / capacity - not just the isk on the list as some items are 2m3 and some are 0.1m3), the object being that if you can almost fill your cargo you will make the most profit. Then you must look at the buy and selling prices. Pen and paper are good to use.. record the standard buy and sell prices. NPC dont diverge much and you can usualy tell whats a NPC and whats a PC price.
Things to keep in mind are buy price, sell price, quantity of each and locations. Buy low sell high.. yes .. but time is also a factor. You dont want to do 20 jumps to get the best deal .. when you get 2/3 of the price in 1/2 the distance. You could make 2 trips and make more profit. As you can imagine this whole process takes alot of time and patience. Supply and Demmand and their respective quantities change after each server downtime. After you have got some basic numbers down on several places to buy or sell certain items and how much quantity they have, move to another region and repeat the process.. you will find that some regions are similar in prices and some different. After checking a few Regions you should have a good idea of what your options are. Now its a matter of picking your locations .. bookmarking stations and systems for easy transit and then alot of warp - jump - warp - jump - warp - jump - dock.
Some basic rules of thumb for buying stuff .. i like to only buy when im at the station in question.. other people will buy items remotely and then go pick it up. I like my method better as i know whats going where and if the trasnaction fails i will know immediately as the item wont show up in my Items Tab. (but thats me - each person should develope a system they are comfortable - some corps may even have written proceedures to follow.)
If you cant find an item you thought you bought - things to check are: your Assets Menu - which can list all you items, you Wallet which has a Transactions Tab and a Journal Tab. You can use these to see if and where money went.
Ok - thats quite enough of that .. post any questions and i will fill in any gaps or clarify anything i left confusing (most notably the whole post :P )

Thanks for the tips on trading. Very useful for a newbie planning on going that way.

Another way to get trade goods is by convoy raiding.
After a disagreement with the Gallente based Transtellar Shipping, I recovered my money by appropriating items from their convoys. Some of these items make excellent starting materials for an aspiring trader.

Although some people consider the use of alts as bad roleplaying i thought i would add this, about the use (abuse) of npc haulers to get trade goods. If you use an alt you can take down npc hualers, although you need to do some work to make the alt an effective fighter. My suggestion would be a kestrel pilot fitted with missiles, as high a level as possible (im not sure the exact time needed to get an alt trained to use some of the bigger missiles). Either you will have to put time into training the alt or you will have to put time into taking down the indies with regular missiles. Anyhow - the alt kills the indies and the main character is used to fly in after with indies.
I did not find this to be very profitable - but as a member of an industrial corp - my time is usualy best spent mining. A solo player might find attacking npc haulers to be very lucritive - and fun to boot.

Edited by: Khruger on 25/08/2003 23:59:39 That is exactly it Toshiro.
If your careful and manage your faction (ie. dont raid every day) you can string this along for quite a while. In particular, covoys are good for missiles, bulk trade goods, and various types of ammo.
I don't do it constanly, and very rarely do it much now, but it was a huge help when I was getting started.
And, well, there Gallente for crying out loud, just begging for someone to cap em.........
