Over the course of several weeks I have been having conversations with numerous "pirates" and reading numerous forums dedicated to them.

My curiosity got the better of me and I wanted to know why someone would choose this type of character. So I asked them.

My experience with the pirating side of our game has been quite interesting and I have garnered a great respect for what I would call the legitimate pirates.

The legitimate pirates deem their work as a profession. If they stop you, they will ask for money, you give them the money, they let you go, on your way, a bit poorer. If one fails to give them money the victim dies. The pirates equation is simple and to the point. How to remedy this....carry money with you and do not fly in low security space if you cannot afford to. What is most interesting to me is that this type of pirate, with whom I have spoken, is intelligent, has a grasp of the english language and has long term plans for his organization and himself.

The player that wrecks this equation is the illegitimate pirate...the terrorist. They kill for the sake of killing. They would, and probably have, destroyed each other at times. These players, from my conversations and thread reads, are generally children and young adults. They need their game to be quick and tend to foster a need for dominance and superiority...at any cost.

Both types of pirates DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR GAMING EXPERIENCE. They are concerned about theirs....as they should be.

I have noticed that the latter pirate type is slowly diminishing in EVE and that alot of capital corporations are allying to punish the pirate...as they should...because the capital corporations DO NOT CARE ABOUT THEIR GAMING EXPERIENCE.

Capital corporations do indeed out number the pirate organizations. They always will. Knowing that, the capital corporations can keep the pirate organizations in check if they wish. It is a simple matter of desire. The pirate has called your bluff and you have yielded to fear. Good job Buccaneers, Corsairs & Highwaymen.

The pirate has a place in EVE. They are an intrinsic element to the game. They keep our fake personas on edge and when they succeed in minutes destroying what has taken us days or weeks to acquire, we are jealous and enraged.

Could all pirates be a bit more friendly and let us keep our lives after destroying our ship...sure...but they don't have to. That's their game. Play your own game.

For information purposes...I am not currently a pirate.
