As I was saying in another thread, I really really really love my Ferox and have every intention of specializing in it and flying them for a long time (most likely until I can fly command ships).
Anyway, the point of the post is that I am currently using a dual setup, 4 250mm railguns and 3 heavy missile launchers. Hence I am focusing on both gunnery and missile skills. Is this a bad thing? Is it going to limit me in some way? I figured it was better to be great at both things across the board, rather than uber with 1 but completely gimped with the other. It seems to me that there really aren't that many missile skills that are truly necessary. Mostly rapid fire, heavy missile, target navigation prediction, and thats about it for a dual setup. (sure missile projection and bombardment helps but I don't need the extra range at all. I mostly just go for projection not bombardment).
So I figure if I just occasionally work on those skills, I can focus mainly on gunnery skills for a better DPS (along with all the other support skills I'm working on such as shield stuff, cap stuff, etc) and be great all around.
Is this a bad idea? Every time I read a thread about the Ferox it seems like everyone is always going for all missile launchers with nosferatus, or all railguns with nosferatus, rarely a combination of railguns and launchers.

if you fly caldari or minmatar ships, limiting yourself to one set of weapons generally makes 1/2 your highslots useless. It's an absolute ***** to have to train up all those skills, but it's worth it in the end.
And besides, gallente have to do the same with drones if they want to get the most out of their ships.

Gunnery and missile skills are good, as then you can move between caldari and gallante easily
Keep doing what your doing and focus on the strengths of the ship you can fly

Good, I'm just glad to hear that I'm not wasting my time :)
It just seems like a lot of Caldari pilots go straight for a Raven and focus entirely on Missiles. I have no intentions of blasting into a Raven, I want to be in a Ferox for a loooong time and I love taking advantage of the (extremely good) bonuses the Ferox gets with shield resistance and hybrid turret range, while still using heavy missiles to save cap and hit smaller targets.

You can't go wrong with what you're doing. Plus, with any luck the tier-3 Caldari battleship will be a railboat, and you'll be glad to have turret skills :)

ive focused alot on missles but now im thinking of putting more into my rails so i can make effective use of a Moa as it will be better for up close and personal missions then the Caracal is honestly.

meh, as was said earlier, some of us *HAVE* to train for various weapon platforms. There might not be many Matari specialists out there, but we're the ones who suffer from all this specialising
still, it only takes a few years

Hehe. Matari should be made to suffer!
Ahem. To the OP. You are not wasting your time at all. Gunnery skills for the most part are more important across the board but the missile skills are nice to have too.

Training up projectiles and missles doesn't really pay off until you try to pilot a minmatar dread...which requires an insane amount of skillpoints in gunnery, missles and spaceship command to fly properly.
Other than that, you'll probably just want to train gunnery and light missles, or just missles.

<--- Am a Caldari and Gallente specialist.
6.5 mills gunnery, 5.4 mill missiles.
This is an especially huge comfort when you want to be able to do different stuff...or one ship/race becomes overpowered or nerfed to hell (which will happen every once in a while in all MMOs, I believe). ------------------------------------------- Sometimes, I wake up but keep on dreaming. |
