Hello everyone. I just finished my 14 day trial and decided to sign up
I have really enjoyed the freedom and endless possibilities in EVE. One thing I have read and that scares me a little is that everyone says playing solo is a total deadend.
I have very limited time and don't feel comfortable trying to serve in a corporation or whatever they are called. I really can't be on at certain times to help out, etc etc.
Anyone have any suggestions or thoughts?

Don't worry. I play 90% of my time solo and I don't socialize much either. But having a group for when you need help and some others can can rely on you is also great.
My take is that you shouldn't stress much to the fact that you spend your time playing alone. You might even find some people (or a corp) that suits you (and you suit them) even with your uneven playtime. Try to settle somewhere for a while and talk with the locals. You might help them while online and making contacts is a must.
Relax and enjoy the trip. Just don't go unprepared to low-sec (always a good advice) and keep a monetary backup, as you don't have anybody else at hand to lend you some ISK.

Not having much time to play does not mean you have to solo.
And having tons of time to play doesn't mean you can't play solo.
Playing solo works just fine. You just need to set yourself a goal and play towards it. -- Proud member of the [23].

Cool. I have so much more stuff to explore and get used to so am defintely not worried about the first little while. I have platinum insurance on my ship, if I get wasted, will get the full ship back and have to REPURCHASE insurance?
As of right now, I am just really upgrading my little Atron for speed and firepower. I have some nice hybrid turrets on there but don't really know where to go from there..

No, you will get the insurance payout, nothing more. And yes you will have to buy more insurance.

Try for a Tristan or Incursus. They're quite a bit better. -- Proud member of the [23].

Cool, Tristan or Incursus. I'll do some research.
What is a good build for Rat hunting with one of those ships? Missiles? Railguns? Hybrid?
I have only used hybrid with anti matter ammo up til now...

Hybrids are pretty standard fare for all Gallente ships. 125mm and 150mm hybrids at various ranges are what you'll use. Some ships are also very good with blasters, though generally blasters require more player skill to use, and are more PvP oriented. -- Proud member of the [23].

Sounds good. How about Incursus vs Tristan for multipurpose use (Speed, cargo, combat) ?
Really debating whether to get the Incursus now or wait a bit for the Tristan...

Well the Incursus has one more turret slot...
I'd go with the Incursus. It just looks a billion times cooler. The Tristan looks like a Gundam. -- Proud member of the [23].

Right on
I better try to get my Incursus tonight. Muhahahaha!
Is there a better organzied item database on a fan site or somewhere? Like I went to the main database here and browsing weapons is painful. I hate clicking on each one when I have no idea how it fares against others...

Most people play solo some just join corporations just for the sake of joining one. Dont think because you dont it will have a negative effect on you. Although if you do see anyone regularly in local or find someone mining in the same belt as you it wouldn't hurt to say hi we wont bite.

Yeah Gabby, I guess I still have WoW on my mind where guilds are just entirely different beasts and most require some sort of participation requirements!

A fully complete item database is here, note it includes many items active in game. -- Proud member of the [23].

A good corp for going solo is the Freelancer Corp, help and involvement when you want it, but won't bug you if you don't !!!

Nice plug. This isn't the recruitment forums.
There must be thousands of freelancing corps in EVE which let you do what you want . I'd suggest a newbie join EVE University or the like. -- Proud member of the [23].

In terms of ship, I would suggest a tristan, two turret and two launcher hardpoints, can't go wrong against npc's in that. The way the mineral market is these days, I would hold off on mining or hauling until you join a corp or find a trusted player with a hauler and hire them out. the isk is just not worth the time when you can go out and blast npc's in belts and poi's.
Be upfront about your playing time and desire to remain largely solo when looking for a corp. Any corp that says no to that is not worth your time. Once you are in a corp, remember, you get as much as you put into it. If you do not talk to anyone for weeks then ask for a hauler, people may laugh:) Good luck. -----------------------------------------------

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I must say that the EVE population is extremely helpful and courteous.
I will look into a new corp when I get a little more used to the game.
One question though, can I even PVP with a Tristan and playing solo? If so, where do I need to go to hack some people up?

You probably don't have enough experience at this point in the game to be very effective solo. You'd only be useful in a group (as a tackler), and only if you could follow orders. -- Proud member of the [23].

Originally by: Inti Raymi EDIT: Also, what class of ship is the next upgrade ship wise for Gallente from a Tristan? (I mainly hunt NPC rats)
Catalyst. They rip through rats quite well and will hold you over while you build up the skills/ISKs for cruisers. ----------------------------------------------- Just another refugee from SW:G |
