So, I want to be mining hardcore. I am not that far away from a Rorqual, and have pretty decent combat skills, refining, and mining skills. What is the best way to go about doing this?
The options I see are as follows, any opinions about them are welcome.
1. PoS upgraded for refining, Rorqual, freighter, wormhole. A. Has decent defense capabilities, ability to transport massive amounts of mining yield through wormholes into high sec when that wormhole comes along. Will need 4-8 people to be effective, however, 2 or 3 for defense, the rest for operating mining. Considering creating alts for mining, and just hire people to do the defense work. This also has the risk of them betraying me and killing my assets.
2. Join a corp A. I don't like this idea. Corporations are often stupid, and ineffective. Not to mention I am not really a follower. Also have to deal with wardecs, other people, politics, drama, that sort of ****.
3. Keep on high sec mining. A. Not really profitable. I have grinded out about 2 billion dollars in the last couple of months. Enough to start up something to make even more money, in my opinion.
My question, IF I do decide to wormhole mine, do wormholes have Ice? I am really interested in mining either Ice or really high dollar ores. And, how secure are PoS? I don't have real experience with them. And, how much do mercenaries cost that would be able to secure the wormholes in\out of WH space?
Another option would be to make an alliance with another corporation, and keep it, and mine in their territory and give them a cut. I guess this isn't a bad way to go, if I could trust them.
What do you guys think? |

wormholes do not have ice
the fuel for your tower will be your biggest bottleneck in long term sustainment of wormhole operations
one additional factor to add in is PI resources .. can make a lot of isk from PI in wormhole space...hell of a lot
I lived in a wormhole for awhile with some friends, while it was profitable, and we operated multiple towers, we did mining and cleared sleeper sites, the availability of the various belts was random... we would some times go 2 weeks with out seeing a roid belt, but did see several gas pockets which took almost no time at all to mine up...
we even had some production capability in WH space as well..
we would haul goods out when ever a wh opened into high sec empire space near a major trade hub, then purchase fuel and haul it back
always trying to stay ahead of the fuel requirements was a challenge, ... fuel blocks have made It significantly easier, but you will still need a lot
question is... can you make enough isk to keep your tower fully fueled the majority of the time,

I believe I can make enough ISK to keep it fueled. I will just have a huge cargo container besides the station with enough reserve fuel for a long time, in case a WH doesn't open up into high sec. I can keep ships inside the PoS shield, like a freighter, and other ships that I would need. |

POS refineries max out at 75% efficiency (except for ice), hence you'll be throwing away 25% of your ore. Most WHs don't have the mass to allow a freighter through, the ones that do are the high end WHs and you'd be evicted pretty fast. A Rorqual KM alone would encourage that.

There are lots of good ways to make isk in wormhole space, but mining is not one of them. POS refineries truly suck, and losing 25% to the poor efficiency is only part of it... they convert ore really slowly, and you will probably need several to support a multiplayer mining corp, which means multiple POS's, which means more fuel cost. Then you have the horrid risk of PvP... gankers can warp in with no warning whatsoever, they don't show up in local. Before Odyssey, gankers had to scan down the grav sites, and miners could get some warning by spamming d-scan and looking for probes. Now the grav sites require no scanning, and miners get no warning at all.
You want to live in a wormhole? Make isk through PI, running reactions, killing and salvaging sleepers, collecting gas, maybe a bit of PvP loot. But mining? You have to be a serious masochist. |

Some things have been mentioned in this thread. Atm, wormholes are not your best solution. Remove insurance. |

The problem with mining in wspace is that the grav site spawns are not regular enough to keep you busy. It's a profitable hobby to do when things are slow. I've seen people make a good living mining their static holes to LS, NS, and wspace. Former forum cheerleader CCP, now just a hopeful small portion of the community. |

Other people are going to be the biggest problem in this scenario, yes. I was hoping to hire a big corp to help me, and work as mercenaries, covering all the current WH in system. |

Not really profitable you say?
If you've mined an equalivent of 2 billion dollars in highsec then you really meant it when you said you're a hardcore miner.
I mean.. 2 billion dollars worth of isk is about 125.000.000 plexes and each plex is about 550 million isk.
That would mean you've aquired about 68.750.000.000.000.000 isk mining in highsec Thats almost 69 quadrillion isk!
Stay where you are mate! Keep mining whatever you're mining! My interests include but are not limited to throwing rocks at bee hives.

Join a null indy corp or start your own indy corp and rent.
Depends on the corps prices for ore but if it's even close to jita that saves you all the logistic work/time leaving you free to mine.
If you want to start your own corp hire some miner friends than ask the big baddie alliances how much a system or two would be a month.
*oh and don't bring that roqural if you join a corp until you've gotten to know them. |

Cheapest systems in drone regions are around 750 mil per month, and you can mine like crazy mofo 24/7 in them for max profit.
BUT ... you need own rorq, own JF to move items (or you can use some hauling services of alliance, but one trip of JF cost usually around 150 mil, so it can get expensive) etc.
But if you have own rorq and JF, go for it and rent your own system. If you plan to mine a lot with multiple account, this is the best option for you.
If you don't want any of these troubles, join some renting mining corp and mine. I know one which charge 12% from Jita price on the minerals, which is decent price for the support you get. |
