It is if you plan on playing (and learning) for another 3 years (i think) |

Get the advanced learning skills to 4.
If you want advanced at 5, then you need to train something like 20+mil SP's on the appropriate categorys for each skill that you get to 5 to break even.
So far, few people have broke even yet, if any. --- Slot 10 Akemons Modified 'Noble'Zet 5000 implant +8% Armour FREE |

Eventually.
Seriously, there is no real need to focus on these as a priority in the early stages of play. When you get your basic learning skills to the point where they take 7+ hours to train, set them to train while you're asleep or at work and concentrate on training "fun" skills that allow you to pilot ships and use items while you're playing.
Don't focus on training all the learning skills before you do anything else as you will severely hinder your fun and also lack the capacity to earn the money needed to buy the advanced learning skills.

When I first started playing EVE, I was really into the suikoden series for Playstation 1/2. What I did was set up my learning skills while I played suikoden. It took me a few months to finish the games because my play time was limited due to work and school. By the time I was done, I had all advanced learning to IV and then some. Not really an option for all players, but something you can think about doing to kill some time. Other problem though was first earning the isk to buy the skills, but that is not terribly difficult.

Lots of people have not only broken even but saved weeks of training time perhaps even over 1 month. You need to add up all the time saved learning skills that came out after you got adv5. ItÆs not like you could train those skills before you got adv5 so if you learn lots of new skills you could have saved a lot of training time by having adv5.
You can have 5 million skillpoints in a category and save time. Its not always 20 million. Unless your a real new pilot then its 20million unless CCP bring out more skills.
As you can bet CCP will bring out new skills then if your a new pilot and interested in the new professions they have planed adv5 could well be worth it. _________________________________________________ Nominate famous people in Eve who had an impact on you. |

I have spend the past month really focusing on the first set of learning skills. I got them all to level 5 and the advanced to level 3. Its a huge help to do the learning skills. I wouldn't take the advanced to level 5 because thats a lot of time that you could be training other things. But I will advise you to get through the first 5 learning skills and take the advanced to at least lvl 3. For me once I got the advanced skills it only took about 15 hours total for each to get it to level 3. So esentially you are getting 3 attribute points for 15 hours training time and thats a good deal. When I first started training this month Frigate lvl 5 was going to take me 30 days and now its only going to take me 11 days 10 hours. Thats just one skill that I was really paying attention to. So it saved me 18 days and 14 hours on just that one skill you can imagine what it saved me accross the board by doing the learning. In my opinion train at the minimum the first 5 training skills to level 5 it will save you months of training time at the minimum!!!

I agree with Pottsey. Of course, I also agree with the plan to train gaming skills first...so you can survive and make isky's and buy kool toys to try out.
Now: I have been playing almost 2 years, so all the "gaming" skills are trained.
Sooooo.....like Pottsey says: not for the older pilots. I have 11 Learning Skills all trained to level 5. Thus, when I putz around with the "NEW" skills patched in, the training time is quite quick.
It's all in the plan you lay out.

I decided to start training adv learnings once I realized it would take me around a month just to get myself into an interceptor. I figure if I'm going to spend that much time jsut to fly one ship, why not just go for it.
There is a certain order that cuts the time down on training learning skills. Start by alternating between instant recall, analytical mind, and learning, up to lvl 4 for all. Then take instant recall to 5, and eidetic memory up to 4. Then go back to analytic mind to 5, and take logic to lvl 4, then learning to lvl5. I decided to after 2 1/2 weeks to start training adv learnings to lvl 4 for all, maybe lvl 5 for perception and intelligence. Don't forget that getting implants will speed up the process as well.
Before I decided to train, I made sure I had at least lvl 2 in cruisers and the ability to equip some decent mods and weps. This way, I can sill run lvl 2 missions solo and earn some decent money when I'm on. If I get bored while training learning, I just find something else to do with my sparetime. I pulled out some old Heinlein books of mine that I haven't read in years. You grok it?

People debating this topic often confuse mathematical breakeven with the more abstract 'payoff'. Mathematical breakeven is the point at which a character who has trained the advanced learning(s) to V 'catches up' in non-learning SP to a player who left it(them) at IV. Breakeven for all V skills has been calculated at 1330 days, or about 3.65 years, or the afforementioned 20M SP per advanced skill.
"Payoff" is a much more fluid term, and can be whatever you want it to be. I gain satisfaction from a maxed learning skill tree and the knowledge that I have done all I can to maximise training speed. Thus for me, advanced learning V "Payed off" immediately, even though I know I am three years from breakeven.
That said, it will take you a couple of months to train all 5 skills to V from IV, so if you plan to do so, train some more immediately useful skills first. I would recommend being able to fly assault frigates and/or interceptors as then you can have some fun while waiting. -- Originally by: Nyphur The irony is astounding.
