Can someone explain how this works exactly? For example, an ECM module might have attributes of LADAR 2, RADAR 6, etc. What do these numbers mean? Does ECM affect hit probability, range, or what? Also, how does ECM effectiveness compare to alternative defensive mid-slot modules?

Each ship's stats (on the attributes tab) have the strength of their sensors listed (LADAR and RADAR are just types for specific ships). Each race has a dominant sensor type.
So, if someone is fitting ECM, targets you, and activates enough modules to account for jamming higher than the amount of sensor strength you have (For example, ECM Multispectral Jammers jam 4 points in each type of sensor) you will lose lock and not be able to target anything. So, unless you have drones already attacking the target you are essentially a dead fish (time to warp out).
Hope that helps a bit. ---------------------------------------------- Persona non grata |

Excellent. So, potentially ECM could provide 100% defense against, say, certain NPC ships? A very good use of a slot, in that case.

Well, there is a certain amount of luck involved with it now (used to be definite) and generally that will require at least two mods to put two targets under. It also uses a lot of cap.
Tanking is more cap efficient than ECM for trying to survive encounters. ECM is more for PvP. ---------------------------------------------- Persona non grata |

So, a single ECM module protects me from only one opponent? Or from all opponents? (I see the cap requirements are steep...but if it killed a bunch of locks it would be worth it.)

Just one.
Chance to jam = jammer strength / sensor strength -- Proud member of the [23].

What about the ECM burst module? Is it luck based too? And does it only work on ships inside the pitiful 5km range?

Its broken atm. Even if it wasn't, it would be pretty useless. -- Proud member of the [23].
