Edited by: Saeris Tal''Urduar on 17/01/2006 18:50:39 The diesel engine was designed to run off peanut oil (and did), back in 1898, almost 110 years ago.
I think the only reason the engine was converted to run off of petroleum based fuel, was because extracting peanut oil was more expensive than making diesel fuel from crude oil. (how times have changed)

Diesel is a waste product of petrol (Gas for the americans among us) production, whilst looking for a use for this "waste" product the "Diesel" engine was found to run on this waste and thereby the Diesel engine was born as a Low power / High Torque engine suitable for pulling heavy loads, hence it's first uses in heavy goods vehicles.
Edit:- mind you petrol is fast becoming the waste product now, as diesel engines become better
And on another Diesel related fact - A Diesel engine, once started, will run without any form of electrical supply.

The creosote bush, which grows in the Mojave, Sonoran, and Chihuahuan deserts, has been shown by radiocarbon dating to have lived since the birth of Christ. Some of these plants may endure 10,000 years, scientists say. If only they could talk.

Disturbing fact: A jury of her peers awarded Kathleen Robertson of Austin, Texas, $780,000 after breaking her ankle by tripping over a toddler who was running inside a furniture store. The owners of the store were understandably surprised at the verdict, considering the misbehaving little toddler was Ms. Robertson's son.
