Edited by: Sorcha Fable on 23/08/2003 02:15:43 I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas or workarounds for this problem? Every time I log in, EVE runs smoothly for a few minutes and then begins to lockup. It will occasionally unlock but only for moments and so the game is unplayable. I have to alt-tab out and then cntrl/alt/del to exit EVE (occasionally this causes a crash and I have to do a hard reboot). I'm using 1gig Celeron Processor, 510 ram, Nvidia GF2, Linxus router, latest drivers. Cable modem, win 98. I have absolutely no problems with other internet functions, including other online games. No sign of the current worm on my system, which I was told could cause these sorts of symptoms. OK so I'm not getting CTDs but somehow those would almost be easier, at least I could log straight back in again! Any ideas or info. would be greatly appreciated, I'm new to EVE (2 days) and would seriously like to be able to play the game.

I have read more of the forums and have rolled back my Nividia drivers to the last ones supported by Win 98, updated soundcard drivers, cleared my cache (suggested by a GM). I don't have the very latest Windows update either (which seems to be causing some problems). Now EVE begins to lock up as soon as I log in. Can anyone help me please?

you can keep swapping your drivers, might get lucky. i would upgrade to windows 2000 or XP if you can. win98 is unstable at best and very inefficient with ram & virtual memory. with time the effect is magnified. back when i used win98 i would format and reinstall win98 every 6 months to improve performance.
how much video memory do you have? try turning off some of the graphics features and reducing your screen resolution.
could be your video card but i would exhaust the free possibilities first borrow a card from somebody and test it out.

Thanks for your ideas Jame. My hubby keeps nagging me to update to Windows XP so I will probably do that at some point. I am not sure how much graphics memory I have, probably not enough, although I'm pretty sure its at least the 64 meg required! I have done everything suggested in emails from GMs with no lasting solution. I'm using the Nvidia drivers specified, I cleared the Eve cache, turned off unneeded graphics effects etc.. etc.. None of this has worked. The last email was to tell me that due to the load on customer services they couldn't reply and help me right away. So it seems that I'm getting more help from the forums and experienced players that from the people who made this game. Surely there is something quite wrong here?? I'm about to put Eve on the shelf for a couple of months, cancel my account and come back to it when it is possible that a) the game is far far less buggy and b) customer service has time to provide customer service I guess b) follows from a)

Hello Sorcha Fable,
May I suggest you run dxdiag.exe on your computer? That is a tool that tests your directx for problems. Run that test and look for reported errors.

Edited by: Sorcha Fable on 25/08/2003 14:55:42 Jehova I have sent in a dxdiag report with each and every email. There are no errors reported. I am not sure that GMs even look at attached dxdiags.

Yeah I've read your posts Hung Solo, it looks like we are having similar problems. But you have lost alot more than me. I have no intention of buying expensive ships or doing anything other than mining until I can play the game properly. Trouble is, I'm getting bored fast!! Hope you get some help with getting your moa back.

A quick update. For some unknown reason I have had absolutely no problems playing eve today for several hours at a stretch. I haven't changed anything on my computer, so I am guessing that something has changed server side. Has anyone else noticed an improvement today?

Im having same problems.... the game plays fine for an hour or so then for some reason locks and I have to quit via Windows. I've been playing Eve since Launch and this problem only started since the last big patch. I also noticed that being a new player, and going to the 'People and Places' icon and selecting 'Corp Members' it also freezes. I have recently noticed that this window also appears a few secs before the game randomly locks.... I think it's a memory leak and CCP nned to fix it quick. |
