Ok i have only been playing eve for a few hours and and still getting used to all the rules and skills -but what do most people do when playing Eve
do you hunt? do you mine? other things?
The reason im asking is ive been flying around for a few hours and have not seen anyone. and it seems a bit point and click the auto pilot and wait.. Im sure im must be missing out on things ..

The best thing to do when you first start up is to mine until you can afford a frigate. when you get one of those you can start to hunt or mine on a more serious level.

You can mine asteroids - useful for money. You can take on agent missions, useful for a bit of money and some traveling. You could just explore the universe. You could trade You could hunt NPC pirates You could hunt PC pirates (a bit more risky perhaps).
Use your starting corporations chat channel - on ours, we discuss everything - from where not to go, what ships to buy, quotes from Monty Python films, what sort of cars we all want, areas we live in etc.
The local channel is ok - often pick up tips of where to hunt or mine, though in some systems there can be player pirates out to get you.
Mining seems to be the major moneymaker at first, then perhaps fighting when you've got a better ship (and better weapons). Don't forget to train your skills - they also train while offline, so advisable to train something taking a few hours or days when you know you aren't going to be around when skill finishes training.

At the beginning, you have to mine. Mine ALOT. Its boring first, but its the more lucrative thing to do. Agent missions are less boring, but they dont pay very well, if you consider all the traveling you have to do.
For me, its my third week. Still mining. But its more interesting. Instead of mining in a cheap frigate, im now mining in a cruiser, carrying stock with industrial ship. I have my own corp. So I mine with a friend. He mine, I carry.
For now, it doesnt seem very fun, but it is: cause we have a lot of cool project, but we need cash first. We need lot of cash and better ship.
But when we will have the ship we need (very soon), well start to make some trade, find good trade route, travel a lot. My friend will pilot the industrial ship while I will be the escort cruiser.
We also have some plans to start manufacturing stuff. But its not for now.
Hope it give you some ideas.

Screw the mining. Buy a civ shield booster and kill arrogators. Ask anyone nearby where the nearest pirate scout base is and have fun :) ____________________________________ Taggart wants YOU. Join TTi! *waves his hand in your face in the jedi way* |

Edited by: Luther Pendragon on 24/08/2003 11:37:25 I found it more lucrative to hunt npcs. Could depend on your char, if you invest in gunnery or mining.
No, you cant destroy 'em, least I couldnt. ____________________________________ Taggart wants YOU. Join TTi! *waves his hand in your face in the jedi way* |

Mining is great for beginning character though, I find the first few agent missions and a couple of the first missions from your level 1 referral can give a good amount of time to explore EVE's functions and interfaces. Also, the first 16 or so missions net you about 200,000isk. This amount should be more than enough to outfit a new ship and buy the necessary equipment for mining or hunting (or both!)
Hope that helps.

Despite popular belief it is possible to get started without ever touching a mining laser. The small amount of starting isk can be used for small time trading or agent missions. Both of these can get you a ship & equipment upgrade in short order.
Mining maybe an easy way of starting, but it is by no means the only way.

I would suggest doing the noob agent missions and about another 10-20 in the first few days. Learn your learning skills, and maybe do the odd stint mining or npc pirate hunting.
The agent missions which some people consider boring, are a great way to learn the game, make some isk and have fun. The thing i like about agent missions right at the begining is it gives you structure in what is otherwise an almost too open game, the sheer size of and freedom of choice in Eve can be daunting to a new player. 2-3 days of missions and poking around should be enough to show you most elements of the game.
By mission 10-20 you should have couriered goods, mined ore, refined items, killed the odd pirate, docked, warped, auto-piloted, played with the map and People&Places menu, looked at the wallet, the market, fitted the odd item on the ship and chatted a bit in local or corp chats. Armed with this info you should be able to plan your next phase, knowing what tasks you can do and more importantly maybe knowig what it is you want to to in the world of Eve to have fun. -
