I get mails like that from RIFT (never played it), SWTOR ( never played it) etc. all the time, most go to fake sites that just want you to log in and give them your info. If it's an actual real deal for returning players, who cares? What does dual training cost CCP? It's a 1 instead of a 0 in a field in your info.
With the increase in shiptoasting, the Report timer needs to be shortened.

Perhaps the OP should keep her tinfoil conjecture confined within the WIS thread where she hatched it, instead of creating another thread for attention whoring. But seriously, marketing deals like this are common in subscription businesses: magazines, web sites, services. Getting people to sign up the first time is the hardest part, that's why you see these kind of deals.

Not an EVE is dying but an EVE is Cleverly Thriving... finding ways to walk the road -- Making those that want to Pay happy.. (charging them) and those that would play if free more offers closer to free.
Trend continues --
There is a further move to free to play...
... not easy for you nuts who are black or white people.. but 5$ a month is closer to free than 10$ a month.
More free trials, more buddy programs, more power of two.. on top those special offers.
.. if more people play more of their time without even a plex, that moves the game closer towards free to play.. it is free to play for more people for longer periods and game time bonuses.
It is really hard for most of you to grasp, but attracting new non playing players often leads to more $ . Gamers have friends. Gamers mention EVE while playing other games....
... and here is the part many don't want to hear, as they're sure that by giving CCP the Plex ticket for game time that someone else bought for them with $/Euro that they are actually paying CCP $ when they turn it in.
No.. the other guy paid them.. you did the guy a favor by giving him isk so he'd pay for your game time... with CCP's blessing.
Those guys buying the tickets come with some proportion with the guys that want to play for free. 5 friends play for free.. one of the 5 will probably get a wild hair up his butt, and spend a gift or a bonus etc to sell 10 plex to buy a carrier and some other goodies... or sell 30 plex to buy a character.
To get the guy lose with his wallet it makes sense to give game time away... get as many people hooked and interested and some will pay extra.
I'd bet you that 10% of the players generate 70% of the cash revenue for CCP.
Sure, every character consumes a ticket that someone paid for.... but that's not the point .. there wlll always be someone to give a guy isk at some rate or another to add another acount ... Someone.. not you, not most people.... some people.
The real question is how to get more people likely to go on a binge, and the way is to get more people playing who gain enough interest in the game to think it is a good idea.
Side note :
For those of you that think of your game assets having a real $ because they have a black-market $ value:
If the price of plex were lowered straight out from 15 $ to 7.50 .. that character of yours you might think was worth $500 would then be worth $250 within a few months..... character values have a vary close correlation to plex prices.
.... bawhhahahaha! .. its CCP's money. not ours .. so I'm kind of happy to have my few hundred billion lose real $ value (black market)
.. lower RMT value creates less temptation to do what I know is wrong .....if its only a few hundred I don't need to wonder if it would be better to get $1000 to send my kid to camp by skirting some rules. |

Power of 2 alts have had up to 90 days for a 1 month sub, and that 1 month sub has been payable with a plex bought with isk. ie its nothing new. My power of 2 alt dates from 2009.

As some are blinded by my WiS activism, let's state the point of this thread clearly.
The current EVE marketing trends, which have been in place since 2012, are lowering the price of EVE. "Get the same, pay less" and its close sibling "pay the same, get more" are strategies bound to attract customers whose target price is below the current sell price -that is, people who don't think that your product is worth the price you ask for it.
Obviously, this kind of customers are not deemed worthy as long as you have enough cash flow from customers who buy your product at the set price. You dont's start grabbing 15 euros for 2 accoutns if you still can grab them for 1, period.
Now, let's remember that EVE is a cash cow. It produces a steady income with known threats and rewards. But also cash cows have their own threats -one ft hem, it's diminishing consume. If less people buy the cash cow, your corporate income suffers. And, what do you do next? Expand the consumer base. When you're sellinh a single product, the way to do that is to reach for people who still don't buy the product. Of those potential consumers, the easier target are the ones who don't buy it because of the price.
So CCP is lowering the price of its cash cow in order to keep a growing consumer base. That's good... but it's not what you do when you're growing and succeeding. It's what you do when you're on the verge of stagnation, because all in all you are selling more for the same or even less income.
It also is a cheap trick, compared to the real deal -develop different products (EVE cherry, EVE light, EVE flavored water...) that appeal to different consumer bases, and, God forbid it!, expand the consumer base for your main product (that is, make it appeal to a wider base).
CCP hasn't succeeded much in expanding the consumer base through different products (WoD is on development, Valkyrie is just a let's see and DUST is not paying not even its operation costs) and also have been notoriously passive in drawing the attention of new players, after devoting two years to just retain existing customers and call back former customers.
IMO, CCP is under heavy financial stress (probably they've got to repay a loan in october and their cash flow is not AAA exactly), a situation where the 20 million USD flop of DUST hasn't helped much, and in terms of EVE, the upcoming winter expansion and the Hallelujah Plan behind it are CCP's last chance to break the cycle of stagnation that started after the Incarnageddon. EVE is not taller now than in 2011; she's just wearing a higher hat, made of returning players, re-sold alt accounts and a increased retention of new players (which has improved from awful to bad).
"More of the same" is not going to take them much further; at the current pace, probably by 2015 they will have exhausted the "lowering price" road and will be facing F2P unless the Hallelujah Plan succeeds in expanding the player base for the first time since Apochrypha. That emans more and enw content; FiS, obviously, provided how WiS has been backburned forever. And it truns that CCP has been neglecting literal hordes of players in terms of FiS. Will they dare to tap on the misfit players?
In one hand i trust CCP Seagull and hope that the Hallelujah Plan can deliver and draw new blood before the cold winter of stagnation and decay befalls on EVE; but also I've been disappointed by CCP's unability to "get it" enough times as to think that no amount of creative talent can overcome a shy, tired or scared management, nor a cognitively blinded "voice of the players".
The stakes are very high, and I am truly worried. I've made a massive investment in this game, and i don't like what I've been seeing for the last years as it is just getting worse and worse. tl;dr
CCP is cheapening EVE subscriptions because otherwise subscriptions would be going down. But subscriptions will go down anyway unless CCP starts drawing in different players with their new 3 year development plan. CCP has shown enough lack of competence in the past as to fear about their ability to do it right now when they need to.
I am worried about that. The Greater Fool Bar is now open for business, 24/7. Come and have drinks and fun somewhere between RL and New Eden! |
