I have been sharing an account with my young son, I use one character, he uses the other. I know we can only train skills on one account at a time but is there any way of both of us getting online using the different characters at the same time?
It would be a bit expensive to have to pay for a second account is there a cheaper alternative?
Also, I help him out with isks(just like RL ) but it would be really useful if we could transfer other stuff in a similar way to a corp hanger. Do we need to form a corp to do this?

At the present time, although it might seem a bit expensive, two (2) individual accounts would be your best option. This would allow you both to be online at the same time and train both characters.
In regards to sharing items and money, setting up a corporation is the way to go. Once you have a corporation, you can use corporate hangers for items and the corporation wallet for money.

I think I read somewhere that it's possible to run two accounts a the same time on one computer using a duel monitor set-up. So when your son isn't playing, you can still control another extra character at the same time helping your main one. A good use maybe for moving large secure containers to stations while the other character is mining at the same time.
Though, I would think it would be cool for you and your son to be online at the same time and worked togethor on something, like going into a more dangerous area to mine and one of you keeps an eye for pirates.

I solved the sharing stuff problem with a secure container floating in space. I guess it's still possible for someone to scoop the whole container?
The dual screen setup sounds interesting. Damn the lack of a search tool on this site.
Thanks for the tips so far.

For info I run 2 accounts on one PC but with 2 screens. One is for combat and security plus hauling, other is for mining & refining. Works a treat. Simple to do as well: 1. Install 1st CD licenced version to default location 2.Install 2nd CD licenced version to non-default location 3.Download all patches manually and and copy to root of each Eve folder - run patches New eve.exe shortcut from lic 1 location on desktop, named eve1, 2nd eve.exe shortcut from lic 2 location to desktop, named eve 2. 4. Run both windowed, 1 on each monitor. Quality will depend on graphics card but I run Geforce 5200, turned down some graphics and its fine, across dial-up connection as well! This is great for heavy mining as you can mine and haul, even when rest of corp is off-line.
Works for me, but wont try it in combat, bit to much going on then!

Edited by: Jojin on 24/08/2003 14:45:26 I have up to three (3) copies running at the same time on a single computer. Each version of the program is in a different directory (Eve1, Eve2, EveDev). They will all run at the same time in windowed mode.
Also, in regards to patching. The two (2) I use with the Tranquility server automatically patch, with the built in patcher application. They do require a double download during the auto patching, but all patch is applied to the directory which the application resides.
The patching for the Chaos server is still a manual patch.

I also run 3 accounts at the same time on the same PC. You don't need to intall the game to 3 different directories either, I only have one installation of EVE on my PC. I have no problems playing all 3 characters at the same time - just play in windowed mode and ALT TAB between 'em. Lag is minimal too when all 3 are online.

Edited by: Loon on 25/08/2003 12:08:40 Thanks for this.
I just got the Boss' permission to buy a second PC for the house .
I did'nt know it was possible to run more than one character from seperate instances of the client at the same time. This is very good news, if it works on the same PC, it should work a treat on two PCs. Meanwhile, I'll set up in a new directory on to try things out.
What's not so good is that I got a phone call at work from my son (aged 6) today to say he had changed his mind about saving for an industrial and had decided to buy me some presents instead. He's blown our whole stash.
He had earned 120,000 isk himself through mining in sec 1.0 space (he doesn't like all you baddies out there in low sec space). He has been really savvy about not selling minerals below value and does better than many people I see out there .
To get him a bit closer to his goal, I gave him 180,000 isk. Now he's gone and blown 300,000 isk on stuff neither of us can actually fit to our frigates
Ah well, a round the region trip in store tonight to pick up all my "presents".

I can't log in the second time. I get a message from the first running programme saying that the connection has been usurped and it closes to the login screen. What gives?

Busted,
First, I assume you are attempting to run multiple paid accounts and not access a single account multiple times. The latter is not an option; logging in twice under a single account is not allowed.
Though it may be possible to play from a single directory, I would defiantly use different directories. Temporary cache files and preference files should be isolated to each individual instance of the game. Also make sure the shortcuts to the individual installations also have the ęstart inĘ field defined to the location associated directory.

Edited by: Darkstarr on 25/08/2003 20:53:59 You must make sure you play each account in windowed mode... I've always had problems (crashing etc) if one account was left in full screen mode.

Edited by: Loon on 26/08/2003 00:43:42 To be clear:
An account is something paid for in real money on a monthly basis and has a login ID and password.
A character is something ingame where you get three to play with included in your "account".
What I would like to do is get two "characters" within the same "account" online at the same time, either using multiple screens, two PCs or whatever. Is this possible?
If I need mutiple "accounts", do I need to buy a new CD/CD key? Why can I not just sign-up for another monthly fee to get a second account?
BTW, Busted is the 6 year old version of Loon.

Playing multiple Characters at the same time is not possible because the server will only allow a single connection per paid account.
If you attempted to connect to EVE a second time using a single account, it will shut down as it is registering the account is already connected and running.

I have two accounts, I have a router and two computers set up next to each other. Makes mining and hauling much more efficient. Plus having 6 characters to choose from allows you to switch around and try different races and ships.

Plus you can coordinate attacks so much quicker. Kutka |

For the people running two accounts; do you have to buy a new CD or can you use the same CD key but register another account using it?
Any help would be most apreciated

You will have to purchase an additional CD. This is not too bad right now as the price of a new copy of the game is very close to one months subscription rate.
