Has anyone else had their computer hacked into by anothe player while they were playing Eve?
Mine was and the hacker told me this while we were in convo chat. He said he did it and got my IP address through Eve's connection.
How do I know he wasn't bs'ing me? How else could he tell me certain things about the files on my computer unless he was either at my computer or had hacked into my computer?
I have contacted Eve support and of course they cannot find any evidence of this having happened at all and of course he denies everything duh.
They say it's impossible for any hacker to get into their system and I've tried telling them otherwise but oh well...
I enjoy playing Eve but not when someone else can hack into my computer through the game connection and open the door for others as well which is what happened. The end result was my xp system directory was remotely deleted and I ended up reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling windows.
Has anyone else been a victim of hackers while playing Eve? If so post here as well as contact support.

maybe your computer just sucks ass and you have really bad security on your network. shouldn't blame eve for poor computer upkeep.

use norton internet security myself. Comes with a build in firewall. It gives nice messages like person x tried to hack into your system but was stopped

if you are on broad band or on a home network i suggest going and getting a lyncsis router(i hope i spelled that right) it comes with a built in fire wall which is hardware ran not software so it is impossible to hack, but on the flip side you wont be able to get files through instant messagers like icq or msn. you will just be able to message back and forth.
they cost around 80 bucks in the U.S. i dont know about anywhere else.

Like water, hackers will travel the path of least resistance. (of course unless it is for fame ie. DOD server) So like everyone else has said.. Firewall and virus protection help increase the resistance to any incoming attack and increase the chances that the hacker will move to the next easy target...
Also understand that most hackers are not trying to be destructive, they are just very curious and consider the internet as their playground, even if it happens to be in your computer.

I've been using Norton's Internet Security's firewall and it didn't give any alerts of any kind.
When I have some more money I may get that Dlink DI-604 router.
For those of you that say you haven't been hacked I hope you never do but don't be too sure of your security cuz it may not be as good as you think. I've been using NIS since '98 and never had any problem with anyone getting into my system while playing other MMORPGS including UO, MCO, AO, and Neocron or using AIM and ICQ.

Thats just bs on their side imo, the only secure system is a system where the rj-45's(Network cable, TP, also for other stufF) is janked out of the system, the system is locked behind a welded safe 1km under the surface surrounded by concrete, and STILL its not entirely safe as the human factors come into play. :)

I use a combo of a router with build-in firewall and Norton Personall Firewall.
I know, that no system is completely safe, as your post suggest, but better something then nothing, right?

I don't log my chats and even if I had he could have just removed them anyway. Chat logging adds to lag and I got enough lag as it was.
I've been unemployed for the last 2 months and so haven't had the cash to get anything better than an ethernet card I got the other day.
I went to the [url=http://ww.grc.com/default.htm]Shields Up[/url] site and according to it my computer is completely secure. Of course I know better :/

He probably gained access through the RPC DCOM exploit that has recently been doing the rounds, even tho Microsoft issued a security update about this months ago, as usual the home computer users dont check the Microsoft website often enough, and dont use autoupdate :)

This occurred before the Blaster Worm virus was on the internet and before the RPC DCOM vulnerability was known about but that's an interesting thought though. He didn't say how he used the Eve connection so I don't know what service he used. I'm assuming he used the chat service as we were in convo at the time.

I had W98 se since '98 til I upgraded to XP a few months ago and never caught a virus or got hacked by anyone the entire time til I upgraded to XP. I reinstalled W98 se and will never upgrade to XP again.

Thats very silly,
Windows XP is a far superior operating system and offers much in the way of advantages. i agree with the other guys on it probably being one of the XP exploits, which doesnt require much info about your computer at all to pull off.
Try Patching ALL of the critical updates, as many of the windows updates as possible, and make sure the built in firewall is enabled on any connections you have.
I highly doubt it had anything to do with eve.

XP's firewall isn't compatible with NIS firewall and the macker himself told me while we were in convo that he got through to my computer using the Eve connection.
XP has port 137 or 139 I think it is that even if you have it set in your firewall to block it it still remains open as well as other holes.

just my 2c:
1)NIS manual says you should turn off XP firewall if you use NIS
2) you can tell NIS firewall to just accept connections from a specific server eg. the eve-servers at the specified eve ports and block everything else... (you have to do that in the advanced section and not use the "allow program x everything" options)

I'm very new to EVE, so excuse me if I'm being inaccurate, but something doesnt add up. Part of my role at work involves maintaining internet security. The denial from EVE support that he was not hacked through the game isnt so cut and dry from the info posted.
The issue is not what method was used to gain access, but how his IP address was identified in the first place. It doesnt matter which OS or firewall etc is inplace, if the hacker doesnt know the IP address they cant do anything.
There are only 3 ways that I can it could be done.
1) The hacker already had the IP address from another source. There are many ways to get this. For example if they had comminicated using some other software. It is possible to get IP addresses from for example from AIM, ICQ and other chat programs connections. Many forums actually store the IP address of posters to try and reduce spamming, flaming etc. Some even publish the IP address!! (havent checked this one out yet  )
2) Possibly EVE at some level communicates directly to other people's machines for certain features and not via the EVE server(s). It is faily easy find all the IP addresses that your machine connects to and even read the content. Maybe the chat feature of EVE goes direct client to client. Whilst this is just speculation, using peer-to-peer connections would be a viable way of reducing chat lag by not sending it all via central servers.
3) He has actually gained access to EVE servers or routers and obtained the IP address. As mentioned in a post above no system is secure.
If I get time, I might have a go to checkout point 2). Although I have all the tools and some of the experience needed to do it I must point out that I use them for checking security issue at work and not hacking myself . It wont be a thorough or intrusive check though as I dont want to get banned myself hehe.
If I do find anything out, I wont be posting the details on here as it would basiclly be free info for more would be hackers. I will however send it to EVE support. If anyone else doest find out how it was done, please can they also do the same.
The advise that I give to all players is make sure you keep upto date with Microsoft patches, use uptodate Virus checkers and install a firewall (software or hardware or both for the paranoid like me)

Are you kidding me?? Ok, I call shenanigans on this right now. XP is far superior to 98 se... faster, more reliable, more secure. Try checking out www.2000trainers.com and www.theeldergeek.com for information on how to secure your system.

I doubt there will be any sort of official reply to this, other than to say "We're looking into it and will cover any holes we find." Not enough info was given by the person affected, to figure out how this happened. And, if it's true, obviously the hacker isn't talking.
You can get someone's IP address from the Chaos IRC channel. Unlike #eve-online, that one doesn't mask IP Addresses. Also, I'm not sure about the in-game browser's headings, trusted sites may be able to grab your IP addy.
As far as getting access to files via the EVE client, it could be possible. Would have to dig through their source code to figure out how, though. The .py files are readable, and .stuff readers are available...
It definitely is plausible. |

XP may be superior to W98 se with it's control over networking admistration of users and such but it does have holes. Until I see something more to my liking security wise I keep what I got as it's never failed me. se has it's bugs but at least they're not as security holes.
Invict, I'm unable to get into the game currently as the game freezes the desktop just before the login screen :(

You can file share through a linksys router, in fact its quite easy.
To save you the tutorial chat, the best thing to do is phone their technical support and they will take you step by step through each move. I file share over irc, msn, php etc thx to a 10min call. Linksys use a NAT firewall inbuilt to their hardware. while it is extremely difficult to hack, it is not impossble. But there again, everything can be hacked by someone.
